From a Korean-American, I am proud of my Chinese and Vietnamese brothers. You both have sovereign countries that are independent of the West. China is full on at the same level of SKorea and Japan and America economically and is just as prosperous now. Vietnam will be there soon. Neither China nor Vietnam have foreign troops and bases on their soil. How could you not but be proud of your people, heritage and culture? BRAVO! I hope one day SKorea can be a sovereign nation.

Thanks David and Andrew for giving me the chance to join in on these important conversations! Another thing I’d recommend is to reallocate your social media consumption: follow people who make you feel more proud. If you like makeup, follow the Asian makeup artists. Find those people who are proud and that will rub off on you. If people make you feel bad about your heritage, that says more about them than yourself. I wouldn’t choose to be anything other than Chinese American. Each visit to China is some of the best time of my life and I could not have that if my parents weren’t from there. Protect your energy and live your best life as who you are ❤

Communism & socialism are only dirty words in USA because the establishment knows how to take control of narratives. Communism is nothing but economic democracy, whereas apitalism is economic oligarchy. If you love political democracy wby would you oppose economic democracy? The phrase love the people & hate the gov more aptly applies to the USA. The dodgy stuff US establishment does around the world while not looking after the needs of Americans... Have you ever wondered how CPC won the war against US-backed KMT? It's because of the support of the have nots - the majority of Chinese population. China may have a long rich tradition & greatness in the past, but most of us wouldn't have been able to enjoy any of it as plebs. CPC method is no worse than Tiger Parenting at a national scale, & considering its for the plebs and not some hereditary royalty, it's a lot better than before for most people. The blend of learning from the West - Marxism'a concept of equality, the scientific methods, even market economy to some extent - blended with learnings from Chinese history enabled a rapid improvement to most people's lives that's uncommon amongst nations - these are qualities to be proud of. There's a concept in marketing called anchoring - what comes first isiur reference point. That's why US go on the offensive, aggressively label what's "good" or "bad" without evidence or nuances. Their framing limits your perspective & force you to constantly defend yourself against their irrational accusations. Once you accept their framing you have lost your own agency & autonomy.

To me pride comes from still having pride about the culture you practice. I am a mix of Chinese Korean Mexican and European but I feel more pride when I share my Chinese and Korean culture with others. My Mexican culture I am still working on but the bulk of my pride comes from owning my Asian roots. Maybe this is easier because how I grew up into a martial arts family, but I have enough pride to say I am proud to have both Chinese and Korean roots. I’m mixed so I have to give love to each piece of the pie. My Asian side just shows the most. Much love to all you guys! And have pride even if it’s the small things or the big things like Lunar New Year coming up. I’m really excited for Year of Dragon so let’s get it! 🙌

I’m born Chinese and I’m gonna always be proud of being Chinese, more specifically being proud of being Chinese American. To me what makes me proud of being Chinese is because of our good food, rich history, famous historical innovations, success/progress that China had accomplished this past decade and China’s rich culture/heritage (that heavily influenced the culture and custom of most other Asian nations). China’s soft power maybe weak now, but someday it will be just as powerful as Korea and Japan’s soft power, as the nation become even more developed. Personally, most people in general should be proud of their own culture/ heritage and nationality that they’re born into.

As a Chinese living in the UK, I remember in my teens, I also went through a bit of identity crisis for the very same reasons as shown in that post. But now that I’m older, I’ve finally learned to appreciate my own culture. I think it’s important to separate culture from politics and nationalism. While personally I do have my fair share of disagreements with the CCP, does that mean I’ve to dislike my fellow mainlanders or anything that’re associated with China? Well ofc no, political asides there’s actually a lot to like about China and its cultures…ie. history, foods, scenery, hospitality of the locals, infrastructures in big cities…etc. I’ve recently just finished watching Chang’an 2023, and I couldn’t be prouder for being a Chinese.

“Separate culture from politics or people from the government” is BS. The anti-China politician in the US and UK who promote war against China is literally calling to nuke and consequently genocide Chinese people. Remember in the Korean war, Douglas McArthur was so desperate and wanted to nuke China. Communist Party of China (CPC) is great. CPC approval rating is 95%. I have noticed that the Taiwanese owned businesses are much friendlier than regular Chinese likely due to the Japanese influence, as David says. Just take boba shops for instance. I can instantly tell which ones are Taiwanese owned, and which are Mainland simply by how we are greeted upon entering. The staff doesn't necessarily have to be Taiwanese themselves, but they are likely trained in that style to treat customers in a more friendly demeanor.

I think education is important to shift the narrative. If people have disdain for the CCP, they have to recognize that the Chinese people are the ones who suffer the most from the government policy. I would equate it to the international community who attacked the citizens of the US or UK for Trump or Brexit - things that most regular people had no involvement in, but they still get viewed a certain way by other people. In the US, there's always been a particular group of people that were feared or hated, whether you talk about the Irish, Italian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, and now it seems that Chinese are at the front of people's minds after Covid and Geopolitics, but this time will pass too. For the moment, doing your part to help people who are ignorant to understand will help this current wave pass faster.

Political issues aside, look at Xi Jinping….. he looks like his relative just died or something everytime he appears. And this scaracity mindset is killing the joy from Chinese…….. a large part is from China‘s past political and civil turmoil

And I don't think Dongbei people are jovial and light-hearted at all. In fact some of the harshest comments I've read against South Chinese and South China minorities on Chinese discussion forums came from them. Instead I think the Cantonese people that I've interacted with (not the ones from Hong Kong though but mainland and oversea Cantonese) tend to be rather jovial.

Why aren't you proud, if you are looking for recognition from the west, you can keep on waiting. It doesn't matter you are pro China or not, American Chinese or off the boat, if China is not a strong and powerful and highly developed country, you don't get no respect.

This is a naive discussion, back in the day when Japanese were threat to number 1 strong country, no amount of kawaii and samurai was cool, and if Korea today is as strong as China and rival number 1 strong country, no amount of Kpop would make them cool. If China today is run by Taiwanese, Taiwanese would be uncool overnight. Back in the day before China was strong, Chinese food or Chinese thing were cool and gets mentioned in TV shows like Friends. Chinese stuff gets mentioned in a negative light starting from Suits.

Exactly that girl maybe does not understand how this game is. I was a kid when all the anti japan hate over cars and electronics was going and it proved to me at the time that the Americans in general and the government in particular are bad losers and not as impressive as they want to make others believe. Manga and Anime was around and did not help at all. Japan then signed a deal to basically surrender to the american regime a second time and made their economy tank and with time they became "cool" again. Not going to happen with china because the communists have fought the american attempts to dominate the region since their inception and have been quite successful at it unlike the Japanese. As for korea they better spare the k-pop bs the part of korea that is not under US control is constantly being demonized for years. I also remember back in the 80´s even after all barbarities that they did to vietnam the movies were trying to portray that vietnam was the bad guys because they had american POWs. All lies yet dozens of movies from Chuck norris MIA to Stalone Rambo planted that idea in the head of many. Over time they thought that they could use Vietnam against china hence they became "nice" again.

Chinese people have to be proud of themselves because China is the only country that was dominant for 2,000 years without colonizing other nations and also rose from ruins without having to steal/colonized from other nations like all western nations that had to do that to be rich. These western nations also became powerful because of utilizing China's invention of gunpowder, without which each and every western nation would be just as weak as other (African or south-east Asian) nations. But after becoming powerful with Chinese' inventions, these nations will keep on using propaganda and lies to diminish China's and Chinese' achievements because these people will never admit that whatever they could achieve was due to that single nation's contribution.

I will try to address the big elephant in the room again without trying to ruffle too many feathers. If you are ethnically Japanese or Korean, it is easy to support both countries as most the their values are consistent with each other. However, if you are ethnically Chinese, supporting both is not logically congruent. Therefore. there is a huge internal conflict in supporting one's ethnic homeland China, vs your adopted homeland. China is seen as the biggest threat to the international world order today. An international world order that has provided us with a pretty good life (generally speaking) with the absence of major conflicts that threaten our way of life. When your 2 homeland countries are at odds to this extent, I believe it's only a matter of time before you are forced to choose a side. I believe it is up to every ethnic Chinese to educate themselves rather than running from the issues. Do you stand for the current world order (which we have grown up in) or do you feel that China's world order would be a better world to live in?

Many of the cultural “issues” are shared with other East Asian countries and in my opinion have been the reason for the relative success of immigrants and their descendants. Every immigrant group in the U.S. had to make cultural adjustments and sometimes such adjustments result in greater social dysfunction and worse life outcomes. By conflating the government of the PRC with ChIna the nation and its people, we reward the Communist dictatorship in their attempt to alienate Chinese people from their neighbors and the rest of the world. Much of the soft power deficit is the direct result of the censorship and indoctrination carried out by the CCP. Those that hate Chinese people as a group are helping the Communists in Beijing. We should also not let the hatred from those netizens brainwashed by the CCP affect our view of Chinese people.

I'm going to say something about the credit card thing vs cash only. I think it varies from neighborhood by neighborhood. Often times when I see cash only places, it's typically in Asian spots that are less affluent or at the edge of where the more affluent community is. And the tradeoffs are actually in favor of cash only over credit cards. Additionally, I'm also sure a lot of cash only places probably do tax evasion to some level. So even in places that makes more sense for the business to use credit cards, it might not make as much sense for the fry cooks and waiters as they will have to report their taxes correctly. Look, in general, I am against anything illegal. But I am not going to pretend that this isn't a factor in the financial success of Asian communities

Most the world have adapted or adopted many Western ways/culture. President Xi is probably the most perceptive of most or all people I know when he says China's system is Socialism with Chinese Characteristics. Chinese Characteristics is a very very real thing. They don't need to hear "I love you" to KNOW they love you. They don't need to show affection to know that deep inside they'd give their lives for you.
