One idea: Build a dedicated staircase on wheels. It can double as mobile storage. Could look kinda cool if you put some effort into it. Maybe paint the FRP behind the drill and grinder a darker grey, then it will never look dirty. We had those walls at an old garage I worked at, and they actually do hold a lot of dirt. Epoxy floors don't hold up, but man I am so happy with my polycuramide coating. Rocksolid brand. I have some chips and dings it in it now, but it's 8 years old now. The biggest benefit is all the reflected light, and if you drop something small, you can find it really quickly. I think the coating you put on there is okay, but if you want to make a change, consider it at some point. The removable shelf doors are super cool, love how you can hang them on other ones. Way cool. Anyway man.... just huge, huge, huge upgrade. I'm sure it'll get messy again, but having a base like this is going to help so much moving forward. Congrats man!
@GarageTimeAutoResto3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the great suggestions. Believe it or not I need to cram two cars in this space every night and be able to open the doors. I like the idea of a staircase, but I can also stand on my welding table or even the tool box. FRP actually comes in grey which I almost got. Will see how the white holds up against the wire wheel dirt slinger. White keeps it lite and brite for now. My floors are so banged up I think any coating would have a hard time bonding and holding up to molten metal blobs. I read that shot blasting is the way to go now, but that is so disruptive to my shop to move everything out wait for it to cure, yada yada. I just don't get that excited about floors.

Tom you do outstanding work , its much nicer to work in a clean well-lit comfortable shop .( I worked in 13 shops in 58 Years on this earth) and you are the swiss army knife of men. you do plumping painting carpentry drywall electrical work and masonry work and all forms of auto repair and restoration , its impressive....
@GarageTimeAutoResto3 ай бұрын
Thank you. I was going to do another long winded comparison of carpentry versus automotive work, but I didn't. Some stuff does parallel each other. Joint compound = Bondo aka mud in both fields of work. Wall texture = undercoating (applied in a very similar gun to be honest) Airless sprayer = HVLP gun (this one is a bit of a stretch) Twist Connectors = Crimp connectors Automotive materials are so much nicer than house carpentry stuff. I had problems with the drywall tape bubbling when the texture went on. Come to find out I was spreading it too hard like bondo and was squeezing too much out under the tape. It's live and learn I guess, but the automotive materials are so much nicer to work with. Those twist connectors are pretty bad to be honest.

Hi Tom. Your garage remodel looks great and well thought out too. You've really done a lot with a small 19'x19' garage. I also do a lot of work in my garage. Over the years I've completed around 8-9 complete car rebuilds in it, so I appreciate what you do in your small space. A couple of quick thoughts: I'm in northern California so we don't get real cold weather like much of the nation does, but my garage is detached, so it still gets plenty cold and moist during the winter months. After years of thinking about it I finally purchased and installed a gas unit heater in a back corner of my garage. It hangs from the ceiling and blows warm air across the entire garage. I put a thermostat on the wall over my workbench and on cold winter days and evenings running it for even an hour or two takes the chill off and also dries any moisture in the air which I found was coating bare parts and tools with a light film of rust. Also, it can get almost too hot to work in my garage during the summer, so I installed an attic fan running it out of a gable end through an exterior vent. It has made a nice difference in reducing the overall garage temperature on hot days. Last, I notice you don't have ceiling insulation in your rafters. Insulation in your garage rafters can make a difference in keeping your garage at a nice temperature both in cold and hot weather. All of these projects are DIY and not costly, but they can make a real difference in working conditions in your garage. Good luck with your new garage. I think you will enjoy working in it.
@GarageTimeAutoResto3 ай бұрын
I've worked in this space for many years and I'm fortunate to have great temperatures year around thanks to the Pacific Ocean. The end of this video you can hear my fan. As long it blows directly on me I can work any day of the year. In the winter a sweatshirt is all I need. Last week we had a very warm week and it still wasn't that bad.

I am a huge fan of you knowledge, skill and patience. Two things-FRP is available in black and it looks really great. Second it glues really well to plywood. So you could glue it to 1/4 inch for your cabinet faces. Keep rockin' out!
@GarageTimeAutoResto3 ай бұрын
Thank you. I almost bought the grey color, but decided to keep it lite and brite. Will see how it holds up. I use that wire wheel a lot to clean stuff and the dirt goes straight into the wall. Great suggestion on using the FRP as cabinent faces. It would be cheaper than aluminum, but heavier.

Awesome work Tom. Your space looks like a fantastic combination of professional and functional. I love the open ceiling space, that's a much easier way to access that area than a manhole with a ladder. Top work, you should be very proud of the result. Looking forward to seeing what comes next!

Thank you, it's a big change for me. The open center "manhole" is something I've been wanting to do for a long time. I've been storing things up there for a while, but now it's nicer and bigger. Of course id rather have a bigger place, but this really is the best use of space I could conceive. Next week 356!

Looks fantastic, Tom!! What you'll find, years ago when I did what you've just done, I worked both 'cleaner'... and more efficiently with a clean, organized shop. I'd have only done one thing different, and that's a personal choice. I'd have painted the attic white, so it reflected the light down, rather than black, which absorbs light. Your "Closet".... I had a 10x12 shed outside to store stuff inside. Whatever works for you, is the best solution... Well done...............

Awesome look; How are you going to keep track of whats stored above in boxes? there will be a time when your looking for something and can't remember what box you placed it in.or where it's located. A simple spread sheet listing item and location so you're not dragging up and down and back up because it's not in that box? For your cabinet doors I would use magnets instead of holes and lag bolts; the holes in time will get elongated. These are not suggestion, just different thought process. Mahalo

Thank you and great feedback. There are 4 bays on each side defined by the trusses, so I have like items organized in each bay and noted in google notes. It's not perfect, but at least I know which bay to look in. For example the one bay that I showed are all house tools, like circ saw, texture gun, mixer, sprayer etc. Magnets are a good idea too. Epoxied washers on the holes may also help. I like that the holes keep it straight every time and they are stackable.

Tom. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing - especially showing us the ‘closet’. A question and a thought. How’s the sealed floor when wet? Very slippery or just a little. I know you’re in SoCal. Here in NJ, I’d love that floor but worry about slipping on some melted snow/ice in winter. And. The ceiling/high mounted cabinets, did you consider hinges at the top with a mechanical or hydraulic strut? I’d hate the process of removing the doors and moving them around. The open attic storage is brilliant, it would be a game changer for me in my old barn.
@GarageTimeAutoResto3 ай бұрын
Everyone has a beloved closet❤ The floors are slippery when wet. I know because I've sponge mopped them already. There is a floor polish by the same company that improves slip resistance. I haven't applied it yet, but remind me and I'll let you know how it goes. Here's the link amzn.to/3ZgvJCv Not worried about rain/ice/snow as we get almost none here. I did think about an upper hinge, but it was too complicated/hard to reach/obstructs opening/etc. In reality my plan is to leave them off except the one day that I record KZbin videos, ha ha. Same with the drill press and grinder covers. I do like the upper storage area a lot.
