Right? I think he was lying to Carmella to appear powerful and in control. Tony has very little sway in Italy, especially compared to Furio.

He may have. He had those "cousins" under his payroll. All he would have to do is send them a few thousand dollars. A lot of poor people in Italy too. $10,000 american money is probably like $50,000 there. I know people in America who would die so their family can have $50,000. So it's very possible it could've happened. Just not as likely as in America where Tony has all the hierarchal power and not just financial power.

It should be noted that even Ralph, who never had a good thing to say about anyone, got up to tend to Furio slipping on that ice. Furio was loved by all and in no way was Ralph getting up to get away from the his money dispute with Paulie. Furio was a saint.

@@MaryLou913 There are perfectly good reasons why Furio slapped that kid and Asian lady around. And David Chase alluded to it in later episodes. You see, video quality wasn't as sharp as it is now and fortunately it doesn't dilute how great of a show it was but it does lead to people getting the wrong impression about Furio. Those two people that Furio "slapped" had bees on them. Furio hates bees because they sting people. Some are even allergic to them. He's trying to save lives while dressed in bespoke Italian fashion wear. Sainthood bound, imo.

@@WowLynchWow I remember that the relationship with the Camorra worsens after Furio's return to Campania, because Furio surely had to explain the reason to Annalisa, and she being his cousin will protect him by any means, in fact Tony in the end can't even ask the Neapolitan killers in person, but he has to tell Silvio and Bobby, if he uses his subordinates to talk to another boss, it means that the situation is dangerous for him.

I really enjoyed revisiting Carmelo and Furio with you! I also appreciate your refreshing attitude towards this storyline, since so many people seemed to dislike it while the show was one. I liked it. My only bone to pick with what you said is that I wouldn't describe it was "soap opera"--just because there's an actual, albeit thwarted, romantic storyline in the show doesn't mean that these things don't happen to people in the real world (especially in mid-life). We see Carmela go through multiple mid-life crises throughout the show (and now that I'm actually her age (I was closer to Chris and Adriana's age when the show came out) I have a deeper understanding of those crises)--mostly crises of faith, but others as well--and each time she finds a potential way out of her relationship with Tony, only to return, every time.

super weird of you to only see the dynamic with the teacher to be cynical/transactional from carmela's direction. the guy knows exactly what he's doing and only regrets it immediately after post-nut clarity sets in, i.e. he morally disagrees with what he did but he did it for the chance to hit it again. he insults and vilifies her so he doesn't have to face his own complicity, that's why he's so oddly blunt and crude about it--we know he's a man of linguistic poise, in fact. just like carmela, he's desperate to avoid facing himself.

I know that Furio is a stone cold killer as all of the mobs are, but still, i want him and Carmella to escape to Italy, take AJ there, and leave Tony in the US alone. And live happily together as a really loving couple. I somehow belive that he would really respect Carmella and NEVER cheat on her like Tony did. Carmella isn't saint, but she is exceptional wife and mother and she did deserve a better husband. And again, I'd argue with myself that she got what she deserved by staying with Tony and turning a blind eye on his "work". And yet still, i feel that Furio's feelings towards her were real and raw and she as a woman could've had a much more fulfilling marriage...

Carmela was unhappy. I think people leave out the cultural aspects of her character way too often. She was not only a mob wife, and we saw what Tony started when she finally did try to end the marriage, as well as it being the only time we witness physical abuse. But she is also Catholic and that is a major part of what defines her. The reaction she had at the mention of her friend divorcing Big Pussy was pretty telling. She had given up her life to be with Tony, and spent years being neglected, cheated on, and being bought off. While that was ultimately her choice, there was more involved than just the financial aspect. I think people are way too harsh about her character in comparison to others on the show. I also don't think she is nearly as shallow as people claim. She offers more emotional depth to the story than most people do. She may have been a hypcrite, but she was also a product of her environment, generation, and circumstances. And she spent her entire adult life with a husband who would make damn sure she got fucked out of any attempt she might make to leave him. That's kind of how that sort of dynamic works. She wouldn't just be giving up luxuries or creature comforts, she would be under actual risk. Yet, everyone acts like that risk doesn't exist.
@stuffwithsoph8264
@stuffwithsoph8264 Ай бұрын
I agree 100% Carmella is a deeply complex woman and a fantastic example of a well written woman in fiction. She's locked in a decision she made at a young age and if she stays she disrespects herself but if she leaves she also disrespects herself to God, not as easy as "your husband is evil and you're greedy" like many portray her to be. Don't get me wrong she IS materialistic but she's not cartoonish either.

I guess I can see an argument being made there, but beyond Bobby mourning for her, I don't think we have enough evidence to jump to that conclusion. We never see a whole lot of Karen, or her relationship with Bobby. We were also never provided with any real evidence that Bobby had a romantic side during his courtship with and marriage to Janice. It is definitely strongly implied that Bobby and Karen had a better relationship than most of the couples, but all of that is largely based on Bobby mourning her loss, the special place her last ziti held in his heart, and the fact Bobby was said to never have a woman on the side. I would concede that Bobby and Karen had a loving relationship, but I doubt they had the same type of traditionally romantic chemistry shared by Carmela and Furio. Cheers!

@@MaryLou913The Italians were doing business with Jersey. Furio interfered with that? Why wouldn't they take him out to keep business going. Furio's uncle laid it out. Furio was made, but a hired hand.

Tony could never touch furio in Italy. Ffs the uncle basically even supports him in killing Tony. Furio was the cousin of annalisa the boss. You’re all so confused. Lmfao. Tont was just saying that for bravado. If furio had actually boned Carmela…. Then that’s totally different. Tony would have had a legitimate beef and could have killed him, here in America. But furio did nothing wrong at all, and went back to Italy. He is beyond protected there.

I am guessing people don't really know what that vinegar was. Balsamic vinegar from Modena is the most prized vinegar in the world, the real deal can cost 100 for a deciliter (that would be 3 ounces). Now, homemade vinegar is even more valued, because people actually do it the traditional way and age it in small barrels for decades. The vinegar used today was laid down by their father or grandfather, they are laying down vinegar for their children and grandchildren. It's not just some sour wine, it's the best of the best.

Furio had his shot when he could have pushed Tony into the propeller blade. It's difficult to say if those two would have worked out had Furio killed Tony that night. As mentioned, if Furio still had his lust for Carmella if he wouldn't have come back upon Tony getting killed... assuming that Tony didn't send someone till kill Furio in Italy like he threatened to do.

Honestly furio was maybe the best character and best man on the whole show. Yes of course he’s a violent gangster. But he kinda seems to be the only one really living up to the supposed codes and what have you. Honor and respect. And he’s a romantic. 🥰 And he was very well played bet the actor Federico.
