Oh man, thank you for this info -- never heard of him before, and to tell you the truth I don't remember any Motown song where I remembered the bari being prominent -- my favorite instrument in any band. Guess the rhythm section (Jamerson and Johnson) and magic vocals always had my attention. I went to see Tower of Power live for the first time in my life earlier this year, at Yoshi's in Oakland, an intimate place, was blown away by Doc Kupka's solo 2 minute lesson in bari sounds, stunning!

Earl Van Dyke - Keyboards Joe Hunter - Keyboards Johnny Griffith - Keyboards Eddie Willis - Guitarist Joe Messina - Guitarist Robert White - Guitarist William "Benny" Benjamin - Drummer Richard "Pistol" Allen - Bass Uriel Jones - Drums James Jamerson - Bass Bob Babbitt - Bass Jack Ashford - Percussionist Eddie "Bongo" Brown - Percussionist Perhaps a younger generation isn't familiar with these musicians. In 1959, Berry Gordy gathered the best musicians from Detroit's jazz and blues scene. Over a fourteen year period they were the heartbeat of Detroit's Motown Sound "By the end of their phenomenal run, this unheralded group of musicians had played on more number ones hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis and the Beatles combined - which makes them the greatest hit machine in the history of popular music. They called themselves the Funk Brothers." www.standingintheshadowsofmotown.com/funksbio.htm

The opening picture is very interesting as it features The Monitors (who made "Since I Lost You Girl") being backed by members of Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers. The only other song I was familiar with was "Give In, Just Can't Win" by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, but I researched the other songs and found "Crying In The Night" was an unreleased track by The Monitors, "Poor Little Rich Girl" by The Marvelettes and " My Dear Heart" was recorded by Golden World artist Barbara Mercer (who sounded somewhat like Diana Ross). The Funk Brothers often snuck out to Golden World's studio to play on numerous sessions.

Sound effects or foley artistry with overdubbing, reverberation echo chamber effect, was a plus. "Where Did Our Love Go", "Still Waters", "Psychedelic Shack", the Hammond B3 Organ "What's Going On", and of course The Adantes etc., etc., etc. Motown Records was bold enough to use a harpsichord too. Phenomenal!

Hey drummerboy, just did some research and found out he was in his early 40's when he died suddently from a stroke, in April 1969. I was in Vietnam from January to June '69, so never heard any details or even knew until I read Nelson George's book. He came from the big swing bands of the 40's and early 50's, started at Motown in '58. Berry said he was magic, so fabulous they wouldn't record anything without him (and Jamerson) in the early days.

In his book "Where Did All The Love Go," Nelson George said that after a session at the studio one night, Benny left and the next day they were waiting for him for another session, and somebody came in and said he had dropped dead the previous night! Nobody even knew he was sick, although they must have known he was an alcoholic. Nelson said everyone was in shock, he's there one ngiht, and the next day somebody says "He's dead." Think he was in his 30's, but not sure about that.
