Today we look at the Klein ET310 Circuit Breaker Finder and the 670-6 screwdriver to replace a wall switch in my house.
As far as I can tell the circuit breaker finder seems to work as advertised. It’ll come in handy when getting done those diy projects around the house.
I’m not fully sold on the 670-6 screwdriver. It works but I’m not sure if it’s any better than a regular screwdriver.

I have a Fluke probe. It sends a frequency through the lines and lets you sniff the lines out so you don't accidently hit a wire in the wall when drilling. Great for this too.

We have a CyFi (or is it SyFi) guy in Oz and both of them make me cry. I see so many of the same faults we have in our house that was built in 2021. I also want to properly label the panel. The illegible black sharpie has been pissing me off for years. Got some done without the tool but old age memory is slowing the process down. This tool will get it one in a couple of hours. Biggest decision is what color will I choose for the labels. 🤔

To make the circuit finder even more useful, pick up a screw in adapter that allows you to plug the sending unit into a light socket, you will also need to get a 3 prong to 2 non grounded adapter to do that for the 3 prong sender.

an extra detail on the circuit finder: the sensor is self calibrating. you sweep it over the panel until it zeroes in on one breaker. I have about a 95% first-try record with it. the other 5% involves strange wiring configurations, and one case where something in the house was sending a false signal. (twin breakers being one of those strange configurations.) however, using it, is no guarantee you won't turn off the TV. Mr. Murphy likes to put the TV on the circuit you need to work on.

I have one of these but the receiver has to be calibrated by running the receiver ONCE over all the breakers then run the receiver again across the breakers slowly to detect the correct breaker, it’s not 100% but works most of the time, thanks for all your videos.

@@FunkFPV Nope. Back-stabbing (the spring type) is evil. One or two grades up on the switches and outlets gets you a screw terminal that compresses two plates together, with space for two striped & straight wires. That type is the bomb. No need to form a loop. No worrying about squeezing the wire out when you tighten the screw. Either get that type or make pigtails with wire nuts or Wago lever nuts, but please never wrap one around the screw and backstab the other. I think those tips are enough guidance for you to not need to look at the code.

The difference between an amateur and a professional is how well they hide their screw up. I have personally seen commercial plumbers not connect drain lines between different floors of a building. I did my dumb grunt job and told the plumbers about it. It wasn't discovered until the building was turned over to the customer and they finally used it.

I have one receptacle this circuit breaker finder wasn't able to pinpoint the breaker for, but it's immediately obvious when the transmitter loses power! It beats the heck out of listening for a radio to shut off on the other side of the house or look and see if a lightbulb goes out. Those screwdrivers are handy for spinning the really long device screws in, but they absolutely suck for trying to break the old ones free or do a final tighten on the new ones.

That screwdriver takes about two or three days to master it. It’s all in the wrist. As for your switch, I believe you said your house was built in 1978 then the screws would have all been straight blade instead of Phillips head. So it has been replaced at least once. The circuit tester does work really well, but it WILL lie to you every now and then.

I am not an electrician, but I do own a copy of the NEC-and I will not comment on how many times you triggered me, because I _love, love, love_ your shorts. But I feel obliged to tell you that you didn’t use the circuit breaker finder properly; not even close. If that were one of the older analog tracers, your method would be reasonable. But that is a digital tracer that works completely differently. You need to scan *_ALL_* of the circuit breakers once without stopping, because it stores a map of the signal strengths from that scan; then you scan a second time and only then will it give you an accurate alert. Let the stupid-cheap computer chip in that wand do the magic and make you look like a journeyman electrician! From the ET-310 manual: Power ON the receiver. Before approaching the electrical panel, push the Power On/Off/Reset button once to reset the receiver. Position the receiver so that the sensing tip is oriented perpendicular to the breakers in the panel. Slowly scan all breakers in the panel once, ignoring any audible or visual indications as the receiver is learning the panel. Scan all breakers a second time. When the breaker connected to the circuit with the transmitter is approached, the frequency of the audible beeps will increase. When located, the audible beep will sound continuously, the circuit status indicator will illuminate red, and the green indicator in the sensing tip will turn off, indicating that the correct breaker has been found.

You wimp turning the power off to change a light switch. I change ours with the power on coz the wife will get the insurance. 👍 I won't wire new 230V mains but I will change sockets and switches. That tool would be handy for finding our what my circuits are and labelling them coz the hopeless electrician who wired our new hose didn't label anything. The panel needs to be labelled for that day I make a mistake. 😳 We have 128 power outlets in the house and they are on just two circuits and *all* the lights are on one so if the breaker pops it's very dark at night. I would have liked every second light to be on a different circuit breaker and bugger the cost. Redundancy is a good idea IMO and I wouldn't have minded paying for it.

I just picked up a different brand of the breaker finder yesterday. It kinda worked. It seems induction can jump the signal to other wires, I was getting multiple positives. Maybe if the wiring is professionally done (rather than a hundred year old workshop done by volunteer labor) it would be more consistent? It helped chase a wire, but not all the way to the breaker itself.

this model calibrates itself as you work with it, so it has better odds of zeroing in on the breaker. also, it usually involves an old switch with a flaw in the plastic, but occasionally something hits one hard enough to break it.

@@kenbrown2808 the one I picked up has the calibration button and instructions on how to use it. It says to turn it on, hit calibrate away from the box, touch each breaker for it to calibrate itself, then touch each breaker again for it to show the one. Still got false positives. Testing the wires themselves, there was definitely some induction going on.
