Yeah, he's using a heavy garden soil in a pot with bad drainage. Should be watered and allowed to drain in a shower or outdoors. It needs to be in a plastic pot, and then sat inside a nicer pot, makes it easier to move around and repot when the time comes.

Class issue not a generational issue. Gen Z who complain about the cost of living are not the same Gen Z who throw out leftovers. People with too much money in the 1950s or whenever it was you started collecting dust were throwing away food just like they're doing now. People were eating mouldy food out of desperation in poverty back then and are doing it to this day too. You're lumping the complaints of the struggling and the crimes of the ignorant as an issue unique to, and representative of a generation, which based on how long you're implying you've been alive, is something you should have outgrown by now.
