As you stated tons of ways to open. This method is good from small amounts of clay under 3 pounds but anything above this there will be issues as the clay will be stronger than your finger. Regardless of size if the Clay isn’t centered this problem will happen. It can happen even after if it’s knocked off center. I will say regardless how one does their opening having support is very important.
