14:50 Mal, in Latin is a prefix meaning "bad/poorly", as in "malformed" or "maladjusted". 15:37 that's part of the companion training. they become what a person needs or wants most. and to do that, they need a deep training in psychology. 20:04 just wait. juuuuuuust wait. for the last 20 years, my car has been named "Inara". if i were 45 years younger, i would be knocking on your door with flowers in hand. never change! nerd girls rule!

I love how quickly this show makes you fall in love with the characters. Most shows, especially sci-fi, take at least a whole season for a shakedown cruise to find their footing. But Firefly gets everything down from the very first episode. They put more in 14 episodes than most shows put in 24 at that time.

The most impressive thing about this episode is that it was written over a single weekend, to be a replacement pilot after Fox rejected the actual pilot. The way in which they were asked to reiterate all of the important information in a way that was natural and unobtrusive, without simply rehashing the pilot is nothing short of masterful. As for the episode itself, it's great! It does a fantastic job of really showing what kind of man Mal is and I absolutely love it. I also love how Mal isn't your typical, stoic action hero. He'll gladly whine about being in pain. 😆

@@davidbergfors6820 I don't think that's very likely given the way that scene is shot. The two actors are positioned very carefully in the first few shots so that none of their hands are visible (one's facing away, the other has his hands in his lap below the table) and the gloves aren't revealed until River's photo is put on the table in the last shot. The whole thing is very deliberately staged for the hands to be a "reveal".

“ Mal , bad , in the Latin “ is referring to literally as in malicious, malfunction, malfeasance,and pretty much any word with the prefix of mal is referring to something negative . Mal is easily fav character but they are all awesome for sure . It is nice to see someone react to this show as falling in love with the show is inevitable and nice to watch in real time lol. I am sooo very sorry for how you will feel when you are done . Kinda like falling in love with someone you know has cancer and will not last long , that was the best description I ever heard to describe how running out of the show feels . The movie is great but like a shorter version of the feeling lol . Glad you are joining us in loving the show , sorry about the hurt it gonna cause lol
@arthurclifford8290
@arthurclifford8290 Жыл бұрын
What River was suggesting is that mal is a Latin prefix for bad. As in malformed, malicious, or malcontent. That is Mal's contradictory perfection , he is good and bad. Bad enough to kick a dude in an engine, but good enough to know there was no choice in returning the medicine. I don't know if you caught the end shot where the two guys looking for River were both wearing blue gloves. 2 men with two blue hands (i.e. hands of blue two-by-two); Seeing the actual pilot at the end wasn't that bad because it was like a retrospective or a prequel. Also shiny is slang in the show that basically means good or ok. Like, are you shiny?, or are we shiny? When Kaylee woke up after being shot Mal asked her how she was and she said she was "shiny" meaning she was okay and she was all good. It might mean something more like "golden" in a all that glitters is gold sense and in keeping with the western-esque space-cowboy theme.

On languages/cultures, we now have 5 based on languages, vocabulary, accents and dialects: Alliance (Inara, Simon, River, Wash), Independent (Mal, Zoe, Kaley, Jayne), Mandarin/Chinese, British (Badger), and Finnish? I'm trying to be super-careful about any spoilers or even insinuations since Angela is so smart but I've always felt that the character of Jayne serves a contrarian purpose on the show. He's like the crazy, loud-mouthed uncle who says and does the wrong thing at a family function. He's really just there so everyone else can get along. Adam Baldwin is apparently brilliant at it because he's played the same character in a few shows and movies. Cheers from (the non-desert of) Florida. 😉

Early in the episode, River says "mal" as Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds walks out, saying it is Latin for "bad," which it is. "Mal" in Latin means "bad, badly, ill, poorly, wrong, wrongly." So, it was not (necessarily) her (intuitive) judgement of him.

for me, one thing that made Firefly different, made it memorable, made it seem real, was that all the characters are real people, they're not TV superheroes, they're ordinary folks, with beliefs, issues, ideals, attitudes, they're exactly like you and me, with the same wishes and worries, can we get paid, can we get to eat, make a living, make it through the week... we can all relate to that, we buy into it, and we like the characters like we like our actual friends, because they are the sort of people we would make friends with......I've rarely seen that depth of character in a TV series.The depth and the detail of the world/universe it is set in, is just as authentic, it's dirty, its rough and ready, the ship has dents and scratches on it, it isnt antiseptically clean and spotless like the Starship Enterprise is.....Firefly is a work truck, its been used and abused, it's battered but its REAL, you can feel that just by looking at it. The hints to each of the characters' backstories promised so much, and would have made such brilliant TV, it was a sin that the Suited Morons of Fox cancelled this series because they couldnt figure out what a gem they had on their hands............

This was the first episode that aired and the first one I watched. I was entertained thoughout the episode and liked the characters enough, but that ending made me a fan. Here I was thinking we're going to see Crow again and NOPE! Digging the title graphic for your reaction for Firefly. Kudos to them! I love the dialog and story. FIrefly is so quotable. "He's my hero" spoken like Fillion delivers it is fun. "Mal. Bad. In Latin" is... just that. The episode does do an excellent job rushing the introductions for those of us that didn't know there was a 2 hour pilot. River's story was interesting right off the bat with who they're being chased by. I went with my brother to a Halloween party where we dressed as these guys with blue latex gloves and showing the picture around. Only a couple people got it, since the show was new.

It's interesting how you pick up stuff that no one else seems to notice (including myself). I've watched Firefly a few times over the years and watched a fair share of reactions, but the fact that Mal was religious in ep1 I only know after you mentioning. (As well as you're still the only one I've seen ever mentioning that the key-holes of Prof. Heimerdingers door being very low 😂)

An extra layer to the whole "Western in Space" thing is that in the Western genre it's common for characters to be Civil War veterans, in particular Confederates, looking to move past that chapter of their lives (e.g. the main character in "The Outlaw Josey Wales" or Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit"). The parallels to Mal, the Browncoats, and Serenity Valley are pretty obvious when you look through that lens.

Zoe is the ultimate hard ass NCO. A born soldier and a stone killer. Jayne is a very tough criminal kept in check by Malcolm's force of personality, but still he keeps challenging him. Jayne doesn't backtalk Zoe. At all.

I love that you're reacting to this series. Regardless of Joss Whedon's problems, a lot of people worked on this show and made it something special. Firefly is a such a good example of character work, and we love the characters almost instantly. And yes, Kaylee must be protected at all costs. Mal is better because of the people he surrounds himself with. Left alone, he'd rot and turn evil. Firefly is a great found family story, and that's what makes it endearing. It's not a perfect family, and they fight a lot, and there's a good bit of dysfunction, but it works and there's some real love there.

@@Educated2Extinction One can but hope. As someone in the industry, I can say there is _less_ permissiveness these days. I'm not going to say we've eradicated poor behaviour but we're at least pushing it away (good!) or into hiding (not so good). The days of open misbehaviour are declining, especially now that the Ogre King is behind bars.

This is one of the best ensemble casts ever put together and became a passion project for creator, cast, and crew. Nathan Fillion (Capt. Mal) has gone on to star in CASTLE and THE ROOKIE, but had an early role as 'the wrong Ryan' in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Gina Torres (Zoe) came from the Xena-verse, as a guest star in several episodes of HERCULES, XENA, and CLEOPATRA 2525, and was Jennifer Garner's nemesis in J.J. Abrams' ALIAS resulting in some epic smack downs between two highly trained agents (and actors who liked doing their own fights). Adam Baldwin (Jane Cobb) is no stranger to action or sci-fi and appeared in FULL METAL JACKET, PREDATOR 2, INDEPENDENCE DAY, THE PATRIOT, and X-FILES to name a few. He was the XO in THE LAST SHIP (about a Navy ship during a viral pandemic). Alan Tudyk has spent a lot of his career voicing animation like characters in ICE AGE, or robots such as the one in I, ROBOT, or K2SO in STAR WARS-ROGUE ONE. He also appeared in the tv remake of 'V' (Visitor) where Morena Baccarin played the evil alien queen. FIREFLY was one of her earlier roles but has gone on to impressive performances in HOMELAND and the apocalyptic GREENLAND with Gerard Butler, not to mention other sci-fi tv series and voicing super heroes, before being DEADPOOL's girlfriend. Creator Joss Whedon discovered Summer Glau when he needed a Russian speaking ballerina for an episode of ANGEL, her first role. Like every fan since, fell in awe of her natural abilities to act with her whole body as she does with River Tam. She grew more popular when she crossed over into the James Cameron world as the 'good' TERMINATOR in THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES (which I highly recommend for its production value, writing, and acting. Lena Headey of GAME OF THRONES is awesome in the role of Sarah Connor. Like James Cameron, Joss Whedon likes to recast his favorite people. Summer Glau and Alan Tudyk were both in his very weird and original DOLL HOUSE, Which starred Eliza Dushku and Amy Acker from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and ANGEL, and co-stars Tahmoh Pinikett, who you will meet on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. Badger also shows up in BATTLESTAR. Gina Torres and Adam Baldwin were also in ANGEL, which filmed side by side with FIREFLY. In fact, if one of Niska's henchman looked familiar with the dark spiked hair it's because Mike Massa is David Boreanaz' stunt double borrowed from the next set over for the fight in Serenity's cargo bay. Nathan Fillion himself was a bad guy in the final season of BUFFY and several of the bad guys have appeared in numerous Whedon shows. FIREFLY didn't perform well in the ratings and the studios didn't understand the kooky world that Joss had created so it flopped, initially. But, dedicated fans, calling themselves 'Brown Coats' petitioned and pressures studio execs to bring it back. The movie SERENETY is our season 2 and the cast was game to reprise the characters they loved. The cast developed such a friendship that they still get together for fun. Nathan Fillion has had several of them on his show CASTLE and is constantly dropping 'easter eggs' aka references to FIREFLY. This was a gem only a lucky few got to cherish.

Refreshing to see a character of faith who’s faith is treated with respect by the show. Too often the “religious” guy is the easy target, or just the ultra creepy evil guy masquerading as good. This show lets Book be more than the standard cliche goody 2 shoes or religious nut. He’s a Sheppard, (preacher) & that’s all we know when we meet him, but over the season we get to see a few hints to an “interesting” past. More compassion than condemnation… even when situations get “special” 😉 Can only wonder about where his character & Mal’s would have gone had the show continued.

When you see Inara in the first episode "earning an honest wage" and the timepiece is mentioned by her client, (considering that planets and moons are in motion on different orbital distances and daily rotations), Inara will need a reliable timepiece set to the 24 hour cycle enforced by the Alliance.

I cannot say for certain having not spoken to Joss in the last decade but the first time I came across "Shiny" was in the follow-up game to the extremely popular "EQ." When EQ2 hit beta in 2003 there was a in-game mechanic where a mushroom-sized 'star' would randomly appear on the ground. These very quickly became known as a "Shiny" and soon after that gamers started using that expression to mean "ok or chill or yay! or fun." The fad ended about as quickly as it began but you still run into it in various MMO's even today. Anyway, like I said, don't know for certain but it's as good an explanation as any. Shiny!

New-ish subscriber here. Absolutely loving your reaction to Ep 1 and 2 so far. This is one of my favorite shows ever, and you seem to catch every witty comment and humorous piece and I am here for it. The Mal in Latin, in case no one said, is just the old prefix mal- means a bad thing. Malodorous, malformed, malice, etc. I am going to be not so patiently waiting for future reactions, I definitely look forward to you seeing some scenes in the future. Also, remember, two by two - hands of blue, I believe it was going to be a driving factor in future seasons as well, so sad.

I hate to tell you, but Mandarin is Chinese. China is a very big country, and there are actually a lot of languages spoken there. Sometimes they are referred to as dialects, but it would probably be just as accurate to refer to all of the languages spoken in Europe as dialects of European. Mandarin is the language spoken in Beijing (and also the official language of Taiwan, I believe). The swearing in Chinese isn't just simple curse words. The writers apparently would come up with some pretty elaborate and creative phrases which they would then send to the person they had lined up to translate them into Chinese. After being filtered through the non-Chinese speaking cast I'm not sure how possible it would be to figure out exactly what they were actually saying, but I really wish someone would come up with a complete listing of the various Chinese phrases used in each episode and post it online somewhere.
