Blue fire is the hottest part of the flame. "Azul" means "blue" in Spanish and Portugese. Azula's fire is blue because she is so good, so powerful, that her fire burns hotter than normal. If you watch carefully, you will notice in some instances in future episodes where she shoots blue fire, and after a moment or two it cools down to a more normal orange-red color. Brilliant animation detail, and an example of the things that make this show so good. Aaaaand she can ALSO use lightning.

What fascinates me is the message in "Return to Omashu" that the Resistance retreat and NOT fight for their city. Sure, they say it's to fight another day, but I feel like it's so rare in media like this to have a resistance do anything less than fighting an oppressive power tooth and nail treated as a good thing. Bumi being treated as a coward until he talks about neutral jing also highlights this - there is value in waiting and assessing a situation, even though action may feel more empowering in the moment. I suppose Thor Ragnarok comes closest to this conclusion, realizing saving the people is more important than saving the place.
@michaelshigetani433

I agree. Taking the time to asses, and in this case; realize that NOT fighting the Fire Nation here; in Omashu ; is the right move. I don't know what Bumi saw that made him decide to wait; but Bumi wouldn't do that for no reason.

I love that Mais Family is giving us a first hint of the deeper nuance of this world. Her Parents are, for all intents and OPurposes, not good people. They are high-ranking Firenation aristocracy and they had no problem enslaving a whole City. And yet, they love and cherish their child and were willing to give up nearly anything for his safe return. These people are never just 'good' or 'bad, there is always depth

I love Azula's trio! Seeing their interactions is really interesting and very telling about Azula's mindset as a villain. All three of them have a very great arc, as you will see! While it's super cool to see Azula and her fighting style since it can be contrasted to Zuko really well, I also love how we see some really badass non-benders kick ass (even against master benders like Katara). In "Return to Omashu" we were also introduced to chi blocking, which temporarily disables someone's bending ability. Really cool. Also, it's just so cool how many amazing women and girl fighters are in this show. Especially because even though they're all amazing fighters, we can still see differences in personality and worldview. The women/ girls' strength is not proportional to how many traditionally male traits they have. SO GOOD!

They threaten the people on the ground. Basically Azula's message was: come with me or I'll make so much chaos and put in play so many nasty threats to their lives that your coworkers here will either die, be injured, or leave the circus and the circus will be ruined. The book titles Water, Earth and Fire refer to the seasons Winter, Spring and Summer in which the action is taking place, because as Roku told Aang he needs to complete his mission before the end of Summer. It's basically just the timeline of Aang's journey. Jeong Jeong already taught Aang some firebending in book 1 after all, so the book titles aren't really tied to what Aang is learning.

There is a fascinating thing going on thematically with Azula's blue fire. In animes, which Avatar takes a lot of stylistic cues from, the characters are often colour-coded with a mostly red themed protagonist, a blue themed antagonist and a green themed deuteragonist/other hero. Other western animations also like to use this scheme, for insatnce you might still remember Arcane where the three kids from the Undercity Vi, Jinx and Ekko fit into this red hero, blue villian, green secondary hero setup quite nicely. What is very interesting in Atla, is that while Azula, with her blue flames and name that literally means blue, is obviously the antagonist, however it is Zuko that get's the traditional protagonist red and Aang is the green hero other.

A lot of reactors tend to confuse Azula's blue fire with lightning. Lightning bending has a different sound effect, different stances and is animated quite differently. In episode 1, we see Azula lightning bend on two occasions: 1) during training (when we get the "almost isn't good enough" line, since one hair was out of place); and 2) at the end of her fight with Zuko - which uncle Iroh intervenes in by redirecting the lightning. During the fight, just before she lightning bends, Azula grabs hold of Zuko and launches a blast of fire bending at him (which I believe is the first time we see her fire bend). And if I remember correctly, Azula doesn't lightning bend at all in episode 3. It's just fire bending. In-universe, we have no explanation as of yet as to why her flames are blue, but it's safe to assume that it's connected to her name being 'Azula', seeing as 'azul' is spanish for 'blue'.

The cutting of the hair in last episodes does have a certain symbolism/significance. The Fire Nation's military draws inspiration from the Imperial Japanese military, and often the cutting of hair is meant to symbolize a loss of station or the end of an era in their life, and usually a drop in social status. It is also said to be symbolism for purification and renewal after terrible misfortune. So the cutting of the hair is meant to be a symbol of their decent to becoming fugitives of their nation, no longer royalty, as well as becoming new (and possibly better) people going forward

There's so many implications behind the "if you die in the Avatar state, no more Avatar," rule. When an Avatar dies, they're likely in a position where they really need the Avatar state. When an Avatar dies, they have to be in a situation that is absolutely hopeless and have the wisdom to know they will not be able to prevail. Every past Avatar that didn't die of old age had to die in a state where they've "given up," and have accepted death, otherwise there would not still be an Avatar. And knowing that rule, that is something every Avatar has to be looking for in their own future - knowing there's a situation coming where they will need to give in to death or else that is the end of the Avatar line, and that has to be on the front of their mind constantly.

Avatars are people. People with extraordinary power and huge responsibilities. I don't know if any of them were outright evil, but there are at least 2 that we know of who were not what one would call "Good people". Ruthless and unmerciful would be the more accurate description. Their goal was good - peace between people and balance in the world; but their methods could not be any more different from Aang's approach.

So, while Azula does have access to lightning, what she was using in this episode is actually blue fire. Blue fire tends to be more intense than red fire. I bring it up because she shot the blue fire and I heard you call it lightning.

To clarify, Azula is shooting blue flames but she also knows how to lightning bend, most of the time she's shooting blue flames not lightning. Lightning requires more focus and time to create than fire.

The cutting of the top knot is showing they both are no longer considered royalty. The top knot in Asian culture mainly Japanese I think is a show of wealth and belonging to the royalty or the privileged class. So basically both Zuko or Iroh both lost the title of Prince.

I missed, have you noticed yet that the benders in the opening for each element are characters from the show? With the exception of Earth, for whom an abandoned character design is used that doesn't remotely match the character that eventually ended up in the show. But otherwise, it depicts Pakku bending the water, Azula bending the fire and Aang bending the air.

I’m only halfway through this video and I’m assuming you’ve figured it out by now, but it’s driving me crazy that you haven’t realized Azula’s firebending is blue hahaha yes she can lightning bend but she hardly ever does it. When Zuko and Iroh cut off their top knots, it was likely meant to represent shedding their identity and connection to the royal family. It isn't described in the show, but it is clear that it helps personally significance to the characters. Also, I heard that Zuko's shaved head in season 1 represented shame/dishonor.
