Over thirty years ago, perforce I was a practitioner of 'bangernomics'. Into my hands came an eight years old 1984 Volvo 360GLS with nine months MOT. I ended up running this car for eleven years as it proved very reliable although it did need some body work done along the way. Driven with a light foot, it returned 30 - 35 mpg, which surprised me. Even the demise of leaded four star petrol and the change to unleaded did not seem to bother it.

When you left Gothenburg, the architecture reminded me of some of the most soulless concrete in recovered industrial areas in Paris, like that around Rosa Parks station... however, you did make the journey far more sensibly than the time I drove from Munich to Peterborough via Bromley - in a day at the end of 1999. Now, looking back *that* was pretty bloody daft. Left Munich at 7.45 local time, got home about midnight - and then the next morning took the hire car down to Stansted Airport to pick my own car up (part of a Hertz fly/drive scheme). Certainly wouldn't do it again, but it was achieved with two tankfuls of petrol across mainland Europe. What an epic trip though - I look forward to the Volvo Museum footage.

I use hotel comparison sites to find somewhere to stay then book direct with the hotel itself. I try to stay in privately owned places or small, local chains where possible and booking directly helps them out. I find they’re often more flexible when it comes to things like parking, arrival and departure times, looking after your bags for a couple of hours and having a late beer.

@@furiousdriving. Yes road trips are expensive, but that Volvo it hella thirsty. I did a similar road trip last year - flew to buy a then 29 y.o "classic" and then drive it 1850km back home, solo. It is a 4.0L in line six, with 4 speed auto, and averaged 27mpg (10.2L/100km) on the journey back home, so comfortably more economical than your Volvo (I'd want to check if there's an issue with it running "rich" or something, because that is terrible economy from a 2.0L?). Being in Australia, number of countries visited = 1, and 99.9% of the travel was within just one state (I live about 1km over the border in the neighboring state). My Ford performed faultlessly on the journey home, and is a very comfy cruiser like your Volvo. Cheers!

you have got to keep the Volvo now. In 2002 I bought a 1986 740 GLE estate B230K engine and bought a holiday home in Normandy France to renovate. Bought an old 4 berth caravan for £300 and towed it from the Midlands to Portsmouth with a flat pack kitchen inside, sink, worktops and 2 small roof windows inside and estate full. Fitted a stabiliser. Found it so thirsty. Suspect 15mpg! Had to fill up on my journey down to Portsmouth even though filled up before setting out. Relief to get on the ferry. Good in the day as at the time Brittany Ferries were letting caravans go free. Put me on with the HGV's! Looked massive on the deck. Only a 90 minute drive to our place from Cherbourg, but still needed more fuel. Lived in the caravan while renovating the cottage.

Hi Matt, to continue from yesterday in 'downtown" Sydney< Australia. as an aside, a standard "boring" trip up to my land in the country & back to the city is a ROUTINE 2,000 mile trip !!! frequently I'll have a 3 day weekend working doing chores up there. The trip up there in any of my 6 old luxury classics is a doddle , what they were really meant for, the range to pick from is:- either my 2 RHD Ausie GMH built Cadillac's, or my 2 Aussie Ford built RHD Lincolns, my 1982 Australian HDT Holden Statesman Caprice (a peter brock racing driver enhanced roadburner) dressed like the most ultimate late70's early '80's Euro/American luxury car imaginable (think Monterverdi 375/4 their giant 4 door sedan) I've owned this since new, and my Impeccable 1967 Jaguar mk10/420G (complete with ultra-high output bronze head). With giant fuel tanks in all of them only one stop is required. I had to LAUGH at the QUEUEs of EV's at easter waiting to charge up , , even better on the easter trip was seeing the "dead, beached whale EV's" that had just run out of "puff" and stopped totally drained of charge, -- no doubt as seeing A ONE KILOMETRE QUEUE of EV's to charge up was just to horrific to contemplate , so hey run it flat & call NRMA (same as AA or RAC in the UK) and get towed for free , still faster than a MULTI Hour EV charge queue wait !! Long distance motoring in long wheelbase, wide track, full power huge capacity V8's or a 340 hp vintage Jag Mk10, what's not to like. re MPG , I feel 20 mpg , stunning , and after exhaustive testing by NRMA , the NRMA found many new cars use way way more petrol and diesel than their makers state in real world conditions., with many little light weight new nasty little cars in real world conditions "eating" staggering amounts of fuel. But best of all was some of the real world head on smash testing, at 100kph/60mph not the JOKE baby sized slow ANCAP ratings speeds. Making near 90% of these supposedly safe 5-star cars "suicide cocoons" when going head to head at 100kph (60 mph). Destroying "fridge" white ones, so when looking at them it was difficult with what little remained to determine what brand of car you were seeing. All were obliterated as if they had been blown up or bombed, not head on crash tested, all outcomes were a joke, at real world speeds ALL were death traps , just purely TOO small. I will be keeping my monster cars a while longer, thank you Some of the head on EV tests were even worse as not only did cars squash but ALL burst into flames, now ALL Australian EV's have the green warning logo on their rego plates as a warning also to first responders as you cannot safely use the "jaws of life" to cut people from wrecks as you may kill yourself when cutting through a cable.

Sadly the next V79 was a Mondeo in Drag, so I decided to change to a W212 E Class. Again their W213 is essentially a Lap top on wheels and for a small improvement in m.p.g. is not as well built ( Trade Dealer Comment). Still have the 1993 190 E one of the last imported and owned since 97. Really enjoyed your trilogy and the maze of rods around Goteborg is why we became lost pre Sat Nav. Lots of clues remain though to what was meant to be. The Scottish Roads Archive site covers it brilliantly

My 940 just clocked over 300,000 klm. Still runs as sweet as when new. Doesn’t use oil between changes (5000klm) . I am a firm believer to change at that on all my cars, even though oil still has a light tan colour.
@GoldenCroc Жыл бұрын
You do as you want of course, but with modern oils, you can triple that interval easily unless you have a very unfavorable driving profile.
@jackjacko8706 Жыл бұрын
@@GoldenCroc we are dealing with old engines that produce more carbon deposits which contaminate the oil. Oil is a relative cheap insurance against wear.

@@jackjacko8706 Do engines of this vintage really produce that much more carbon? Havent really heard of it before... Not anything of note, anyway. As far as I know, the port fuel injected cars like your 940 and up to direct injection technologies, are the lowest carbon producing engines made. It got much worse again with direct injection... Also, diesel engines get totally black oil within a few miles.... And still people run them 2-30000k between oil changes per manufacturer recommendation with no noteworthy ill effects, at least if you got a favorable driving profile.

That was an epic trip! Very impressed with the Volvo as well. Eindhoven is also a lovely town been there few years ago. Here's a thought I bet converting the Volvo to an electric fan would improve economy and performance.

I probably should, Ive done the Rover 2000 and that improved it

6:46 that building to the left there (black and chrome) is on of my companies offices! There's a great restaurant in that red brick building up ahead! And yes, finding you rway around in Göteborg is horrible.

Yep, same for me. Have to wait for a while I guess, 360p is a bit low to be bearable to watch for me.

@@p12jacob It should. For some reason when you first upload videos it takes time for them to show in HD.

Gothenburg looks very interesting, as does the Volvo museum. 21 mpg, 😬 thats painful over such a distance. Fortunately i msnaged 42 mpg on my euro trip in the megane coupe which i though was very respectae for a 90's coupe. Probably a tad lighter than rhe volvo and mkre aerodynamic. Looking forward to catching up with you at the Social next Sunday.
