I can’t thank you enough Simon you are an amazing teacher! I have just passed my Level 2 Functional Skills Maths Exam at the age of 48! I’ve always managed to get by without needing a Maths GCSE until now. I have had a career change and needed it to be able to finish my Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing. I have taught myself the maths syllabus in 4 months by watching your videos and practicing the exam papers that you go through. I have learnt more maths in these four months than I have in a lifetime. Please keep it up your brilliant and inspiring. Thank you :)

Just passed my Functional Skills Level 2 Maths and I'm in no doubt that I wouldn't have, without watching theses videos. I fully recommend that anyone looking to pass Level 2 Maths, whether it be with City & Guilds, Edexcel or in any other format, should watch these videos. Although some of the Maths is probably stuff you already know? from what I see, some of the reasons people fail these exams is that the questions are sometimes overly complicated and trying to understand what is actually being asked stops you from using the Maths you probably already know, to answer the question correctly. Simon does a great job of not only explaining the Maths in a simple way to understand, but also (and more importantly, I would say) how to interpret the exam style questions. Thank you very much. Keep up the good.

So did you just prepare for the exam watching these videos? Dis it really help you?
@davidking21512 жыл бұрын
@@NA-bf6ul Not only the videos, I also had some online lessons through my training provider, but to be honest, I learnt more in hour of watching Simons videos than I did in five or more online lessons. The test papers are as close to the actual test itself as you can get. If you get used to the structure of the questions before you take your exams it’ll be a massive help and that’s exactly what is so useful watching these videos and learning how to answer the questions. I basically started each video, stopped at the start of each question, worked out the answers and then checked it afterwards with Simon going through the process. I found that one of the best ways to learn. Hope that’s a help.

Q11 The tank hold 60 litres 60-15=45 45 litres = 480 480÷3=160 15 litres =160
@SimonHTT5 ай бұрын
Unfortunately that doesn't work. 45 litres represents three-quarters of a tank but 480 miles is for a full tank, which means you're not comparing like with like. So you want 480÷4 rather than 480÷3. But we need to do 15÷60 first to show where we are getting the 4 (quarters) from.

If we knew what 1 litre was equal to then yes, we would multiply by 10. But we know what 4.546 litres is equal to, so if we multiplied by 10 that would tell us how many gallons are equal to 45.46 litres. We want to know what number multiplied by 4.546 gives us 10, and then use that to scale up the gallons. So we do the inverse (opposite) operation of multiply which is divide (10 / 4.546 = 2.2) to then multiply by 1 gallon. You can do a sense check as well. 4.546 is close to 5, so if 5 litres = 1 gallon, 10 litres would be about 2 gallons, which isn't too far away from 2.2.

Your question 11 is different to mine on the Non calculator. I downloaded the paper directly from city and guilds website, mine says "A car can travel 480 miles on a full tank of petrol. The tank hold 60 litres. A driver fills the tank and sets off on a journey. How many litres of petrol will be left in the car when the car has travelled 360 miles?

Sorry to hear you haven't been successful with the exam. I know you're working for level 2 but it might be worth trying some level 1 questions, particularly the longer scenario/wordy type ones. This would give you the chance to practice them with less complex maths and then you can move back to level 2 when you're feeling more confident.

i dont understand the triangle area... 1/2 x 4 x 3 ? but you don't do 1/2 x 4 you said 1/2 of 4 x 3. so 2 x 3 = 6.. im confused
@SimonHTT6 ай бұрын
The are of a triangle is equal to 0.5 x base x height. Because they're all multiplied together, it doesn't matter which order you multiply them. You can do 0.5 x 4 = 2, then 2 x 3 = 6. Or, you can do the 4 x 3 =12 first then 0.5 x 12 = 6. Either way, you should end up with the same answer.

Hi Simon, Q11. You rounded £10.80 to £10.00. I would have gone up to £11:00. What rule am I missing here, plz help?
@SimonHTT29 күн бұрын
There's no strict rule when rounding for approximation, you just want to do something which is sensible (or reasonable). You can round to the nearest £1, as you suggest, but you can also round to the nearest £10, which is what I've done as it then makes the calculation simpler. Ideally, approximation should involve making the calculations simple enough to do quickly without a calculator but without losing too much accuracy or making the answer worthless.

On question 12.. am just wondering is the probability decreasing or increasing coz he’s going 2times.. I would though the probability would be 1/2.. please help if am wrong.
@SimonHTT3 жыл бұрын
Good question. The important word in the original question is BOTH. The probability of getting an order on one visit is 1/4 so the probability of getting an order on one visit AND ALSO getting an order on the next visit is even smaller (1/16), so decreasing. Or with a different example, your chances of winning the lottery one weekend is pretty small, but to win it 2 weeks in a row is going to be absolutely tiny. If they had asked what is the probability of getting an order (at least one) then I agree the probability would increase because you are getting 2 opportunities to succeed instead of only 1 (although it's not as simple as 1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2) . Hope this helps.

Question 11 - Should it not be 1.25 more then the normal rate. i.e 5+1.25 = 6.25?
@SimonHTT2 жыл бұрын
It's 1.25 x normal rate, so increasing the normal rate by 25%. That means we need to multiply by 1.25 rather than adding 1.25. The normal rate is £10.80. In my workings the 5 relates to the 5 days Monday to Friday, note the additional 1.25 is only for the weekend, which in this case is just Saturday as she did not work Sunday. Hope that helps.
