It’s actually a real SUV. When the current crop of Qasqui+clones came out they were called crossovers as they looked like SUV without the off-roading capability but that seems to have been forgotten over the years. Great video Matt. Quick repairs are very satisfying.

@@groeacht8525 youd be surprised that people were brainwashed into thinking you need 4wd for everything off the road. Look at some mountainous hotels in the 60s, 70s or 80s with their unpaved roads. And then look at the cars parked infront of them. You'll notice a large amount of normal, everyday cars without 4wd and just a few REAL offroaders, unlike todays "offroaders".

I swear, these kind of jobs are the most satisfying thing to do on a new(-to-you) car. Heading back from the scrappie with a haul of nice quality parts and spending an afternoon with a cupper and some screwdrivers to stab it all in. Bliss. Excellent work Matt, I can tell Hippo's going to enjoy being owned by you.

Modern carrier bags are biodegradable. After a year or two that will turn to dust - so only useful as a temporary fix.
@groeacht8525
@groeacht8525 2 жыл бұрын
That's not any carrier bag tho, it's an M&S carrier bag, made of only the finest polyethylene. They only degrade in sunlight, so it should be fine in there, well until the door bottom rots out anyway.
@DashCamSerbia
@DashCamSerbia 2 жыл бұрын
Those biodegradable bags only disinterate into tiny pieces, which remain harmful, but are easier to absorbe by the soil. So they are actually much worse then the regular plastic bags, because at least them you canjust pick out from the soil, while biodegrdable you can not.

Nice to see your improvements to the Freelander. Reusing old parts from old cars at the scrappies is a really satisfying and affordable way of keeping old cars going and looking nice. My local garage always advises me the price of main dealer parts and scrappie parts when doing repairs - a power steering pump for my car was over £200 new, and just £60 from the local scrappie, and has worked just fine for 5 years now.

If you drive an earlier Freelander, stick yer head in underneath & take a close look at the rear subframe the diff/suspension hang out of. Specifically, look at the 2 tubes that join both "frames" of the subframe unit. Have a good feel around the upper side of them. Chances are they're in 1 of 2 states - either fine or totally corroded. Totally corroded is not good. So check. Owners are usually oblivious. While you're under there, look at the 2 bearings that support the driveshaft to the rear diff. They're either side of the big coupling. Ones I get in here to work on, those 2 bearings are usually toast & the owners are usually oblivious. They're also usually oblivious to the lack of any oil in the diff itself. Or the transfer/gearbox. Or the fact the cardon spiders in the driveshaft are knackered. Changing the 2 driveshaft carrier bearings can be "Fun" - so don't assume you can pop on new ones in 5 minutes. Generally the stuff you need to open to do the job won't want to open. I do lol a little when I hear people say they're going to swap their own diff/subframe/carrier bearings. Generally, you'd better have your big-boy pants on if tackling these "simple jobs" on the driveway. The dream often dies rapidly when the nuts on the driveshafts refuse to budge.... It goes from there.. We use a 1" airgun on those & even it whinges on lots of them. They can be "Quite tight"...

I had one with high miles (3 door van TD4) it hadnt been looked after that well. Consider the oil cooler if you suspect it hasnt had a coolant swap/refresh over the years, my cooler let go and you end up with the engine oil forced into the coolant system and every inch of the under bonnet space, and your drive. It had broken down due to corrosion internally and that was that, a huge mess. A few other niggles but the car did quite well after I had spent a few quid and hours fettling it.

My freelanders auto box only drives in 4th, has done now for 60000 miles and I don't know what's wrong with it but that makes it very, very sluggish to move off as it slips up till about 50mph. Only way around it is to clear the code with a reader whilst it's running and that lasts around 10 or so seconds and fails again so I've resorted to clearing the codes constantly as I drive when I want the extra power/ speed

So many Td4 Freelanders seen with smoke pouring out the back (like filling the street with smoke to mild smoking) so sad when mechanics that don't know tell owners they need a new engine, turbo all sorts of expensive stuff, and all it is a easy to change rear upper engine breather blocked that's the same as a BMW 3 series with that engine, the modified design one, does away with the foam bit that blocks up, smoke will clear up after the first drive after changing it with a few torx bits and unclipping the spill rails, simple stuff if your gentle and careful with the plastic bits which will be old and brittle by now. hope this helps someone.........cheers

On mine it was water ingress causing corrosion on the braided wires that go from the speaker terminals to the cone. Resoldering fixed it and it's still working 4 years later! There's a flap of plastic from the plastic moisture sheet that goes over the speaker, but it's not really adequate so I added a bit of protection myself. I also smothered the speaker terminals with silicone grease.
