sorry just a question, i thought the third shell could hold a maximum of 18 electrons and you said 8 electrons at 2:51 . are there certain times where the third shell can only hold a max of 8?
@fuseschool8 жыл бұрын
+Dopper Pinez It can hold 18 - for GCSE level (up until age 16) it is simplified to say 8 because you do not need to learn beyond period 3 in the periodic table. For 18 electrons to be held, the shell is split up into sub-shells/ orbitals, but this is much more details than is necessary for this level of Chemistry,
@zhihao817 жыл бұрын
Because for atom number 21, the next electron will start filling back to shell 3. This will make it confusing for o level or year 10 students.

good answer but this video is kinda for those below 16 and usually the schools teach it as 8 as a standard but actually it’s 18 so you’re correct but this video is just the simplified version
@sumanlata49554 жыл бұрын
Exactly!
@me....16884 жыл бұрын
No that is not what the book mean....it means that 18 is the number of electrones that can be kept in ALL THE ELECTRONES UP TO THE 3RD SHELL.....
@Nocturnal2354 жыл бұрын
@@me....1688 Ray05 is correct. The third shell by itself can hold up to 18 electrons. For example, take a look at Bromine's electronic configuration: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p5.

The atomic number tells you the number of protons not electrons. In the case the atom has a neutral charge the number of protons is the same than the number of electrons, but it is not the case for ionized atoms.
@rajnz7 жыл бұрын
He said in a Neutral atom so that is correct,
@rajnz7 жыл бұрын
Halo Galaxy, Leonso Medina is exactly correct. We don't count the number of electrons because they can be stripped away from an atom, or added to it, to make the atom ionised. The number of electrons and protons are equal only in NEUTRAL atoms.
@sangeetakithani4576 жыл бұрын
you are right
@kichu35816 жыл бұрын
OK
@trevorjefferson48406 жыл бұрын
The video is correct though. He did state in a neutral atom. In a neutral atomic number (which gives/is= the proton number) is equal to the number of electrons. Hence the true statement.
