Well there's a story that is very similar to this one, it is not precisely the same or a "newer version" and the plot is a bit different as well, but it does include a girl recruiting "gods" or beings like that to help her out, and it also takes place in ancient-like asia. Maybe you've heard of it but if you haven't you should check it out, plot is actually really good. It's called Yona of the Dawn. It only has one anime season and I'm not sure if there's plans for a second season, but the manga is still ongoing and it has already about 200 chapters... I highly recommend it!! Literally watching fushigi yuugi reminds me so much of Yona of the Dawn and I get hyped lol I'm just here patiently waiting for the next freaking issue to be released lolol >.< Hope this helps!
