Prof Khumalo was such a perfectionist, he made me study Zulu III twice. So I understand "It just won't do" and the value of practice for which I am grateful. Imagine his patience, and the pain I caused to his finely tuned ears, trying to teach beautiful isiZulu to a tone impoverished white boy. On many occasions, my Mom and I used to go to the Massed Choirs and see him conducting. Tears every time we did. I was so proud that he was my teacher (as was my Mom). I finally did pass Zulu III the second time around, out of that mix of awe, fear, inspiration and perseverance he had over me. Thank you for sharing this with us who have ended up in the diaspora. It was moving to hear his family recall many of his traits, which I recall so clearly from those days on the late '90s in a small lecture room in Senate House basement, not family but still family nonetheless. It reminds me of how truly privileged I was to have sat opposite him at a mere arm's length for two years hearing his tenor near falsetto voice (sometimes even singing for us), his hand gestures, turns of phrase and wit. Thinking about it now, I should have asked him many, many more questions. Siyabonga uProfesa. Ilanga lishonile.

Rest in peace Papa Jimmy and Mama Rose. I was fortunate to have attended Mamellong Nqabeni during your tenure but also knew you through my father who was also a musician. Both of you were formidable in the East Rand. May You and Mama's Souls Rest in Peace.
