@@evilcaddy 308 typically refers to 7.62x51 and civilian variant 308 winchester. They are certainly much longer compared to 7.62x39 and cannot fit into standard AK platform. It can fit in Yugo M76 (AK style sniper rifle and DMR) though it's typically used in 7.92x57 Mauser.

So 7.62mm ammo fits nicely into .308 chambers, as a rule." 7.62 and 308 are almost identical. Both rounds will fire out of guns designed for the other just running 308 in a 7.62x51 firearm is dangerous because 308 runs at a higher psi.

The standard round was the 7.62x39mm But the funny part about it is the 7.62x39mm is actually at a 7.92mm diameter so it's actually alot closer to the 8mm Mauser round of WWII Germany which was a 7.92 diameter. None of that matters though because the AK74 replaced the AK47 years ago, the NATO round it carries is slightly less potent but has the basic roll and tumble effect as the 5.56mm Ball Ammo of the US Military/NATO.

But you are right, there are AK variants chambered in .308, but these are based on the Dragunov sniper rifle, which is an upscaled AK. This kind of rifle has been built to shoot the 8x57 in Yugoslavia, too. Nowadays you can buy AK's or AK-like rifles in almost any caliber. Even 12ga. These don't have anything to do with the real service AK. Furthermore the .308 is way more expensive to produce than the 7.62x39 because its larger and needs more material. As you can see, your comment is invalid.
