It’s actually really simple. The game treats your health similar to mana. If you don’t have the mana, you can’t cast the spell. Hellfire doesn’t cost life, just deals dmg.

I feel like the current problem with quest is that many of them are basically "win the game" cards Back in Ungoro expansion, almost no1 complained about X quests OP (except Rogue which was win the game) because because none of the quest rewards are as dominant as current quest rewards. Same with combo decks if combo decks are very inconsistent and hard to pull off, almost no1 complains dying to combo because you know how committed. However current combo decks like Rogue and Demon hunters pull it way too fast and way too consistently (if you know how to play deck properly) which makes you feel like they're a BS deck and your only option is Aggro race them down. As a result most decks in the meta right now are either aggro or "win game by turn X" decks I think "win the game by turn X" deserves major nerf so you can go back to having more variety of decks

I am definitely not enjoying this expansion. It doesn't feel like anyone really interacts with the other player anymore. Just about every deck involves doing your own thing without interacting with the other player's play until you've completed your quest and won.

This was literally the reason why Yu-Gi-Oh! Added the extra field slots for extra deck monsters as most decks literally just drew trough all cards and built a board that wasn't beatable (check out stardust quasar dragon). They had to introduce a way to limit the players from playing too many strong monsters so that people actually could play the game as so many duels were decided by who went first, did the person going first brick or could they start their combo and did the opponent have one of about 3 answers to stop the other before they could pop off

@@alejandrom. Uh yeah, that's called aggro, combo, and control. Aggro kills combo faster than it can complete its combo, combo kills control because it can't stop its combo, and control beats aggro by outliving it. Sometimes control has tech cards to disrupt combo, and sometimes combo has anti-aggro cards to outlive aggro. That's a normal meta.

Quest reward Tamsin redirects health costs to your opponent instead of you, but you still need to have enough health to cast the card in the first place, otherwise you can't cast the card at all.

@@warkiller No. You can see it by how he tried to play it first when the opponent had 8 and it didn't work either. The actual interaction is that you pay with health, so you need to have the health to pay with. The payment is then extracted out of you in the form of you taking damage, which instead goes to the opponent - but you still need to have the health to cover the cost in the first place. This sort of "can't suicide with a card that costs health" (important: costs health, rather than "deals damage to you") has been in the game forever, you could see it in certain tavern brawls especially.

That is correct, but I would say counterintuitive. If a card costs 4 HP and you have 4 HP, it seems to me that you have exactly enough to cast it. Sure, doing so might kill you, but so what? Even without protection, that might still be worthwhile if say you are casting Hellfire to kill your opponent and secure a draw. If you only had 3 HP, then sure, that wouldn't be enough to pay the 4 HP casting cost, but this feels unintuitive to me.

@@remyllebeau77 No, that's exactly the point. There are two aspects of the damage process in the game: Taking damage and damage being applied. Those can and are altered by card effects individually. Immune effects interact with the "taking damage" phase and they will entirely prevent the "apply damage" phase from triggering because no damage was ever taken. Tamsin interacts with the "apply damage" phase and changes the target of said damage - but that requires damage to be taken first. Soul Stealer changes the resource to life and you take that damage in the first phase before the target is then changed in the second phase by Tamsin. In the clip you see the interaction between life remaining and health as a resource. HS is setup so that you can't take damage from spells that reduce your pool to zero or lower. If you wouldn't take damage (like from an immune), no damage would be redirected to the opponent. You can see that interaction here: imgur.com/a/xlg613A (Bloodbloom because Soul Stealer is banned in wild but Violet Illusionist/ Malganis is wild only; Hand of Guldan costs more health than available but is castable while immune; casting it causes no damage, thus no damage is redirected).

No offense against PizzaHS but that's not a good clip... that's literally how it's worked forever. There was a tavern brawl where spells cost health instead of mana. It worked exactly like this.

@@LordSturm777 It first does damage to you, then is changed to redirect. And it works like mana. When using health, you have mana equal to your health minus one. So it's like saying "Why shouldn't I be able to illegally cast a spell I don't have enough mana for, as long as that spell gives me the mana needed to cast it?" You can't cast a 1 cost Lightning Bloom with 0 mana and end up with 1 mana. Same thing here.

It's clearly happening in the engine before any subsequent effects that redirect resulting in you healing the damage and dealing it to the opponent. You also can't tell me it's not the same, when the engine absolutely treats them the same and you can see exactly why in these examples. When spending health, you have current health minus one available as "mana." Oh and mana can indeed go into negatives, thanks to overload. Playing 0 mana cards like innervate and lightning bloom when overloaded more than your max mana does not generate mana.

Yeh, I still remember him bitching at chat saying that the pity timer was 20, not 40, and timing out people that disagreed with him. Very friendly. To be honest, I do blame chat in this situation. Never argue with the only person with a microphone.
