Haha, funny challenge. There’re indeed a lot of dialects in China’s coastal areas.

One of my friends back in Fujian said “on the other side of the hill there could be a totally different language”. True?

Poor presentation, poor factual research and poor audio quality. I am a Gutian speaker whose grandparents migrated to Malaysia more than a century ago. The least i would had expected to be presented, besides the two demonstrated, are other dialects like Fuzhou, MinQing, FuQing and Gutian. All these dialects are Hokkien dialects originating from Fujian Province (or pronounced as 'Hokkien' in the Min dialects). There is a general misconception that Hokkien is a dialect but in actual fact all dialects in Fujian (or Hokkien) are collectively called Hokkien dialects. The individual dialects are named according to the cities or towns where the dialects are spoken. For example the dialect spoken in the capital city of Fujian (Fuzhou) is called Fuzhou. The dialect spoken in the town of FuQing is called FuQing and the dialect spoken in the town of Gutian is called Gutian, and so on. Hope the presenter will take a lead from here and do more research on the dialects in Fujian/Hokkien Province. As most people have already known, Hakka dialect is not originally from Fujian. The Hakka people (客人) migrated from Northern China into southern provinces, notably Fujian and Guandong.

Many thanks for your criticism. We actually have three episodes about this topic but we didn't make it clear in this video. We fully understand it's impossible to cover all the dialects in Fujian so we just planned to try showing something we know better of. I would like to apologize if there's anything you find unprofessional or even offensive in this video and we shall try harder with our experimental productions. BTW I guess what you meant was Gutian hua, Fuzhou hua, Fuqing hua etc., and it's quite convenient to render Minnan hua as “southern Fujian dialect” but Hokkien seems to be better received, according to Wikipedia. Also, by "Dialects in Fujian" we mean some kinds of dialects spoken in Fujian today. Sorry we didn't clarify this. But talking of origin, the widely known version of "Hokkien" was also brought from China's Central Plain centuries ago, as a matter of fact.
