Hi Jim!! Just started watching your channel and I absolutely love it. You seem like a treasure yourself! Rarely comment about anything but I’m interested in metal detecting in south WI Don’t know where to begin with buying equipment. I know I will be mainly searching in grass covered ground but also have some beaches along Lake Michigan. If you have time to respond I’d appreciate any advice you could share with me!! Happy hunting! ♥️

There are a lot of great detectors on the market now but I really like the versatility of the Minelab Equinox. But I would take the time to research the detectors people are using in your area. Honestly the ground the all the minerals in that ground should determine what machine would work best.

What's the metal detecting etiquette? I have a detector from Garrett and would like to give it a shot at the local SoCal beaches, just don't want to step on any toes.
@tommychew65442 ай бұрын
I'll kick in my green two cents. I've been a Garrett user since the early eighties. I have many trusted detectorist friends that I comment back and forth with. You can find things up in the dry sand but not down in the wet, the saltwater causes issues with the AT Max that I own from what I have been told. Garrett is just now coming out with a new Vortex multilevel detector line that I can't wait to see someone use down in the salt water wet areas, it has a mode for it. And the beach is free range, if anyone has a problem, it's on them not you. And people miss plenty of good targets, a beach is never searched out.
@terrirogers69652 ай бұрын
I agree that the beach is free game, but I personally try not to get too close to others. The biggie, always fill in your holes! Always! Always take what you dig with you, don’t leave the beach worse than you found it. Always leave the beach cleaner than you found it. 😊
@tommychew65442 ай бұрын
@@terrirogers6965 100% You always do that! I like how Pirate Mike always makes sure to get the plastic off the beaches. Those plastics kill our sea life and birds. Plastics will likely be our downfall. From fish nets to bottles and even cigarette buts. They are not natural to any animal, we made them. Their introduction has changed more then we will ever understand.
@funwithjim2 ай бұрын
Just go have fun, where ever you want to hunt on any SoCal beach is good with every detectorist. We are just a fun community enjoy to same hobby. Now, if someone is gridding an area just wave and walk around giving them enough space to keep gridding.

Question, I'm in Georgia, woods may have 8-10 inches top soil, newer residential areas maybe a foot of fill dirt, old residential usually 5 or 6 inches of softer dirt. Either way eventually you get down to hard pack or clay of sorts where the oldest stuff stops sinking. How much sand would an average beach in CA, GA, SC,.. wherever, have? And how deep could the 50-100-200 year old stuff possibly end up? Love your vids 💯
@funwithjim2 ай бұрын
Great question, from my experience the older items all collect together in collection areas on the beach, some times it takes years for the items to be either pushed up because of a large long period swell or storm with high wind swell or current shift causing a lateral drift that exposes the area. So when we talk depth it could be 15ft of sand or more that all the good targets get slowly collected to over the years. I waited 25 years for one area of the beach to produce, and it only lasted 12 hours.

For a while the fashion was to have “stackable” rings. People can wear 2-3-4 or more at once. 9 times out of 10, the rings are junk metal. So the tiny ring with the stone is probably a stackable.

@funwithjim2 ай бұрын
Well, I would have to show you why I don't. Meet me at my local beach some day and I can show you exactly why without having to poopoo the Manticore and how much more difficult it is to use and why I use the 900 on my local beach. The same reason on why I do not use the XP Deus II on my local beach unless certain conditions are present.
@jeffprovost6642 ай бұрын
@@funwithjim I would really like to meet you and see you in action. However I’m in Florida and probably wont make it out there. I knew there had to be a reason you can’t use the Manticore. Black sand probably the main culprit. Interesting how machines react in different locations. Always look forward to your videos.

@tommychew65442 ай бұрын
You're 100% correct on the work harder part, what most people don't realize is that it's not just going out early. It's understanding the conditions of the area and knowing your machine intimately. That's what most don't understand, it's not a take it out of the box and find gold 99% of the time, that's not the case. You have to put in the time and truly work hard to figure out what your machine is trying to tell you, if you have it set correctly for the conditions you are in. That's why there are so many naysayers out there. They just didn't have the ability to pick on how to do it.
