This is exactly how I am. I feel compassion for people, and I, personally, CANNOT and will not sell to someone who obviously can't afford it. Or, put that person (family) into a debt so that I, or the corporation, can benefit from the up-sale. And yes, how I associate with people, they are grateful of how you treated them and will always remember you. Thank you for your videos.

I’m just starting school to go into Mortuary Science. Coming across your youtube page has helped me so incredibly much, especially this video knowing that me wanting to go into this vocation (& having wanted too for a very long time!) this is how I want to serve the families of deceased loved ones. Having lost loved ones myself knowing how well we were treated by the specific funeral homes we’ve gone through has brought our family back to them because of their service. Thank you for helping me see that there are more peopled who like myself want to be able to serve families like this!

I applaud your ethics on the sales of caskets. The firm I first worked for was a family run business that had been in business since 1923 and was now run by a father and his son. One of the first things we would address after we got all the vitals that were needed for the certificate we would ascertain what kind of funds they had to spend as we were never willing to allow them to spend more than they had. This would help families and also the Mortuary to avoid bad debts. Another firm I worked for years later was part of a independent chain and they would give bonuses for selling coppers and bronze units = and a couple of the other directors would constantly try and up sale to get the bonus, and the end result 70% of the time was a collection mess.

I'm glad I found your video 🌻 I have an interview tomorrow with a funeral home for a pre-need sales position and, while I like the idea of helping people, words like "incentive" started coming up and left me feeling icky, like I should cancel my interview and look for something else, because I don't want to "sell" things to people, I want to provide a service that's going to make a difference. I'm not sure what to expect from this company, as it's not family-owned, but I do think that it's worth a try and that I could be a perfect fit for the position.

Great advice and video. Be careful with the appearance piece. It’s not that they have or don’t have money. It’s often what is important to that family. Example: I make six-figures and don’t wear designer clothes, because I don’t care about that. Though I swipe my card and don’t look at the price tag. You should ALWAYS be Top-Down Selling. Offer every option to every family, every time! Keep up the great service!

Hi Lauren...good video:).....touchy subject for some people....hey you're in a business that provides a service that people need...that service is a necessity in life for most of us at one point or another...whether we like it or not there are elements of a funeral that we simply must have that you provide...ie...embalming for the visitation...casket...vault ...grave. .etc....so to a point you have to be a salesman to promote your firm and the services you offer....your approach is good....give families their quiet private time and they'll know what they want and dont want or need.....many people in our area are doing away with visitations and other traditional items associated with funerals to cut costs....so in a way our funeral homes have to go that extra step to keep the trust and loyalty of families they serve....a few have had to close.....many more options today.......a full traditional here can be as high as 10 to 15,000.00......so yes those types are becoming more scarce in our area......keep doing things with the compassion and approach you take and you'll be fine.....I would certainly find no difficulty in dealing with a director like yourself:)

What are your thoughts on funeral homes and death midwives cooperating in conjunction to provide services like home funeral to families that absolutely refuse to let their loved one be handled by a stranger? Are there opinions within mainstream funeral homes that prevent this cooperation? Do you think your funeral home would ever be open to hiring a death midwives or end-of-life doulas for future service?

Great informative video. I have a question. If a person prepay their funeral, and then don't pass for years, obviously prices go up every day due to inflation and cost of living. So since the deceased already paid for everything, does the funeral home charge the family the difference in cost that is now owed. Or is the price locked in??
@jimwarnow67716 жыл бұрын
Most "funded" preneed funerals have the prices set in stone. If the funeral home's service fee increases or casket prices go up, they are obligated to provide services at the amount of the contract that was paid for at the time it was done. Some pre-need's will also include cemetery costs such as the opening and the closing of the grave and those are supposed to be set in stone also. The only fees that I am aware of that are not included in a fully funded pre-need is the filing cost for the death cert and the burial permit, and any fees relating to published obits. Some will claim that all costs are included when paid in full, but I have not found that to be the case most of the time in regards to the extra out of pocket fees.

In preplanning, does one want to first call their life insurance company or prospective funeral director to see if their policy allows them to use part of the policy for their funeral?

Hey Lauren, I know this video is 2 years old, so I don`t know if you will get an alert that someone just posted here. I worked in sales and marketing, for much of my career in the company I work for. 4 years ago, I was promoted to our Consumer Affairs Team. Before I start, your friend Kari Northy recommended your channel to me. Fortunately, the upells we were required to do on the job, were known as soft upsells. For example, Mr.s Jones, since you are so interested in our offer today, for only 10 dollars more, you can add this to your order. I could not imagine, trying to sell a fancy casket to a family at their most vulnerable time in there life. They are stricken with grief, and mourning the loss of a loved one. That to me, is taking advantage of someone at the worst time ever. I`m so glad you were honest, and are not required to upsell where you are employed. Let's be honest here, to upsell a family purchasing a casket, is money being put into the ground, never to be seen again. You might as well dig a hole in the ground, and take your hard earned paycheck and bury it. There was an expos`e done by CBS news, that showed how funeral homes upsell, and upsell to grieving families. That was infuriating to put it mildly. Kari Northy addressed that news segment, and made it known, that is not how family operated funeral homes work. Thank you for all you do Lauren!!

I have a whole list of questions for you. Do you get upset if a family want to buy a casket from an online source? If I wanted to preplan what I want how is that viewed by a funeral home or director? I want to be buried my wife wants to be creamatied and I would like her ashes put in the headstone or something like that, is that possible? I have many more questions but let's start there. Thanks in advance.

When my parents went to make pre-arrangements, the funeral home sales person tried their best to upsell under pressure and overcharge (one item appeared twice on the quote) my parents wanted the cheapest, no viewing, cremation, no casket, that at one point my parents got angry, got up and went across town to a competitor. They could have afforded a traditional funeral. About the no viewing, they didn't want to bother anyone. How silly. Personally I felt cheated, didn't get to say a final goodbye on a one on one level (face to face).
@Danielle333844 жыл бұрын
I would think the better way of addressing a family is not looking at their clothes or cars ect...but flat out asking them what their budget may be. It should be about the family’s wishes not the business. To be completely honest people should understand that a funeral does not and cannot equal the amount of love they have for their loved one. Yes it’s a business like anything else but the respect of the people is what will bring them more business, not the costs. The main problem in the funeral business is by far their lack of regulations. Policies and costs are so fluctuated and it shouldn’t be. It’s like anything else in this world of money, if you can profit off of something that’s in demand, they’ll always be someone out there pushing for more.

You should train the people At wojicks funeral home they didn’t care if you didn’t have money this is what I had to go through for my dad. Can o set up a payment plan? No we need a he money all in one payment. For every 2 days you’re fathers body is in the morgue there will be 50 extra dollars added to your bill. This is in Canada btw they would not cremate him right away it took a month for them to cremate him. I could not grieve for him properly because I had to figure a way to pay for him. I ended up taking his ashes home like he wanted and to have in scattered in the spring. But it was hell just to get him where he is now it’s not right.
