Here's how I do it : 1. New game appers. 2. Check YT to see gameplay to figure out if it is any good. If it is then: 3. Pirate it. 4. Play and figure out if I ACTUALLY like it, if I do, then keep playing it. 5. A few months/a year later Steam has it on sale and if I still have good memories about that game, then I will buy it and probabbly play it again. And so, I won't accidentally spend money on a crap game just because i didn't know better. How about you guys ?

Japan is a really good example to add to what you guys said about piracy being based around factors like income, and availability. Japan's entertainment industry "suffers" heavily from what is known as the Galapagos Effect. It's basically where a culture exists outside of the influence of the rest of the world, and certain cultural differences crop that are unique to that location. Up until WW2 Japan had very little contact with the economies of Europe and America; therefore its established its own unique stance on pricing, and later piracy. For example the average 24-26 episode anime costs around $50 in the US. These are either sold in a complete collection, or split in two parts. In Japan however, most 24-26 episode shows are split up into 4 episode pieces, with each part costing about 50-60 USD. That means your average Cowboy Bebop, or GITS cost around 300 bucks. With pricing like this would think piracy would run rampant through Japan, yet their piracy levels are relatively low. Actually American piracy of anime and games does more damage to Japan than, the Japanese themselves. This is why Japanese companies are so hesitant to sell there products in the US and Europe, because they'd only make a faction of the money the can make domestically. Just a little insight into weirdness of Japan's economic situation.
@Thief1649 жыл бұрын
walrusking14 And only recently have they tried to put a foot across the line again and saw the results of making their entertainment easier for us to access. Take the Light Novel of Sword Art Online as an example, when it was put on shelves, it was the highest selling thing B&N had at the time and the slow but sudden influx of Visual Novels that showed up because people were wanting them. It was surprising to see a legal version of Steins;Gate was being sold and seeing Clannad's kickstarter being beyond successful. The only things in the way for anime is licensing laws and how vague it is and region locking. "Oh hey this thing is subbed in Engli- wait can't watch it, it's been region locked for NA only because they don't have the EU license." In an odd way, piracy actually helped their entertainment industry grow because before any of this showed up there were very little ways for other countries to watch it. Before Simulcasting there were fansub groups (which are still active) and before that were the VHS tapes.
@themightyboo70209 жыл бұрын
very true. japan has such a low crime rate that i doubt there are many pirates. however, such a large amount of people in us/europe use crunchy roll now instead of buying cd's, that i would think the piracy rate is much lower than what it probably was in the late 90s/ early 2000's.

They also happen to be the same devs who are told by their shareholders to enforce more drm to stop people like you. so instead show them their is a problem with the companies actions not just piracy in general, to fix the problem.

Pirating games is allowed *ONLY* in a few situations: 1) Testing a game to know the optimization and if your pc can handle it 2) Making sure the game ain't broken like AC Unity, Battlefield 4,...... 3) If the games in your country are worth ALOT more than it is. Games in some countries reach 1000 [insert currency] Other than that, you *MUSTN'T' pirate a game unless you're a thief from the beginning and like stealing people's extremely hard work, especially indie devs.

lordkiff32 "Demo"? What demo? These developers don't release demos any more. Also, recommended specs don't help you at all, because sometimes the game is overselling itself (Such as, in Payday 2, Nvidia recommended the lowest settings because my PC couldn't handle it, but I still have it cranked up to high settings with AA on, and I still manage the same amount of FPS), or if you don't know a lot about computers.

As Adam brought up with us Aussies, we gypped on EVERYTHING digital. All our games are $99 digital, our movies and stuff are between $12 and $20+ just for the standard quality and even more for HD. Our government thinks that it is fair to put GST on non physical items and content treating it as if it was physical and required an extra cost to be added as it does to compensate for the price of getting it shipped etc. They also don't convert the currency correctly for subscription based services, they use a set ratio from god knows when and dont ever compensate for the exchange rate changing.
@кяуртіс9 жыл бұрын
On the subject of why pirate. I personaly only pirate games that I am iffy about an unsure if I will enjoy, if I happen to enjoy it and especially if it has an online element to it I will go out and buy it. Buying games on PC without prior experience with them is very risky especially if you are buying a physical copy. Yes they are 20 bucks cheaper BUT what if they don't run on your pc, you don't like it or hell your pc shits itself and you need some money to fix it that is where the issues start because you can't return or trade in PC games and most of the time if not 99% of the time the place of purchase will refuse to give you a refund no matter what even if it is steam or origin.
@dunhillsupramk39 жыл бұрын
maybe try talking to your government, maybe they are just a bunch of old men that don't even know what these games are about and these games got age limits and the whole idea of a video game confuse them so educate them.... they banned GTA5 in stores but yet in the same store 50 Shades of gray was allowed? (which actually promotes domestic violence)
@кяуртіс9 жыл бұрын
rapier332 It is nowadays but gst is supposed to be added to compensate for import of a product from overseas that we otherwise wouldn't have hense the name Goods and Service Tax. You are paying someone to post, recieve and process the goods when the arrive here BUT the government god greedy and made companies put it on non physical items such as digitally distributed games. Was it not for this gross taxation of products we would be paying $60 for games everywhere digital AND physical.

Our pricing is a joke, we are stuck in an era when everything used to be priced highly and was not widely available.

I have a few rules for torrenting games. Read on if you are interested. I would like to hear your guys' rules! 1. I will torrent a game if I have already bought it on consoles. Examples from the past have been Borderlands 2 (I bought the game and all DLC on PS3 before I was a PC gamer), GTA V (bought it for PS3 and PS4), and if Destiny ever comes to consoles. 2. I will torrent a game and give myself an hour to play it, sort of like a demo. Games don't really release demos nowadays, and if they do I don't trust that it represents the actual game. I will torrent a game and play it for around an hour, if I like it a lot I will buy it, if I like it a little I will wait for a steam sale, and if I don't like it I will just delete it. An example is Dying Light, I didn't have high hopes but was curious, got about 45 minutes in, I really liked it, and then bought it off steam. 3. If I'm not sure my computer can handle it. Similar to playing a demo of a game, but for a different purpose. I don't have the strongest computer in the world, and it really sucks to buy a game and find out that the port is complete shit. I bought CoD Ghosts because, like many, I thought it looked like a good game. I wanted $60 on a game that almost no one could get to run well on PC. Conclusion: As a full time college student living off federal aid and government loans, I can only afford a few full priced games a year. I want to make sure I am spending my money well. If you have the money to go out and spend $200+ on videogames a year more power to you, but I became a PC gamer so I could get many games for cheap off of steam, and if I don't want to wait for a sale at least this way I can judge a game's quality myself.

Chewey989 I bought a blue car, but then decided I wanted the exact same car, but in red. I walked onto the lot and stole it. When the cop pulled me over to arrest me, I told him I just wanted to test-drive the red one, to see if I liked it. I didn't think I needed to ask permission to test-drive it, even though I was getting the full car, and no one was with me to make sure it was just a quick demo-ride. See, I wasn't sure though if I could handle the engine, the car was pretty powerful, and I just wanted to make sure I could handle it. Look, in all reality I don't care about piracy that much, but none of your reasons hold much water, at least legally. Personally, I say pirate away, but don't try and justify it so you can feel better about it.

Games more than 60$? The digital version of GTA V costs 69.99€ in Ireland. I really don't get this. There is no store that you need to pay to accept your game, there is no logistics cost, no cost to produce the packaging (cover + box), no cost to press the disc - why are digital games the same exact price as a physical copy? In Australia They charge a lot more for some things for the sake of being imports. I have to say the price difference is redicilious. I'll use a couple of examples. In Australia the main store that people use to buy DvD's and some times games is a store called JB-Hi-Fi (if not atJB for games then EB games, but the price is roughly the same) I'll use Dragonball Z as an example as Adam mentioned it. www.jbhifi.com.au/movies-tv-shows/movies-tv-shows-on-sale/tv-anime/dragon-ball-z-remastered-uncut-season-1/185124/ The price mentioned here is $56.99 (or $43.68 US) I don't know any other store aside Walmart in America unfortunally but looking on their website, they sell the exact same DVD collection www.walmart.com/ip/Dragon-Ball-Z-Season-1-Vegeta-Saga-Uncut-Widescreen/5544391 Here is $19.96 (or $26.04 AUS) Now I know they need to make some sort of profit but come on that's almost double the price. Games are almost the same instance here. NOW I should also mention it's also a lot harder for Australians to get access to things. That is the reason Australia is the number one pirater in the world

For instance, my friends won't shut the fuck up about Xenoverse, so a generous friend named Nos Team is going to get the game for me. Likewise, I wasn't interested at all in Dead Island: Riptide, but sheer masochistic curiosity had me needing to know just how shit it was in comparison to the first trainwreck. Walking Dead: Survival Instinct was another one. The fact that Riptide was actually fun in it's own way meant I was seriously tempted to buy it, but didn't quite reach that point.
@MrSticks21909 жыл бұрын
Sounds to me like you're trying to justify your piracy. Everyone has their own opinion, and I'm not trying to start anything, but you and I will just have to agree to disagree. My opinion (not that you asked) is that your curiosity of, "How bad is this game?" or ",I guess I should try it because my friends like it," doesn't make it okay to steal it. To make an analogy, if I was curious about a car I couldn't just steal the keys or hotwire it and drive it around to see if it handled well and had good gas mileage and then just keep it. I would have to take a test drive (much like playing a game demo), talk to the dealer and other car owners (like looking at reviews or forums or asking friends) or just purchase the vehicle and live with that decision (whether it turned out to be good or bad). And once you've got the pirated copy, the only time somebody would buy a legit copy after is if they really, REALLY want to support the developer. Most people go, "Yeah, I could do that because they made a good game, but I already have the game since I pirated it, so ehh...fuck it."
@kaszilla9 жыл бұрын
Mr. Sticks see where you come from, but comparing a car with a game ? pirating is not really stealing, its sharing a game with a million others, for free, if i give a game to somebody for free does that mean they stole it ? i mean its not that the big companies, will eat less for it.... if its a tiny developer i say support him, and i know alot of pirateers donate to the little guy to make sure they keep making games, but for the big guys? those money wolves who charges 70 bucks for a game just for you to pay another 20 bucks every other month so you can actually complete the story ? oh and dont forget about those microtransactions... naah pirate them, make sure they feel it in their pockets, so that they know that that is not the way forward... because if we wont draw a line, where will it end ?
@MrSticks21909 жыл бұрын
I was just using the car thing as an analogy, I know a car is a much more expensive item than a video game, but it was the first thing that came to mind. And I can understand protesting against money-hungry practices like day one DLC and micro-transactions and such by denying a developer profit on their game, but not everybody who pirates has this Robin Hood mentality of steal from the rich, give to the poor (And even if they all did, does that make it okay? That is where a lot of people are divided). Most just pirate because they are on a platform where they can do so fairly easily and save money by doing it. Finally, does pirating the game actually send the message of, "I'm not paying for this because your practices are shitty?" I feel like with some developers it might, but with others they may think, "Oh, well they must like the game because they went to the effort of downloading a pirated copy." I guess it all depends on perspective.
@RingoFreakingStarr9 жыл бұрын
Playing games is a privilege, not a right so to pirate games without the intent to buy them in my book makes you a piece of shit. You know those devs that slaved many man hours to finish that game? Well since you went ahead and enjoyed their game for free, the higher ups are going to have to cut costs because even though they didn't have anything "stolen", they lost a potential sale. So someone is going to get cut or worse there will be wide salary cuts. I just cannot fathom how people justify pirating games. It is so fucking wrong morally and thanks to copyright laws also heavily illegal. I hope one day you make something you are really proud of and gets taken from you right under your nose.
@KingNefiiria9 жыл бұрын
I don't have that same "need" to play a game. When a game comes out that interests me, if I can afford it, and if I think the price matches what the publisher has promised, I'll buy it. Otherwise I'll put it on my wishlist and wait for a sale, or occasionally check back with the site during major holidays to see the sale. I don't pirate games, and I don't feel the need to if a game comes out that I like, even if the publishers are scum. My decision to not purchase a game published under them will not even register on their "we-lost-a-sale-o-meter." So with that in mind, if a game comes out that I like, regardless of who it's published under, I'll buy it if the price matches what I've seen. If not, I'll wait for a sale. Simple as that.

Do I pirate games? Hell yes, as a uni student I don't have the funds to buy ever game I want, sure you could argue that that's just life and you'd be right. But I also buy a lot of games, I pirated mainly to try games I'm not sure if I will enjoy or they are on the shorter side. If I like a game ill buy it, COD:AW I bought, Bf4 i bought it, all the AC's I bought them, telltale games I bought, the list goes on. I understand that pirating is a dick move and it is really bad for indie games but I'd much rather be a dick and try a game than spend $100 every year on indie games that I don't enjoy because the subject matter isn't my thing. In terms of prices in Australia they are quite expensive but we do earn more so its not too bad but to play 50% of AAA games of the year its near impossible. I do have to say if I've ever pirated a game and not bought it and it comes up on a steam sale ill get it, if I hadn't pirated it, i wouldn't have bought it. TL;DR I pirate games Im unsure about and buy games I know Ill like or have tried. Steam sales=easy sales.

I agree with you but watching people in my opinion doesn't give you a fool proof answer. Perfect example, I watched a lot of cod:aw before I bought it, it looked like a tonne of fun but when I bought it I hated it, it was complete bollocks. Same with ghosts, battle block, magika, Gta iv(more of a port problem). I do agree though if I pirate a game it doesn't mean I'm going to buy if I enjoy it but it gives me a far better idea of the game. I wouldn't pirate if demos were still a thing.
@RingoFreakingStarr9 жыл бұрын
Playing games is a privilege, not a right. Please do not even attempt to justify pirating games due to your lack of funds. I like how you do end up buying some of the games you pirate but in my book you should financially compensate devs from all the games you pirate.

I'm 18 and I have never pirated any type of media, I find that I put myself in the shoes of the developer or publisher who I'm 'taking' money from if I were to pirate. Buying everything legally also makes me feel morally good and also gives me a feeling of 'ownership' of said product.

Since Funhaus started I have watched every video, and of all of them so far, I haven't enjoyed the GTA gameplays, that is nothing against the content because I have laughed at some stuff, but it's because of my distaste towards the game. As a person who pirates I can say for AAA games the answer to pirating is simple. Have either really good online content and or mod support. Those are two things you can't do with a pirated game. I buy a lot of games because I'm a competitive gamer. In the case of games like skyrim I buy because of mod support, in my particular case mod support to make the game harder. Games that make me want to pirate them are titles that gate off a lot of content with DLC or pre-order exclusives. Especially pre order content exclusive to different retailers. A pirated version includes all DLC and pre-order content. It's simply less hassle to not pay for those games.

I have a self rule on pirating games: as long as the game is around 20 years old I'll pirate it. I know that nintendo has virtual console but the games are ridiculously over-priced. I never pirate games that are really cheap on steam, this is only because I like the achievements. Anyway, great podcast, love the content of the new channel.
@Noxyba9 жыл бұрын
I pay for about 95% of what I actually play. If I pirate anything at all, it's usually because I have no practical legitimate avenue through which to purchase it (or the game is so old that original developers completely disbanded and the money is just going to someone squatting on the property). If it's worth your time, it's almost definitely worth your money as well. I know I've seen too many good people go under because an otherwise great product flopped financially, so I've done my best to vote with my wallet whenever I can. Piracy as a form of consumer protest is an interesting concept but rarely pans out, I think. There are so many different reasons to pirate--lack of options, lack of money, straight-up greed--and publishers tend to label all pirates with the same brush anyway: content thieves who want something but don't want to pay money for it. If you really want to send a message about a business practice you don't like, or a franchise you don't like, or a publisher you don't like, you send a much stronger and less ambiguous message by not playing the game or that publisher's catalog at all. If you knew about a game and didn't play it, it says pretty unequivocally that you just didn't care enough. You couldn't even be assed. And publishers tend to take that feedback much more seriously than anything pirates say just because they tend to view pirates as distrustworthy to begin with.
