Hi Jim, first of all A Great Big Thank you for your Absolutely Beautiful projects! Second Thank you for your personality and quick and to the point help at what may have caused the crack. Third of all for responding to my email directly to you in less than 24 hours!!!!! Working with a fast firing Jen Ken Bonnie Glo Tall Fiber Kiln........... our first attempt was fine except for the fact that the mold had not arrived yet, and the creation was to small in perimeter. Adding pieces to the perimeter ended up with the thermal stress crack in the clear base which you addressed, My attempting to mend the crack, and slowing down the temp both up and down ended up with a repaired crack but......... let me say a pretty mess. We lost all of the contour detailing, and some mild devrit along the way. also We were extremely careful in cleaning the glass so this was a temp issue But the piece did not have any cracks! The schedule used was: 250F-1000 F ,0 hold. 500F-1385F hold 5 min,, full to 900F, hold 1 1/2 min. 650F to room temp. This took a very long time almost almost 7 hours, but Somehow I screwed this up badly. We will try this again from scratch. would you share your firing schedule again aside from 1365F full ramp, hold for 5 min, Or should I change this for the Fiber Kiln? and also your slumping schedule please. I do not see it following your video? Please give me or us the the newer fiber kilns schedule adjustments to your brick kiln schedules. Using full ramp to 1385 for 5 minutes, and off worked perfectly the first time around so I assume this will be good in our second attempt without adding extra pieces to the perimeter. Now I am concerned about the slumping as the mold we have is very pie plate shaped with scalloped edges measuring 11 3/4 across the top and almost straight down inside sides which are 1 3/4 inches deep. Any help you will give us is greatly appreciated! :)) thank you Vivian
@glasshoppa23267 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry I have no experience with a fiber kiln. I can only give the schedule I used successfully. Both the fusing and slumping schedules are on the Project PDF, which can be found on this page: www.glasshoppa.com/VideoDirectory.html The piece was designed for a bowl-like slump. I can't predict how your mold will work, but I can tell you that “almost straight sides” doesn’t sound like it was designed for glass slumping. Good luck; have fun -

Thank you Jim, mold is for glass. But I have asked for help from Jen Ken to convert your schedules. :))

The birds where I live must not have received the memo about white birdbaths being a danger signal. I try and look for smooth, white bird baths, because that makes it much easier to tell if the water is dirty. Dark colors and mosaics are the worst for seeing dirt. Birds are the only creatures that will see these designs and I doubt they care about the design inside the BB. The crevices around an interior design inside a bowl are also the most likely place for mold to begin growing and these crevices also make it much harder to clean the bowl (If you don't care about dirty water it doesn't matter.) I also keep a tightly wound handle strainer hung-up near the bird bath and use that to clean very minute debris and birdcrap out of the birdbath between changes of the water. (I buy 3 or 4 at a time at the dollar store) I change the water at least once a day. Some species of birds like doves and sparrows will crap in the water on a regular basis. I try and remove it while it is still fresh and intact. I went to a Lowes to buy a birdbath recently and I was very surprised to see that most of them were designed very poorly in my opinion. But I guess a lot of people buying their first birdbaths are novices who are more impressed by aesthetics than the utility of the design(?) I never use my clay/pottery bird baths in the winter. The constant pressure on the sides from freezing ice at night and thawing during daylight will cause these bird baths to disintegrate much sooner than they should. I'm only aware of this because it happened to a neighbor of mine. I use a heated, white, plastic bird birdbath in the winter but I don't fill it up too high because the water on the lip will freeze. I thought the heater had stopped working until realized I was filling it too high. I try an remember to turn it off and empty it at night but sometimes I forget to do this. But I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and people in warmer climates probably don't have to worry about this. WRZ Delaware County, PA
