Furness Abbey - Cumbria

Join us as we take a tour around Furness Abbey, once the second richest abbey in England dating back to 1123. Just outside Barrow-in-Furness the ruins are maintained by English Heritage.
The impressive remains of Furness Abbey which was founded by Stephen, later King of England. The remains include much of the east end and west tower of the church, the ornately decorated chapter house and the cloister buildings.

Thanks George. We debated as to whether to add music because of tge birdsong but decided it actually fitted well. English Heritage who oversee the abbey do a wonderful job of maintaining the grounds. Thankyou for your continued support of the channel. We really do appreciate it.

These places always amazes me by their size and taking decades to build. The communities living in them were large and disappeared over time Thanks for sharing and absolutely agree a you get older history becomes more important and interesting …. It fascinates us as to how the craftsmanship of buildings like this has stood the test of time,yet modern structures last for a miniscule length of time by comparison. I guess it is because as we get older we realise what a fragment of time we are actually here for. Yep, you were correct, this was a two cuppa video, along with a green chili and cheese tamale! What a brilliant video gentlemen. You led us all on a peaceful and tranquil tour of the beautiful grounds.The combination of birds tweeting, the beautiful piano piece and your commentary was very relaxing. It is very fascinating that the builders used wood for the foundation. I think I might have missed the explanation for the using of wood. I'll have to look up Furness Abbey. ...Most of our trail heads and trails are littered with doggy poo bags. Along with an enormous amount of dog poo just laying about. Our dog owners in Bozeman are generally, not very respectful about picking up their poo. It has become a rather serious issue at many of our more popular trail heads. I'm glad you guys found but one poo bag. Anyway, thanks again for a stellar video. Have a loverly weekend and week. I'll see you both next Friday. Cheers my friends!

It is a fascinating place. We are so lucky to be able to visit places like this,and thankful that English Heritage take care of them for us,and future generations to enjoy. We really didn't realise just how big the place was and it definitely gave us more of an idea when we saw the drone footage afterwards. Even better is that campervans and motorhomes are able to park overnight for free and are welcomed to do so by the council

Poo bags really do get our goat. We can't understand how they can bother to bag it but then dump it wherever. The ruins are magnificent in size xx

Great video part of my childhood A mostly unknown treasure hidden in the Vale of Nightshade. In my youth the wooden hut was where you entered the Abbey and bought your ticket. It's also where you dumped you're bikes. You went there to play in long summer holidays....not to study medieval architecture lol The streams are what is known locally as the Red Rover, more so downstream in Roose. The tunnel myths belong in the same book as the Black Monk ghost stories. A quick look at the distance to Piel and the fact you'd be tunneling under the sea, and the elevation of Dalton castle up Mill Brow and you soon realise the impossibility of the tunnels ever connecting to either place. But nice boyhood myths and we crawled along many, it was the 1970s H&S pfffft. I'm inclined to agree with you regarding the lichen and air quality. There could have been so much more to see there if the railway station and the station hotel had been maintained. The derelict Abbey Hotel pub is all that's left and it's in a dreadful state last time I went down there.....years ago. Had many good nights drinking in there. Above the Abbey is Abbotswood take the dogs for a stroll. There was a huge Victorian mansion up there also demolished with grand gardens........all gone over to wilderness now which is nice but to see it on its pomp and glory would be something to see too. I've not been in the cafe, opened long after I'd left home but gear good things. As for the Amphitheatre it sits in.....a treasure trove for seventies kids in summer of winter running down it, or sledging in rate snowy times. A video that's brought back many memories in the week of my sixtieth birthday. Simpler times fifty years or so ago. Great video, thanks for giving it the time it deserved ......not a quick ten minutes to maximise algorithm induced views I've written all this while watching, in fact you've just mentioned the hut,🙂 Is there a video planned of Piel Castle in the future you can get the ferry or be bold and walk over from South Walney at low tide. The visitors centre is all new to me too......I said it earlier but thank you for a lovely video to gave my morning brew.

Thanks for sharing your own history of the place Peter. We can just imagine kids sledging down that hill. We were really worried that people would switch off because of the length of this video but it really wouldn't have done justice to the place if we had rushed,and cut out bits that we filmed. Hopefully it will encourage more people to visit. The cafe is worth a visit if you get over that way. Thanks for watching and yes, Piel is on the ever growing list of places to visit. I just need to persuade Keith to either fully retire,or at least reduce the days he works in order to fit everything in. We are off on a 12 day, much needed road trip in October. Wexhave a list of options of where to go, we haven't quite decided yet but we do know that we will head North. Much more to come before then though as we have lots of videos already made to share. I don't really care about the church, as not religious. The craftsmanship of how they used to build is amazing. You don't need the music as the bird song is enough.

We think that more interest in religion comes with age. Churches, cathedrals and abbeys fascinate us,especially the architectural detail in them. These old abbeys are a testament to tge skills of the people who built them. Thanks for watching.
