I have been on keto due to a traumatic brain injury that led to epilepsy. The ketogenic diet controls my seizures and has been dramatically helping my recovery process. I wish more people with TBI knew about it! Even if you don’t have seizures, it works wonders for brain inflammation

Being in Ketosis for one year now. Weight loss in the beginning is mainly fluids. Carbs bind lots of water. However it feels good :) I lost about 17kg in 6 months and still I had significant belly fat. Since 6 month weight is stable but body composition improved. Less belly fat, less belly diameter, more muscle mass. To get lean it takes a long time but it is worth it and it is _easy_ on keto.

I'm not so sure Dr. Hyman really understands the Atkins Diet. I was on it when I was a teenager. My family rarely had steak because of its cost. I just ate protein, mostly chicken and sometimes fish and green non-starchy vegetables. I lost 55 pounds in 3 months. The Diet is a low carb diet, which usually works anyway. It doesn't stress eating steaks, pork or high fat foods, it really stresses pretty much green vegetables, meat, whether it's chicken, fish or steak, minimal dairy if at all and little to no fruit. Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet (remember that fad) is the same thing with an updated name.

The best way to get fat adapted and used to the ketogenic diet is starting with fasting, particularly 24 hours. Then go into breaking the fast with fat. I got adapted so quick that I don't crave sugar, carbs and food in general. I eat when my body tells me it's time and that's usually after 4pm.

I’m 55 and been doing clean ketogenic diet with 18/6 intermittent fasting and my weight is down from 209 to 184 , my blood glucose down from 177 to 105 at one hour after dinner, my BP down from 162/96 to 128/74 and I haven’t had acid reflux after the first several days into this diet , before keto I had to constantly take Prilosec . Apple cider vinegar has been a huge part of my keto diet, 2 tablespoons of it and of lemon juice in 16oz water three times a day has helped my gerd reflux heartburn issues. My energy is high and mood is great! I have “fatty liver” and learning that keto will reverse fatty liver got me onboard to work towards better health . I challenge everyone to check out the research about all the benefits that healthy ketogenic diet offers . Thanks Dr Hyman for great commentary, especially pointing out the importance of the glycemic index of foods and how to keep your insulin down . 🤩🇺🇸

A bi-annual blood testing regimen with particle size testing, DEXA scan, CAC test, general health screening, etc. I'd guess that the keto population who might utilize this [AFFORDABLE] program would also allow their anonymous health markers be recorded for future analysis.

I've had luck not treating carbs as the enemy, but seeing it as something to keep in balance. You need to be mindful and try to severely reduce or eliminate white/refined carbs/sugar and incorporate a limited amount of whole grain bread. I know hardcore ketos frown upon this, but it has never stopped me from shedding the weight. You have to be realistic about reduction and watching what kind of carbs you take in, not treat it as this black spot in your mind. Essentially, you're doing exactly what people already know but don't want to admit: stop eating excess, especially in the form of things that you know puts on weight (pop tarts, cookies without end or count, muffins, tons of bread, etc etc.)

He recommended tempeh: fermented soy. This food is a real Jekyll/ Hyde: it's great for many reasons but creates a highly acidic landscape in our systems. We need to be alkaline, about 7 on the ph scale. Fermented foods like tempeh are acid: 6 and below. If you eat yogurt, tempeh, sauerkraut, kombucha, etc. you can find your ph down at 3...you'll be feeling dreadful and won't😢 know why. Fermented foods taste great, digest easily and feel great to your gut BUT should only be used sparingly or you'll find yourself in a real jam. Good to get ph test strips and keep your ph monitored. Much health food info recommends fermented foods but it's really rare to learn about this dangerous flip side of the story. Also, look into "oxalates" - highly toxic substances in spinach, kale, etc. plus "lectins" in grain. We need to be wise and not simply accept conventional wisdom on "health food."

If you have sleep apnea like Del Griffith in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, then you are probably not going to lose weight because of the additional complications. It sounds like the good doctor is saying that we all have individual biology and biomes within our bodies so we need to customize the ketogenic diet to meet our individual needs.

@roblovegreen

Bobby Ocampo Just shoot for somewhere close to that ratio in total calories and you will be fine. Imagine a large plate full of steamed vegetables, a piece of meat the size of a deck of cards and a quarter stick of butter melted poured over top. Then eat that meal until full and don’t worry about counting calories. If you get too much protein it will move you out of ketosis but it’s a sliding scale. You can eat high protein with lots of fat and still be in a mild state of ketosis. This is the case with the carnivore diet. 🤓

Jason Fung - A "mycotoxin " is a toxic secondary metabolite produced by organisms of the fungus kingdom and is capable of causing disease and death in both humans and other animals. The term 'mycotoxin' is usually reserved for the toxic chemical products produced by fungi that readily colonize crops = Mycotoxins are toxic compounds that are naturally produced by certain types of moulds (fungi). Moulds that can produce mycotoxins grow on numerous foodstuffs such as cereals, dried fruits, nuts and spices. -Aflatoxins are amongst the most poisonous mycotoxins and are produced by certain moulds (Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus) which grow in soil, decaying vegetation, hay, and grains. Crops that are frequently affected by Aspergillus spp. include cereals (corn, sorghum, wheat and rice), oilseeds (soybean, peanut, sunflower and cotton seeds), spices (chili peppers, black pepper, coriander, turmeric and ginger) and tree nuts (pistachio, almond, walnut, coconut and Brazil nut). The toxins can also be found in the milk of animals that are fed contaminated feed, in the form of aflatoxin M1. Large doses of aflatoxins can lead to acute poisoning (aflatoxicosis) and can be life threatening, usually through damage to the liver. Aflatoxins have also been shown to be genotoxic, meaning they can damage DNA and cause cancer in animal species. There is also evidence that they can cause liver cancer in humans. Ochratoxin A is produced by several species of Aspergillus and Penicillium and is a common food-contaminating mycotoxin. Contamination of food commodities, such as cereals and cereal products, coffee beans, dry vine fruits, wine and grape juice, spices and liquorice, occurs worldwide. www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/mycotoxins -

Can keto have bad effect on peramenapausal women and their hormones.
@puddlesplasher7
@puddlesplasher7 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's going to increase hormonal issues. Decreasing animal products and moving toward a whole food plant based way of eating is the way to go for perimenopausal symptoms and hormone balance. Fiber is going to help with hormones, a lot. Dr. Neal Barnard and Dr. Greger have tons of info on this.

Hi! Has anybody with MODY Typ 2 (GCK-Mutation) experience with ketogenic diet? Around 1-5% of persons are maldiagnosed as Typ 1 and 2 Diabetes, but belonging to the MODY-Group. Especially MODY 2 patients with a mutation of the Glucokinase-Gen have a specific metabolism, that not even react very well on insulin treatement. From my perspective this could be a reasonable explanation why some people have astonishing results within just a couple of days. Same thing with the athlete, who eats a lot of carbs and in theory should burn it while training, but comes out with a pre-diabetes diagnose without having factors like overweight, too less excersice, cardiovascular problems etc. Because GCK-MODY is characterized by a increased internal new-building of glucose (gluconeogenesis) and changed storage of glucose. Seems logical for me... I would appreciate more scientific underlined information or personal experiences for this subject. Have a nice day!

I have been doing ketogenic diet, when I started I was 60 pounds heavier and my A-1 C was 12.5 now I am just at 200 pounds I’ve lost 60 pounds in my A-1 C is it 5.6 I don’t even need insulin the other health benefits aside of lowering my blood pressure improved improved cognitive function just for the blood sugar affect only do I recommend this to anyone with diabetes type two .many doctors do not like it because they don’t get the insulin sales they used to .all kidding aside ketogenic diet deals with insulin resistance ,not putting a Band-Aid on a broken spine. But fixing the problem and all of the cascading other issues the insulin resistance brings with it I have been on every other diet known to man they all made me lose some weight but they were impossible to stay on and none of them zero not one touched my blood sugar issue .

We love you Dr. Mark Hyman, however when you answered the question about Being on the keto genic diet long term, you said that it’s only for therapeutic use and you use the example that you wouldn’t stay on blood pressure medication when she would shoot a loa being on the keto genic diet long term, you said that it’s only for therapeutic use and you use the example that you wouldn’t stay on blood pressure medication once you achieved low blood pressure. So you are suggesting that someone who loses weight, reverses their diabetes, should go back on the standard American diet? Gain all the weight back, and bring back their diabetes? Just because there haven’t been long-term studies doesn’t mean that commonsense doesn’t tell us that it’s working & healthier for us to eat Real Whole Foods.

Maybe I'm still doing keto wrong. I use a lot of dairy, especially cream. I'm TRYING to beat diabetes without medicine, with little good results. I tried keto, lost 30, gained 5, all while continuing the same continuity. In fact, so far, light fasting has not helped. I went from 7 pm to 2:50 pm, checked blood sugar and was 105! Very frustrating. I think things like this makes people want to give up. I wish this was unusual for me, but so far, with absolutely NO refined Anything anymore, i have not become a non diabetic yet. I'm not giving up, though; i can't! At this point, as far as i know, my diabetes is due to still being morbidly obese (5'2, 205 pounds).

Yes, the cholesterol will slightly go up most of the time. The LDL (which is not necessarily that bad) but also the HDL (which definitely is good). Cholesterol is a very bad marker for Cvd risk. Maybe watch something from Ivor Cummins here on KZbin or Dave Feldman and eventually you will get to Dr. Phinney and Dr. Mike Eades. The carbs (not talking about brocolli etc.) have the ability along with seed oils to oxidize the LDL and that is the moment when it is actually very bad! Apart from that don't be too afraid of cholesterol in general. Reducing the inflammation in the body is much more important. Good luck with all.

And When lockdown end I will be able to visit everywhere without shitting myself. I am grateful for my body for kicking out the toxic food ,I was feeding it with. My doctor told me that your body is fighting your food like fighting bad bacteria. Now looking bag. My body was right. I now eat most organic veg and fruits. Organic meat in moderation. No more sugar pizza or Kentuky Fried Chicken. I boil my own at home. I am not taking any med for ulcerative colitis. No feeling cold most of the year. I feel 14 but biologically 40

I need to pass on some info to my daughter. My daughter wants to have band surgery for her stomach as she is tired of being fat. She has an immune disease plus thyroid problems. I want her to try this, but she insists that her body doesn't do things most people respond to. Is this diet good for her, and if not how can she lose weight as that could be causing more problems. If so, is there something specific she should do? Thank you for your time.

Mary Bagley I would encourage your daughter to try it. You could go on it with her. That way she will have a support system. My boyfriend and I have been on a keto diet for 8 months and he has lost 25 pounds and is now off most medications. He is no longer pre- diabetic. I have lost weight and have never felt better. Great energy and clear thinking. Before, I fought brain fog all day. We eat delicious meals and deserts...all Keto. There are so many products and recipes out there that make it easy. Good luck!

Mary Bagley, this would help for sure. Guy I know did that kind of surgery and now many years later is fat again due to stress in his life. Also she would have a lots of loose skin with this surgery and subsequent weight loss. What kind of autoimmune disease does she have? Coimbra protocol is very helpful for some of them. Do lots of research and also she will need to do fasting. It may be good to do genetic test to see what is going on. Some of us have issues with detoxing because our genetic changes so our bodies need extra help. It is very important to eat good quality food(pasture raised meat & eggs, wild fish and organic veg and berries), have filterred water, remove toxins from our homes, cosmetics, etc,...

Why is Keto diet only a "therapeutic diet" if it corrects so many different health issues? And why wouldn't such a healthy diet be best for long-term use? I think many doctors are still afraid of it, including Dr. Hyman. Many people have been on Carnivore diets for 10+ years and are doing great, and Carnivore is a LOT more restrictive than Keto.

At minute 15 the statement regarding the health benefits for a person suffering from T2D is profound. I am on Keto and have lost weight and have checked my blood...I am still on statins however....I'd like to come off of them but will need to try it with my doctors supervision. I'd love to hear what you think the acceptable ranges for HDL/LDL etc., would be considering the perspective that the Keto diet has turned the food pyramid upside down...are our target numbers for HDL/LDL also a bit out of date with reality?
