I’ll do you one better a far better point/desire : please devs don’t fucking have under mesh because most wanna be tryhard clans abuse tf out of undermesh, that does not mean most people go for it but in all the different eras I played it in years ago there was many many shitters that depended and had no shame at all in using undermesh it was ridiculous having to raid them inside their own undermesh. Even if they got reported they’d make new accounts and make another undermesh somewhere else. It doesn’t get more ridiculous than that.

Dune is propably the hardest game franchise to make melee right because of the special nature of the shields. Not seeing even a second of melee in the trailer reinforces my skepticism. I want you to succeed but time will tell. Let's wait and see

Honestly, shields on Arrakis are pretty much moot in ground combat except for very few worm secure areas. So simply not having any is not a big deal really.

It’ll also be interesting to see how they implement the fact that those shields are capable of attracting the sand worms. The vibrations of the shields is like a beacon to the worms, so using one on the sand is basically instant death.

Lot of concerns saying "You can play how you want" but most survival games that say that have always on pvp or forced pvp which for some people just do not want to deal with, especially logging in and you no longer have a base because someone decided to blow it up while you were sleeping.

They talked about a "safe area" and an "pvp always on" area of the map. Sounds a bit like taking a sort of Eve Online approach. Yes, you can get more resources from that pvp area, but it will be difficult due to other players and that the area will be wiped weekly.

I appreciated that in SWG if other people used your crafted items, you got XP for it. One thing I did not like about the SWG harvesting system is no notice when you harvesters ran out of power or when the hoppers were full, so you have to bounce from planet to planet just to check on power or empty hoppers.

I've been playing so many MMO's over the past 20 years trying to find something similar to what SWG was back in the day. I hope this offers a similar feeling of wonder and exploration. Maybe Black Desert is the closest in terms of the sandbox, but it feels more like a single player RPG populated by players

i suggest start saving up money, because you know this game is going to cost 70dollars and have a ingame shop that will have all the cool stuff, the base game will never seen anything cool or spectacular. just take a look at there other games, especially conan exiles, that ingame shop is INSANELY GREEDIE, and at first that game has zero ingame shop, so dune will be the same, starts off with no shop to hook in everyone then after some time boom. i have zero trust left in funcom, they should rename them to unfun.

There is an air of discretion to this entire direct. The director will say what is in the game but provide little to no specific details about it. “There are abilities”, “there is political survival”, “the game has a full leveling system” like what? He is saying so much without really saying anything. Not to mention the fact there is absolutely zero gameplay to corroborate what he is saying. It’s still too early to say much, but press like this in the current video game development culture makes me super wary. Felt like I learned nothing about the game.

The lady with the haircut is, uh....yeah. anyways, lot of focus on visuals and atmosphere, very little information about game mechanics, how the game will actually play. "Co-op building" yeah I guess that's cool? combat sounds remedial, instead of having character classes that are unique, classes and character "types" (mentat, bene gesserit, house soldier, etc) have been reduced to "go to the "great schools" and learn ability X/Y/Z and now you're a bene gesserit" - this is LAME, I really thought that this would be more like the Star Wars: Galaxies MMO when it first launched, with deep character classes that have their own story missions which let you unlock all the unique powers that come with being that class, and you move through the open world interacting with the other broader game mechanics - if you want to do politics and assassination stuff, choose bene gesserit, if you actually want to live the life of a spice miner you choose miner or maybe smuggler, if you want to fight for dune independence you go fremen, etc etc. Instead we have this "do whatever you want!" system where you just sort of pick up whatever abilities you like...which is dumb, not just because it doesn't actually ask the player to commit to a defined class and so roleplay is meaningless, and also because with this system, people will quickly figure out the best ability combinations for combat and other things and then everyone will follow the meta and just run that. The more they reveal about this game, the more I realize that it will never be like SW:G or Eve Online or any of the other great player-driven MMOs - it's going to be Conan exiles: Dune edition. Disappointing to say the least

My guess is there will be PvE areas and PvP areas in the game. They were talking about the "deep desert" where the Coriolis storms change the map as being the place where endgame PvP happens, and that you can just be a crafter or architect or whatever if you don't want to PvP. Also, Ultima Online, which I played at release and for a while after, was already dying when they introduced PvE "Trammel", but doing so massively accelerated the death of that game. Also, for folks who don't like PvP, it's often a much more palatable, and can even become a fun and meaningful experience, when you group up with teams of players that will show you the ropes, and have your back.

Secret World was the best mmo ever! I don't care much for sci-fi movies, but I will play Dune, only because Funcom made it. Conan Exile is my fav survival so far

conan exiles was build upon some fun mechanics but the game overall is a mess, and I mean A MESS. if same problems that exiles had surface here also, it will flop hard and the trailers didnt convince me otherwise yet. they should have drop ancient survival mechanics like grinding for mines and building bases old school. dune has so unique mechanics in terms of lore and way of life, they could have go crazy for innovations. but it seems they chose to play safe, and boring.

Conan Exiles has a single player mode in that game if this is anything like Conan was which to be fair is Funcoms best game by far so I expect them to somewhat be using that as is its building point. That being said Conan Exiles had servers that would host a number of players if they wanted to play online with the game. Perhaps that is something their looking to do again.

Hopefully you can choose your character's appearance and house, or you can start as a Fremen or Atreides. I also hope that you also introduce good dialogues and make it possible for advanced players to ride sandworms and use desert tents etc. so that the game comes very close to the film and the books. It would also be cool to be able to use the voice in at least npcs. Hopefully your production team will prioritize quality over quantity and make the game a complete success, because then I'll definitely be looking for it!

The hard thing about designing a game like this is keeping losers engaged. Like, when you have a PvP rich sandbox like this, the game can quickly become unfun for anyone who's lower down on the food chain. Then, when they quit, the winners get bored and quit too, because losers are content for winners. There's got to be a way to ensure that your entire gameplay experience isn't being spent on being content for a stronger player or stronger player organization to consume. I tend to steer clear of pvp-centric games with heavy loss mechanics for this reason. It's a time-proven unsustainable dynamic, but I'm interested in seeing how this dev team finds possible solutions for this.

Some old text based MUDs did this by rewarding the playstyles of different groups of people with different reward systems. For instance the PVP centric players had better long term scaling at the disadvantage of a much steeper barrier to entry whereas the other faction encouraged co operation and inclusion and were easier to play and generally could counteract their weaknesses by more readily banding together to combat their opponents. Also use of environment and terrain and territorial control was elegantly designed so that it naturally became easier for defenders to repel attacks the longer an opponent was invading a territory. This wasn’t done by artificial means but by player actions, environment and agency. All of these factors would come together in such a way as to invite an attacker into a blitz only for them to discover themselves trapped if they lingered too long. It was enormously more interesting and involved on the social side of things and I am somewhat oversimplifying for reasons of brevity. Doing this in a graphical environment is a taller task but can done with the same tools and planning.

How do we defend our bases from enemies on the Z axis? If enemy players have access to Ornithopters then they can just fly into your base and grief you regardless of how tall your walls are.
