Update logging the design of a custom designed electric supercharger. While the internet is flooded with "electric superchargers" that do little more that spin a bilge fan, I believe that I've invented a solution that offers some potential usefulness. Next steps are to install it on a newer vehicle (E90 BMW, likely) and try for some quantitive dyno runs! For reference the vehicle in the video is a 1987 Mercedes Benz 300E that being worked on for an upcoming 24hr of LeMons race.

Would not be efficient at all. Turbo's are efficient because they scavange exhaust gas. On top of that, you're converting mechanical energy to chemical to electrical just to boost the car

This is a step in an AWESOME direction. Great concept and would be much easier to install than an entire turbo system. Something like this could be perfected soon. I’m waiting for that day. Put it on a naturally aspirated V8 with a good amount of horsepower like a lexus GS with VVT or a mustang GT.

The more I think about this, the more I like it. An electric supercharger would provide constant air flow which means the boost would taper off as RPMs increase. I am thinking a stock, or near stock fuel system might be adequate. And the power should feel very linear since you would be using nearly as much fuel and air at 3000 RPM’s as at 6000 RPMs.

Very cool project. Well done! May I ask, what kV and voltage you are running at and how large your turbine is? I see you are using one of the large inrunner Brushless motors intended for rc boats, have you hooked up the water cooling? And have you mounted the turbine directly to the motor shaft? Maybe you should try and use this one in conjunction with a traditional turbo, like Audi does. That way, your compressor only has to boost the engine for a short time, until it produces enough exhaust gases to spool up the normal turbo. This will save you lots of energy and you can use your compressor on larger cars too. Look up the Audi SQ7, maybe you can get some inspiration from it.

A 1.6 liter engine uses 168cfm @ 7000rpm so ruffly you will get a boost of 0.4bar , not to bad for a DIY and a toy brushless :) I imagine that 3d printed part leaks like hell tho :D. Use a dc to dc convertor to power up the turbo from the alternator, keep it all the time running to get boost. install a waste gate to regulate the boost and go from there.I think you will need to keep it at a constant 2-3k rmp for a limited boost lag . What Audi is working on is kinda more for eliminating turbo lag. The engine still has two (the one I saw) conventional turbos running off the exhaust. What they are making is something that just makes a short "burst" of boost kinda like a capacitor to fill the gap between hitting gas pedal and building boost from exhaust. It's unable to actually sustain boost but it can help with lag. That's how I understand it any. I could be wrong

electric superchargers have been in the market for quite a while now, but dyno shows it does not add power.. in the video, it showed that the blower, can put up some good pressure, but that does not mean it can move a good amount of volume of air more than what the engine can suck in while in full throttle at peak rpm.

run it on super caps bank. That turbo was design to operate at 70,000 to 100,000 rpm that motor won't make the horsepower required to drive it under full flow load and produce 10psi of pressure. Testing the pressure with the end capped off with the boost guage attach isn't a true indication of flow rate required while maintaining 10psi pressure into a full open motor throttle, 6 cycliner 3L. A super charged 600hp engine needs approx 100hp to spin the blower to make more power and overcome the initial 100hp load on the engine to run it. You need a whopping powerful brushless motor to get even close to the flow required. But it is possible

Hows the progress going? This in my mind would blow up (sales wise) if people learned about them more. This would be an amazing aftermarket forced induction option for people. Adjustable boost withing a split second disregarding engine rpm. Both superchargers and turbochargers spin faster based off of rpm. An electric supercharger would spin faster based on the controlled amount of current running to the electric motor on it. Fucking amazing idea.

I took a different approach. I used a 72vdc 250A Me 0913 BLDC to drive a Paxton Novi 2000 with a 2" 8mm belt drive at about 1:3.3 and put it in front of a .60 over 350ci. Static is 8 psi, but running it starts at 5 psi and is gone by red-line which is OK because I'm going to shift then anyway. With BLDC motors electric super-charging is definitely feasible but the trade-off is battery weight. My system would boost the hell out of a 2.0L but between the six lead-acids and the unit itself it's about 300 lbs; but of course additional weight doesn't make near as much difference when you're already on a roll. Most people underestimate just how much hp it takes to make boost above and beyond what the engine is capable of gulping down. A Hellcat blower for instance takes 65 hp off the crank to dive it at the factory 8 psi. What I would like to try next is eight off-the-shelf BLDC compressors on induction stacks, but that wouldn't be a cheap build. The one advantage of centrifugal blowers over roots is that they can be naturally aspirated through when at rest. It's definitely something that's going to catch on. Everybody that ever saw Mad Max has got the F-ing bug and it ain't never going to just go away.

@golgothapro 3 жыл бұрын
@Timbo Slice That sounds crazy but it makes sense to me because one is designed to move a lot of air and the other to compress it. I think much the same could be accomplished with a 1000 Watt bldc motor-drive off Ebay for about $50 and an alternator wired as a bldc motor; but I think it would require some kind of an inverted planetary to get the necessary compressor impeller speed.

but then you are adding in the issue these guys avoid, adding another restriction to exhaust flow. Granted Ford has already tested a system of dual turbo charging wherein the electric turbo covers the lower rev range and the exhaust driven turbo takes over in the higher range to avoid turbo lag and give a liner power band. So it probably could work but not as well as a twin-charged setup.

False. You don't need 50% extra. You need the correct amount for the power you want. It's not mandatory to boost up to 6000 rpm, you can increase the torque significantly at 3000 -4000 rpm and get only 10% increase at 6000, this is still significant. That's a fact that electric superchargers will replace soon aftermarket turbos on the street, but it's still cheaper for a car company to provide a turbo on a conventionnal production car. On a race track where you have the pedal to the floor 50% of the time a pure ESC cannot work, you need something else, regular turbo or hybrid like in F1.

Serge Campeau at 4000rpm 3.0l naturally aspirated engine with VE 100% will make 2000 intake cycles and consume 2000×3.0l=6000lpm=211.9CFM. From the graph wich was provided in video at 300cfm wich compressor can produce it will make preassure of only 3PSI , it wouldnt be a significant increase in power and if we go to higher rpm it would be decrease in power, maybe this compressor will work on smaller engine but not on 3.0l engine. To make echarger able to boost big engines you need higher voltage
@sergecampeau3610
@sergecampeau3610 6 жыл бұрын
Yes maybe it's too small for a 3L, but who cares about a 3L. Most production cars outside the US are 4 cyl below 2.5 L. It would still work well on a Mazda 3 2.5 L or a 2L. Furthermore, it might be possible to chose a better compressor wheel and volute for a higher CFM but that was probably not their goal. Their voltage is already high enough in my opinion, more current is still possible if needed. A real car company with big R&D budget will also design new compressor wheels from scratch in order to be more efficient at this kind of speed (80 000 rpm) instead of using an existing wheel that is supposed to operate around 180 000 rpm. I have made my own research on this and it's not possible to be close to the most efficient spot with existing components.

Hmm, maybe my calculations are off but I thought a 3.0L engine flows about 300cfm in NA form at around 5500rpm? So looking at that flow graph, you'll be lucky to make any boost at all up high in the rev range. I am an advocate for electric s.chargers but for this application you'd need more compressor rpm to get any decent boost into the intake.

Would be great, but airflow is not high enough to be useful for most engines. 5-6 liter is pretty common (for anything other than a small car) @ 5000rpm uses at least 450cfm.

I'd try a gear driven turbine to up the rpm some more... the brushless motor and lipo's are nice, but it would eat thru batteries

But this is an actual good design with quality built components by people that aren't just looking to push out a plastic part to sell to idiots that think they are going to make more power with something that will eventually explode into their intake tract and send plastic shards into the combustion chambers. This is a well designed, well thought out supercharger built with quality components.

so am I right in assuming it can't even flow 600cfm? by the graph, seeing how it drops way off even at 300cfm, pressure above that won't even be above atmospheric.

I dont get why you would not want to use the waste exhaust gasses like any "normal" turbo, as its way more efficient anyways

This is dope. Its possible for an electric motor to hit the rpm needed for a compressor to make boost if it doesn't draw from the battery

The motor they are using is a hobby grade rc one. It maxes out at 30,000rpm, so it won't work well as is. Better motor and they may have something.

Even if this works... which I doubt it would, has nobody thought about what this would do to the internals? Normally Aspirated use high compression, if boost is added in whatever form except for liquid, you need to convert, i;e swap out the internals for low compression.... Right?

if you install this electrical turbo. do you need to upgrade the cars ECU too? i have a 1.6L with 77KW 155NM. what gain will i be getting when i run the electrical turbo?
@stavyone
@stavyone 7 жыл бұрын
Welile Boysie Welile Boysie if your making 77kw at the flywheel with this junk you will make about 70 kW you will loose 7kw and the car will sound like a leaf blower ! These do not work as they do not work with engine rpm and cause a restriction ! People selling these things should be locked up for deceiving the public ! If you want save money and put a tiny little turbo on it and you will make power !

people are talking about how an electrical device can run in a car without using the engines power but alternators are 50% efficient only so for each 500w of current you draw from the cars electrical system you are loosing 1000w from the engine...because YES the alternator does not generate free electricity, it spins freely when under zero load but once it starts charging it offers high resistance to rotation due to magnetic forces inside and it "steals" power from the engine....and the higher the demand for current, the harder it is to spin it...now add the inefficiency of an electric motor then add losses of transforming movement-rotation of a turbine into airflow and you get a very higly inefficient turbo...maybe its good for a toy but its no replacement for a real turbo

Reminds me of roadkill strapping leaf blowers to a V8. In reality, its a myth and it isn't going to work. If the electric turbo could produce a solid 20psi it'd be worthwhile, but the weight of the batteries would off-set the benefit.
