The first radar system I had the "pleasure" of working on was the SPS-10. C-band and 280kW POP (peak-output-power), I remember there was an interrupter on the power to the magnetron so it wouldn't set off the Kodak flash-cubes on the shopping strip at Great Lakes NTC LOL

I didn’t hear about the echo averaging feature that only Furuno has. That’s the biggest game changing feature I’ve seen on a radar from a bird locating point of view. Virtually cuts all sea clutter out making simple for anyone to locate birds. Birdmode+echo averaging. I’ve located birds 10-12 miles out with a Furuno 25kw x class.

What was the greatest X-Band radar (relative to the time period & technology) that Furuno ever built?

@WharfRatNYC, thanks for your question. This is a tough one to answer, as all of our Radars utilize commercial components to last. We still see Radars from the 1980's/1990's on commercial vessels that are still working. There's a reason that Furuno Radar's continue to win the National Marine Electronics Association award for Best Radar year over year. 😉
