As an older, lifelong anime fan, my first introduction to the FMA universe was the original 2003 anime and I didn't even get a hold of the manga until after I had finished watching all of it. In FMA (2003), Hughes lasts until the 16th episode, and his death is perhaps even MORE crushing, because 2003 added a miniarc where Ed prepares for his state alchemy exam and stays with Hughes and Gracia during that time--and the birth event (which by now you've seen of course, being in the next episode about Rush Valley) was transferred to Gracia giving birth to Elicia ON ED'S 12th BIRTHDAY while the boys were staying with them. Hughes' death was super soul-crushing...and yet, even suspecting it was coming in the canon story, it's hard not to cry every time I read the chapter or watch the episode. One of the very, very saddest deaths in anime/manga history.

Not a completely unheard of writing device, The Orville did it too, but most shows usually go the route of focusing heavily on a side character only for the episode in which they're killed. Most writers don't seem to like intentionally putting that much development into non main characters they plan to kill off.

Just to add a light layer of emotional damage: Elicia is shouting about how much important work "Daddy" has to do, because he told her "...[Daddy] has a bunch of important work to do...but I promise I'll do it as fast as possible." I've seen both Alchemist shows a billion-thousand times each, myself, but it's fun to see a new fan think about what's happening, expressing their thoughts and and asking questions. It's refreshing and great. Aside from the reaction, itself, _that_ alone is genuinely fun to listen to. Enjoy the journey! Incidentally, that said, I'm also a sympathetic crier, so respectfully go to Hell for getting my tears flowing here, dammit... lol

To lighten the mood a little bit, a story I found in the anniversary book. So, there's a series of companion novels (light novels?) for FMA, not written by the author, but she does oversee the lore and stuff for them(they're not required reading don't worry). Anyways, apparently during one meeting with the author of the novels, the novel author made a comment about liking Hughes (and possibly wanting to do something with Hughes in the next book?). At which point Arakawa-sensei(the manga author) and her editor just went dead silent and started nervously sweating and looking at each other. Because, this whole conversation took place BEFORE Hughes died (it's not specified how far before but it sounded like no more than like, a couple chapters, so it was very close to happening). And the poor novelist was just like 'what's wrong, what's going on, what aren't you telling me?????'. Like, talk about the worst timing ever.
@saiyasha848

I think the bits cutting to Ed, Al and Winry are the ones that hurt the most. They demonstrate how the world doesn't just stop just becasue someone died. It goes on and people talk normally about that person, because they don't know. Ed complaining at any other time would have elicited no more than a "Don't be so uptight" with a little smile, but in this context, you suddenl know that he will never be able to tell hughes "Thank you" he won't even be able to say "You spoil your daughtr" or "Jeez I am tired of hearing about how wonderful your wife is" And you just now that their world will come crumbling down too, once they learn.

Probably the last thing you wish to teach to young orphean. A little late to this but the cross of Al's shoulder, as well as Ed's jacket, is known as the Flamel Cross. In biblical terms the combination of the serpent and cross could refer to Divine Sin, which has led many to believe the Flamel Cross in representative of those who commit the sin of Human Transmutation. It could also be a reference to Hermes the Greek God of Travel and Alchemy. In reality the symbol was created by Nicolas Flamel who spent his life study alchemy particularly the philosopher stone. In alchemy it stands for "fixing of the volatile", which could be considered shorthand for purifying or removing poisonous elements.

Something a bit more lighthearted: The Melon is a bit of a cultural dissconect. In Japan it is customary ro bring fruits to a sickbed or hopsital visit, or sometimes just when you visit someone in general. This is because due to Japans Mountainous Inland and Seaside edges, Growing fruit isn't very easy, so they have been seen as a statussymbol and something precious for many centuries and to this day, this tradition endures. Melons are especially sought after, so Bradly is really splurging here. (Gift Melons can be really expensive in Japan, they come wrapped up like Jewels and everything)

Another gut punch that I loved for me was in the original iteration of the show, as Ed and Al are talking about how annoying Hughes is about his love for his family, the train passes by a station and Ed sees Hughes, huge smile, waving at them as they go by. It took me many years to realize that had Hughes not died, none of the events to come would have happened. No one would have been motivated enough. As much as it burns coming off my tongue, Hughes *had* to die. Yes, Nina was a driving force, but for Ed and Al it was a depressing low point, one that slowed them down. Hughes' is pushing them (all of them) forward, you can see it on their faces even in this episode.

FMA is a nice example of Heroic Grim, extra Grim.

What I love about FMAB is that death ... matters*. From trying to reverse Tricia Elric's leading Ed and Al to nearly dying to kick the story off, to Nina's showing Ed that alchemy isn't infallible or all powerful, to Hughes putting Roy and his team on the hunt. And it never stops mattering. * Except Shou Tucker's. Screw that guy.

Im so sorry, but I laughed so hard when you went to drink red bull. Your reaction had such "COME ON!" energy lol. Like, "WOW, that was a lot, its safe to relax now right?". We all had to go through it D=

Lust being difficult to kill was already shown in the manga, during her conversation with Dr. Marcoh. When Lust demanded to know where he hid the stolen research files, she attempted to torture the information out of Marcoh by stabbing him in the shoulder. But Marcoh used his blood to draw a transumation circle, on the wall he was pinned against; causing a massive, stone spike to erupt from the wall and impale Lust through the abdomen. However, Lust simply cut the spike out, and immediately regenerated the damage.

The teacher did NOT teach them transmutation without circles as thats impossible without very specific events occurring that she didnt lead them into. All she taught them was real alchemy and the morals to use it

Nothing but empathy. This show's story line is a hard row to hoe, but worth it. You've picked some heavy shows to watch at the same time. These are the type of shows that make you feel.. they reach in and grab those emotions and brink them right to the surface...

Although he has his flaws, I think you can judge Roy by the people who think of him as a friend. I knew this would be a tough one for you, especially today; but I hadn't realised how hard it would be for me this time around. Since the last time I saw it, I witnessed a father of young children being murdered in real life. I cried first time around watching this episode, but I've been absolutely bawling this time. A terrible day for rain, indeed.

“I don’t like change” is pretty ironic for a series all about changing materials into others. Also ironic for anime, sense most will have different openings as the series go on
