The value of non-business side projects

Although I do have a broad goal in mind, I am writing a Trivia Management app completely in my free time. It keeps growing on what actually it will do, but for the most part, I am making it because I spent awhile trying to find free, or even just cheap Trivia (or questions in general I suppose) administration software for a group setting. Essentially, its meant to be able to create entire trivia games, and you have a proctor administer questions to users who joined in on the trivia game, all in real time. If you've ever been to a bar or something that has trivia night, they usually do it on big TV, and you have a piece of hardware that you have to press a button to answer the questions, however the place that runs the games, generally don't have much say in what questions are asked. This is a way to actually plan, create, and administer the game entirely.

Lately, when we open Coursera's website, in Syria we get this: "We are sorry, but due to OFAC restrictions, learners in your country are not allowed to access the platform." What a shame!! LEARNERS ARE NOT ALLOWED to access...

I reached out to Coursera about this and they can't do anything unfortunately. They are a U.S. company bound by U.S. law which prevents them due to sanctions. Here's some more information from them: learner.coursera.help/hc/en-us/articles/208280116-International-restrictions

Thank you so much to take the effort and do that, I really appreciate it. We get used to these kind of stuff in our communities, so we may use Tor Browser, or Psiphon, but we aren't able to get the certificates. I just want people to know what we face some times while learning. You know, even open source project like docker restrict us, see this: github.com/docker/hub-feedback/issues/369 But we also manage to make or figure out some workaround solutions to use it ;)

Really interesting! As one who loves creating side-projects I completely agree. Also, as a freelancer, the side project could go viral and be used as advertisement for your business (happen to me once or twice).

I can see this being modified and further tooled to be used to input data from research on organisms to do an extreme naive prediction model. i.e. coral growths, bacteria growths, fungus growths.

(Fredrik here) Usually I just type any words I can associate with whatever problem I have into google, and the search engine is powerful enough that it can find something on stackoverflow or github that can help me.

@@PixlingWorld I see. Just to be sure I got you correctly, do you like ask the search engine a question e.g 'What is ESNext Pipeline Operator? ' or you literally type in words related to your question e.g 'ESNext Pipeline Operator' ??

@@bestibitoyerotimi9798 Dont forget that you can also do advance search in google, using logical operatiors for example (AND, OR, NOT) to refine a search but most of the time is not necessary
