@Clinical Depression I hear what you're saying but I don't think it's really a fair comparison. You have to remember that a lot of Kojima's source inspiration is from films, anime, much of which from the 1980s era, as well as the fact he is Japanese. I think what looks like 'pretentiousness' is actually just intentionally over-dramatic themes. So his stories take themselves overly serious, but he then implements things on the side to show you that HE doesn't. For example, all the toilet humor scattered throughout his games. I genuinely think Kojima is more self aware than people give him credit for. The fact that people even choose the art forms that you mentioned to compare him with is a compliment to his work.
@mcscorn5 жыл бұрын
@Clinical Depression I'm sorry man but I think you're being way too harsh to call it pretentious garbage. like sure if you were to read the scripts alone, they're not exactly easy reading (they can really drag on and over-complicate concepts that are really not that complicated), but when tied together with the amount of world building, lore, film/book references, the emotional themes and messages he tries to convey, he's one of the best in the industry at doing that in the AAA scene, at least. Not the best writer (story teller), but one of the best 'directors' for sure. I mean nobody has to agree with that, but to say any of his games are garbage is a bit much.

"Kojima, what a hack' -Lawrence Sonntag, 2019
@loneronin68135 жыл бұрын
Kojima is talented in many areas, but in my opinion, sometimes he comes across as a bit ham-fisted with some of his messages and he sometimes only ends up belaboring the point given that certain points have been covered already. (The "likes" for example.) I will admit that his take on the, "War is Hell," themes of some of the Metal Gear games are surprisingly introspective and unique, and his examination of what a hero is during times of war in Snake Eater was pretty thought-provoking in regards to both Snake and the original Boss. All of that being said, he has many strengths and he is creative and bold. He is willing to put everything on the line for the sake of his work, and it seems like he is one of the few as of late. I may not like everything he does, but I don't consider him to be a hack. I know the statement made in the video was a joke, but I feel that Kojima isn't the godsend of gaming that some seem to see him as. He is still one of the greats in many areas of game creation and I respect and admire his work and accomplishments, but he isn't the be-all-end-all.

You mean the next MGS? Feature length cutscenes with 15 mins of gameplay inbetween just to keep you interested long enough to get into another feature length cutscene? Then you realize that kojima should make movies, not games, since gameplay seems to be the last thing he wants to put into his games?
@JTKSK5 жыл бұрын
@@reptiliancow Amen. There is no reason this game should be a game instead of a movie or a TV series. The core gameplay loop is so incredibly bland

@@JTKSK God forbid anyone try to make a new or blended form of media that doesn't fit into an already defined category. Seriously though... every turn I see people complaining about this not being enough of a game, or some such nonsense. Been hearing it for ages; I remember having an identical debate over Last of Us when it came out. As if video game evolution, media evolution, isn't permitted. Should we have left gaming at Pac Man? Should we have left movies at silent films? In fact, who needs movies? We've got books! That's the only media we need! Why grow, why change, why venture into new territory! Just shout a story at me! Traveling bards passing oral tradition are all we need! If you want to run and gun, there are games out there for you. If you want a more fully interactive experience, there are games out there for you. This is another step, another development, another innovation. The alternative is creative stagnation. I agree with GojiraRising. I think it's why Kojima ended up working with Del Toro and Refn to a degree here. They emulate a lot of the qualities he has as an artist, though Del Toro pulls he films off with minimal backlash from the public. He just makes good stuff. Refn makes good movies, but like Kojima's games are so strange and so full of allegories, that they're really only for a cerain audience. And that can come off as pompous, and at the same time, genius. Which is why I'm on the fence about this game. I love Kojima's work, from the MG series, to Policenauts and Snatcher, but this one might too much even for me. I just don't know. Lol.
