Sawyer, 200 thousand is literally nothing. That's roughly how much Indonesian has to pay when we break the law too. Helmets are a must, it's a safety requirement.

let me clarified something..... ( im from indonesia and i do lived in bali times to times). foreigner can drive motor bike and cars, but you guys need the appropriate license car license wouldn't work as motor bike and vice versa. NOT Wearing helmets or not waring the appropriate helmets is a crime. if u get caught doing those stuff and the police ask for bribe just point ur camera and start recording and tell them u will send this video to the KPK ( which is the indonesian anti corruption orginazation ) other then that ASK THEM TO WRITE A TICKET, and pay the em legaly. Enjoy bali.... cheers

Thing is is that every country has its ups and downs.. and sure these police officers may have done something that you might not like or agree, but it is stated in the Indonesian law that you HAVE to own an Indonesia driver license in order to use a motor cycle (new law) due to the increasing number of motor cycle accidents caused by tourists.

Louis, thank you for including Sawyer's account of him being extorted by the local police in this video. Exposing acts of corruption is necessary for something to be done about it. I'm a local from Jakarta myself, but as many of my fellow Indonesians and third-world country viewers have pointed out, this is (tragically) a common occurrence where we're from. Mind you though, Sawyer was violating our traffic law which requires motorcyclists to use helmets (the maximum fine for this is Rp250,000) and obtain a local license for motorcycles (there is a procedure for this in Bali which will grant tourists a license for 30 days). The police officer, however, was extorting him by demanding that he pay on the spot - which is illegal as the police may only write you up a ticket (a blue ticket if you admit to wrongdoing and want to pay the fine through a bank, a red one if you want to dispute the incident in court). The fact that the officer fined Sawyer with the maximum amount and proceeded to take Rp200,000 from his wallet, proved that this was just extortion. Bali and Indonesia as a whole is a beautiful place filled with very friendly and hospitable people. I'm sorry this had to happen on your second visit here (I recall you've visited here before when you were younger). Corruption is rampant because of the poor remuneration of our state employees and police, which is sad, but the nation is working to fix this we assure you. I hope the fond memories both you and Sawyer form here will outweigh this incident. That said, welcome to Indonesia, have fun and humor us by putting on a helmet.

Dear Sawyer, idk if you'll read this but that is something that also happens and is very common in africa, it's true that you sorta broke the rules by not wearing the helmet and all that and you could get into some trouble because of it but for the most part police in countries like that have the upper hand and they decide what to do based on what they feel like doing. It's like when you're a kid and your sibling does something you know they'll get into trouble for if your parents find out so you tell them to do something for you or give you something in exchange for your silence, that's just how it goes and they get away with it because it's completely off record. Moral of the story is that countries like those have different rules from those you might be used to and they work differently so you mostly have to deal with it as best as you can. Hope it helps mate ;)

it's actually talked about all over online if you don't have say an international license bla bla not wearing helmet in the more touristy areas if they catch you or see you're a tourist they'll pull you over and try to get whatever they can off you just funny they didn't at least do a little research on that :\ you can actually apply for a balinese license too for 20~$ i believe. that would ensure 0 problems with the police once they see it
