Bob, I just picked up a used RL 550 B, my initial foray into reloading. I got a fairly well equipped machine with several caliber conversion kits and a set of .357 Mag dies, one of the calibers I need. I just bought the .45 ACP die set and powder funnel, the conversion kit is similar to the .308 (included) except the powder funnel. I followed along setting up my first set of dies using this outstanding video. You made it easy even for a novice. I did screw up the bullet seating die adjustment to start, but finally got it set right. I ready to start knocking out my first set of .45 ACP cartridges. Thanks so much.

Super video - Great voice and not annoying! You will bring people into the reloading world making it look this simple - which it is. The Dillon instructions are also fairly in sync with what you state, but I do my dies the exact same way you do it. With the primer flip tray - I used to do the same thing, I have gotten lazy now. I just put the on it...Pick up the sunny side up ones...Cover and flip...Pick up the sunny side up ones. No more shaking and trying to get the last 5-10 to flip.

One suggestion when setting up the power drop. Fill up the powder container on the Dillon about 1/2-2/3 full and then take measurements for weight of the power being dispensed. The amount of powder being dropped will change slightly from when the power container is full vs when it falls to 1/4 full or so. Also, after setting the lock nut for the powder drop, charge and measure the weights on 5-10 times. You may be surprised as even those may vary slightly. Keep your stroke even when reloading and also check your powder again after every 20-25 rounds to ensure the powder being dispensed is what you want. There can never be too much in the way of quality control and safety when reloading.

Your last comment about the crimping die made a critical error. 9mm is supposed to have that ledge where the case meets the bullet. 9mm indexes on the leading edge of the case. If you crimp it till its flush with the bullet, you are going to have problems.

Nice video. Just one word of caution. The 9 mm head spaces on the case, so a crimp is not recommended . Since you are flaring the mouth of the case at station 2, a very light crimp is needed to get it right. I don’t crimp and I also don’t flare/bell my casings and it works fine . Good job!
@funbro16 жыл бұрын
It seems to work just fine the way that is shown in the video, I have made and fired 1000's of rounds this way with no issue. The flare just makes it easier to load and the crimp is not that significant. Thanks for watching.

At 3:14 did you take that part off of your Powder holder? Mine came with something that looks just like that attached right to the powder holder. Now I'm a little confused. I haven't looked at the manual yet sorry.
@funbro110 жыл бұрын
Yes, the powder holder was off the press (at 3:14)until the second (powder)die was installed. Once it is installed the powder holder must be put back on because the powder funnel will raise up with the case if the powder funnel is not in place. You will see a "channel" around the top of the powder die, this is where the powder holder "locks" the powder funnel in and allows it to expand the case. I usually just tighten the 2 screws hand tight and have had no problem with 1000's of rounds. You will have to make the final adjustments with the powder holder on the machine. Hope this help. Thanks
@hitmhard10 жыл бұрын
funbro1 Things are starting to make more sence to me. I noticed that you only bought a three pc die set. The die that was on the powder system needs to be taken off to drop the part in from the conversion kit to bell the casing to except the bullet. This enables it to do both functions. bell and powder. So one of the dies from my 4pc from lee is going to be useless. Am I right here?
@funbro110 жыл бұрын
Yes, but you can order just a powder die from Dillon.

This is a very helpful video. I do have a question on the crimping portion. You can also measure the crimp with your caliper to right. I mean don't you have to follow the measurements for crimping as well?

True, you could use the calipers to measure. The best bet is to cycle a few rounds through the gun (without firing) to make sure they eject correctly.

Hi nice video. I'm a bit confused on one part, you showed the dies you got from dillon and there was only 3 but when your setting it up you have 4?
@funbro110 жыл бұрын
Jason Brett When you order your dies from Dillon they will send you 3 dies of the correct size PLUS a powder funnel of the correct size. The powder funnel that comes with the 3 die set fits into the powder die. The powder die must be purchased separately but will work with many different calibers so it can be reused. The only reason to purchase more than one powder die is to make it easier to change calibers (have one powder die for each caliber) but then you would need to also purchase another tool head for each caliber. Hope this helps. Thanks for the good question.
@richardluteyii153210 жыл бұрын
funbro1 Glad I was not the only one with this question. I just purchases a 55B from ebay that has plates already set up for 45ACP, 44mag, and 357mag. I also has two power dies included. Now I understand that I just have to buy the 9mm die set. Quick question - I believe that I am right in thinking that a "conversion kit is also need for each caliber - is this correct? I am really looking forward to get started in reloading (I turn a lot of money into smoke)! Videos like yours will help me a bunch.
@funbro110 жыл бұрын
Richard Lutey II That is correct, you will need to purchase a conversion kit for almost every caliber of die set that you purchase. Note: some sizes may overlap and work for more than one caliber. The conversion kit is what holds the shell in place while the press does it's job through the dies. The conversion kit (consisting of the shell plate and locator buttons) work together to hold the shells in place as they travel from station to station on your press. Hopefully this helps, it is kind of hard to explain but once you start loading you will be able to see how it all comes together and understand why all the parts are necessary.
@richardluteyii153210 жыл бұрын
funbro1 I am still a little confused. In your response to Jason you stated that the powder funnel comes with the 3 die set. Looking the Dillion catalog I see that the powder funnel comes with the caliber conversion kit. Thanks in advance for your response.

If I'm not mistaken you are not supposed to EVER touch primers with bare skin, to avoid getting corrosive skin oil on them. Since this is probably a popular newb video I would think that should be a habit you want to avoid early on. Thanks for the vid, I'm deciding right now what reloader to buy.
@funbro110 жыл бұрын
mntbighker While it is probably best to try to avoid touching primers with oily hands the very very rare occasion that it might cause a problem is so extremely unlikely that it is a mute point. Especially if your hands are not greasy or dirty and you shoot your ammo in a relatively short amount of time. I guess if you have just changed the oil in the car, or your a mechanic and did not wash your hands before excessively rubbing all of your primers and plan to store said ammo for an extended period of time, then you may have possibly created a problem. Of course there are the purists that insist that a primer NEVER be touched and on that matter the brass should never be touched for the same reason also...In short I guess if you are worried about contaminating a primer with the oils from your skin then that's not a bad thing and probably a good habit to get into, but many people that reload 10's of thousands of rounds have have touched random primers at sometime during reloading without any problems. I would highly recommend the RL550B, it is a solid press that will easily load 400 rounds an hour which is plenty for the average shooter. Thanks for watching.
@mntbighker10 жыл бұрын
funbro1 I was coming at it from the perspective that you are instructing people who are brand new to this, and may as well form the right habits. I agree with everything you said though. Thanks for the vids.

Would this work for 44mag/45 Colt, and is there a newer version or is this one still good for every thing, thanks

How do you like Dillon die sets? Some swear by lee that they are the best but being new to the game I have no way of knowing which to go with. Thoughts?

I love the Dillon Dies but that's all I use so I cannot honestly compare. Thanks for the question.

I suppose most die sets are the same, unless you get in the competition or titanium carbide quality. Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge.

Robert Crabtree Thanks for watching, I thought a video like this might help people when they go to set up their press or change out the dies.

I notice most die sets come with 3, where does the 4th one come from??
@funbro17 жыл бұрын
dom j It must be ordered separately or it can be switched out between calibers but I found it nice to just order one for each setup. Thanks for the question.
