Seeing that the game accepted "ya who" as "yahoo", it seems to accept words phonetically close, so in this case it got "what is" as "walks". Or maybe it was just a bug.

I played this with my friends and the occasion of knowing the answer but the game refusing to understand what we're saying almost made us burn the house down. Although it was also really funny for them to watch my mental degradation.

5:53 I couldn't stop thinking about what the hell happened here, and its actually pretty interesting (to me at least). Firstly, there is a massive problem with the Jeopardy font, which is why Alex spells out WHIP. All of the letters are capitalized in the font, so you can't tell that its WHIP (the acronym) and not the word whip. So the answer here is MUCH better worded as "____ and hits per innings pitched is known as the WHIP stat." Keep in mind that the question for the category must also follow the phrase "Chuck a ___". If you haven't got it already, the question is "What are walks?" which was given by Sean on the episode (i checked the official Jeopardy show archive). So now the question becomes why in God's name did the game give credit to James's insane answer of "What is they're both lying?" This is a weird case of a false positive from the inference engine that the game is using! Essentially there are multiple inputs that produce the same output (a correct answer). The game is using the same style of inference engine that the old Nintendo DS game Brain Age used. If you look up the TAS speedrun of Brain Age you will see that people have found numerous insane inputs that produce a correct output for every question in that game. With this new Jeopardy game there should be numerous nonsense phrases that also produce a correct result. James just got VERY lucky and hit one completely by accident. In the games engine, its stores "they're both lying" and "walks" in essentially the same space. The game is a hot mess though, and they use really, really terrible voice recognition software and also pretty terrible inference software. It seems like the developers didn't want to pay for a license to use more mature software that works incredibly well, and they likely used something open source and fairly old. Or even worse, they may have rolled their own software based on some old white papers.

This is how Jeopardy games always are when the questions are on the show level. It is a difficult trivia show and the point they made at the beginning of cherry picking personal success is true.
