Thank you very much for the best tutorial for Fusion 360 so far I've seen. This helped me to grasp the concepts extremely well. I been fidling with the F360 few days and you answered most of my ' How on earth you do .... ' . You also introduced the parameter entry form that I was not aware of at all. Very cool!

This is a great tutorial. I was getting really concerned I was going to have to redraw everything over and over again. Great explanation of the parameterization and the difference between bodies, components, etc. Made it very clear! Now to make a 13 shelf bookcase!

Thanks so much Paul. I really look forward to watching this whole series. Fusion 360 has been on my list of things to get into, but there just isn't a lot of content online, not to mention someone who has woodworking experience doing the tutorial makes it much more relevant!

Thanks for sharing your experiences Paul. What I love most about CAD is virtual working in 3D and the pleasure it offers. The magic of having something materialise in front of your eyes is so much more satisfying than messing around with parameters and software nuances.

Thanks Paul. This is flyingly fast and I think its just perfect. A lot of people may not fully use the pause, go back and watch again features that a video provide but I did... and followed along with fusion 360 in the background. Really helpful this user parameters stuff and dimensioning. Opens up a whole new world. Thanks again

I've watched a number of vids on Fusion and "getting started". This is by far the best and most useful one and I'm glad I found it early on in my Fusion journey. Building things in a parameterised way from the beginning will be a big plus and you show it really well. You have saved me hours of study/research/learning time. Cheers big ears.

Again very useful. One problem I ran into was constraining the mirrored side so that as parameters change (like the unit width) the mirrored side changes correctly. For this I used a construction plane constrained to the middle of the unit and then mirrored the first side around that construction plane. Worked well. Not sure if there is a better method.

Hi Paul, Thank you! It would be great to see you do a series on the ENTIRE project from start to finish. Starting with the design in Fusion, printing out the cut list, making the actual project (the build) in your shop. Similar to the video you did called, :067 Coffee Table Design Process..." except that you would continue that and show how you proceed AFTER designing in Fusion and using what you did in Fusion to produce the final project, if/when you had to make changes or adjustments to your Fusion design during your build. Did that (what I just wrote) make any sense?? LOL I hope so..... Thanks Paul !!!!

It does make sense but I'll have to find the 'right' project for it. Sufficiently complex projects take too long to design to be able to put into a short Fusion360 video. Maybe a SNES/NES coffee table (coffee table that looks like a controller)?

Pacing on your video was perfect, I'm a raw beginner in Fusion but appreciate seeing what's possible and have no problem pausing the video if I need to. Has anyone noticed that the distance between shelves ( heigth of the space between shelves) is 300mm at the bottom only, the next 3 spaces are 281mm (because materialThickness is substracted from shelfHeight)and the top space is 338mm. In case of 7 shelves the top space is 376mm high, others remain the same. But lets say that you want all internal spaces(distances) between shelves to be 300mm high. First you have to modify user parameter of bookcaseheight to: ( shelfheight + materialthickness ) * shelfcount + materialthickness then in the rectangular pattern window under Distance Type choose: spacing option. The quantity box remains the same: shelfcount-1. Then below modify distance to: shelfheight+materialthickness

BODMAS without brackets is the same as saying MaterialThickness * ShelfCount THEN adding ShelfHeight onto that. ie 12 * 5 = 60. +100 = 160 With brackets changes it to MaterialThickness + ShelfHeight THEN multiplying that by ShelfCount ie 12+100 = 112 *5 = 560

Great video and introduction to parameters! It may have just been me, but I don't believe the shelf space opening was equal. This seemed to work for me: The BookCaseHeight parameter needs to be: (ShelfHeight + MaterialThickness ) * ShelfCount + MaterialThickness The Rectangular pattern should be: ( ShelfHeight + MaterialThickness ) * ( ShelfCount - 2 ) The original parameters didn't accommodate for the material thickness for the very top shelf. Also, the rectangular pattern wasn't calculating the material thickness of each shelf.

Wish I read this before racking my brain trying to figure this out. It really bugged me too. I came to the same solution as you. Only difference is I used an extra parentheses just for visual separation. ((ShelfHeight + MaterialThickness ) * ShelfCount) + MaterialThickness. But if you know your order of operations really well this wont make a difference.

This is a stupid question but... In My version of fusion (which I realize is years later than the one in this video) the Grid values seem to have flipped. IE extruding by BookCaseDepth extrudes backwards away from the sketch rather then forward from the sketch. Is there a way to adjust this in the settings? Conceptually I like the way it functions in the video. Makes sense to have the sketch behind everything. I could just use a "-300" instead of a Positive "300", But if there is a simple setting to change this that would be amazingly convenient. Overall great video though. I really like the design flow this is teaching

@9:10 he says we select a direction but skips how that button actually works, you select the directions mouse pointer from the rectangular pattern window and then select an edge to get the direction you want to drag the shelves and in this case select inner side edge of the book case wall not the top at least in my case it wont calculate correctly if you select a top edge for direction @16:13 make sure to change the square pattern tool back to component @ 17:09 you put a champher on which then applys that chamber to the back faces as well when it shouldnt because that is just a mirrored component, I am not sure how to get around this using mirrored components EDIT: Some changes I can offer after playing around for a bit Set bookcaseHeight to ShelfHeight*shelfcount(MaterialThickness *2) for even shelf spacing on all shelves When you do the rectangular patturn set distance type to spacing and distance to ShelfHeight again for even spacing, make sure your joinery has the same calculations to match now your drawing wiill have uniform spacing in the drawing for shelves

@TheWoodKnight 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think its worth the time to model certain types of joinery - dowels (unless you're CNC'ing), dominos and pocket holes are all an example. They're essentially all butt joints, so you don't need to add/subtract any measurements from the dimensions.

Paul Jenkins in the case of pockets screws I wasn’t thinking of so much altering the size or shape of any existing model bodies, but rather just a mark or symbol on the drawing to indicate their location, direction and spacing. Given that the drawings would be scaled down, I’m unsure what a possible solution might be since scaling would also scale the markings and making them difficult to see. Do you have any suggestions? I would be able to figure out where to put the pocket screws. However, to be able to provide such simplified instructions to my nephew and his dad would be awesome! I appreciate the response and any ideas you might have for this. Thanks!
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 6 жыл бұрын
The truth is I don't have a perfection solution for you. One option you could do is make a circle in your model for each screw location - doesn't really matter what size, but for arguments, lets say 3/8" (9.5mm) as thats what the pockethole bit is. Doesn't have to be more than 0.01mm extruded "in" to the object that'll get the pockethole. On the drawings, that would, as you said, give you a very small marker, but its 'something'. From there (in the drawing), you can go Geometry -> Centre Point, which does give a highlighted 'target'. Centre Point requires a radiused edge or circle, hence the initial modelling of the 'pockethole'. Would that be adequate?

A lot of good info here, but you have a few things to learn about parameters still. Copy paste values of parameters is unnecessary, the value of a parameter can be the name of a parameter. At 12:30... instead of copying the value of d25 to d31, you could enter d25 as the value of d31. Same with d27/d33

How long have you been using this software and did you just learn by doing or some kind of short course/tutorial? Hi Paul. Nice video, really helped me with a few Fusion 360 concepts as I get started with it. One thing I wondered about was creating the joints... you simply cut a dado... but what about other types of joints? Would appreciate an example with tenon or slot joins. Thx.
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what a slot joint is (cross lap?) but mortise and tenon joints are modelled very similarly to dados. You model a square on the end of a piece, extrude to create the tenon, cut to create the mortise. In theory it'd be possible to create a script to do it, but I'm not familiar with the Fusion360 languages.

Sorry I'm probably using the wrong terms. For my first project I am using LASER cut MDF. So I need the parts to join together with 'fingers' pointing out on some sheets which fit into holes in the other parts; meeting at 90 degrees. So rather than a cut all the way along at half depth it would have rectangular fingers poking through. Please correct my poor terminology!

Ah. Laser/CNC cut joinery are different from traditional joinery, I think its typically called "tab joinery" or even "dog bone joinery" (and there are plugins for the latter). "Digital manufacturing" isn't really my area of knowledge, sorry!

I find your tutorial far better than the last commenter, but I must say, that there are some places in the presentation, that things just seem to appear with no real explanation of what you did to get there. For example, in the first sketch, you create the rectangle which will ultimately be extruded to bookCaseDepth; then without any explanation, you seem to be extruding the top and the bottom, and ultimately two sides - however, it is not at all easy to see where the heck those last three rectangles came from. Some slow down might be called for.

I just started using Fusion 360 and these videos are very helpful, but isn't the spacing between the shelves wrong? If i want 30cm of space between each shelf, that ain't gonna happen with that method, or am I missing something? Then first shelf sits 30cm above the bottom surface, but the rest are a couple of cm's short. Yes, they are evenly spread, but not 30cm, as I thought the point of it was. Can someone direct me to a formula/parameter that spaces them perfectly even?

I had a similar issue, I must have missed it in the video, but figured it out. In the R-Patten section for Distance I wrote this formula. Works for me, although I admit it may be masking an issue with another place in my drawing. ( MaterialThickness + ShelfHeight ) * ( ShelfCount - 2 )

Is there a particular reason that you do not use joints instead of manually moving the components into place? On another note, I dig how you are using F360 for woodworking.
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 7 жыл бұрын
A few reasons: * Joints are probably more of an advanced concept than 101. * For modelling furniture, sometimes they're useful, sometimes they can be more hassle than its worth when the design still fluctuates a bit. * I'm not particularly proficient with them. Do you know of any good reasons covering the uses of joints for this sort of application? I'd love to get rid of reason #3!

I was thinking maybe just use them as a quicker way to align them. I suppose if you model stuff with hinges, locks etc it would be more beneficial. I really like how you use the parametric options of Fusion. It shows how powerful it can be.

Why not name your calculations as a parameter then reuse the single parameter in multiples locations instead of copying the calc to multiple locations? Are nested parameters disallowed?

All the people who praised this video obviously understood how the top and bottom and back were supposed to be joined. All could think of was that they are meant to be either glued or nailed, which is bit crap, so I would appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction. Many thanks.

@TheWoodKnight 5 жыл бұрын
Backs are often nailed or screwed on to cabinets and book cases, sometimes in a rabbet, sometimes not. The top and bottom could be screwed, doweled, dominoed, or biscuited on. This isn't a 100% "how to do all sorts of joinery" video. Nor do you have to model 100% of your joinery - use whatever techniques you feel is best in the workshop

I had a problem with the shelves having a larger space at the top and could not work it out until I went through part 03, Creating a Drawing. When I put the dimensions in, everything became obvious. Here is my solution. First of all, I understand a shelf to be a different thing from the top and bottom of a bookcase. Therefore, my parameter, "shelfCount" was set to 4. Also, having spent time computer programming, I cannot handle seeing specific numbers instead of parameter names, so I introduced new parameters, "bookcaseWidth = 500mm" and "shelfWidth". More on that later. My bookcase has the dimensions of bookcaseHeight by bookcaseWidth. The bookcaseHeight is incorrect. There are five gaps and six crosspieces. bookcaseHeight becomes, "(shelfHeight + materialThickness) * (shelfCount + 1) + materialThickness" which is 1614mm. The objects; "Top" & "Bottom", have the dimensions, "materialThickness" by "bookcaseWidth - (materialThickness * 2)". The parameter, "shelfWidth" is given the same formula as "Top" and "Bottom". Later on when the rebates (or dados) are cut, I can change shelfWidth to the formula, "bookcaseWidth - materialThickness" instead of extruding. Having created my first shelf, I want to create 3 more above it. Three gaps and three shelves. My formula for the Rectangular Pattern is, (shelfHeight + materialThickness) * (shelfCount -1)".

At 15:12 couldn't you have adjusted your shelf width parameter to fill the space you made when you created the dado? Obviously you didn't include the dadoes in your design to begin with so you could demonstrate more features of Fusion 360. If you did increase your shelf width to include the dado the combine feature makes quick work of cutting the material from the bookshelf sides. This is demonstrated in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIu4kH2mrt6Wa68 and seems to be a great tool for working in a parametric work space. Thanks for the videos. They are very informative!

Overall you deserve a big thanks for posting a tutorial but there is some good and some bad here. Lots of good information, but you keep skipping little things here and there that an introduction should have. @7:33 you have to hit D to use the dimension tool so you can enter your shelf dimension. I had to find that information somewhere else after watching that part of your video a bunch of times.

The very top shelf - as in the 'top' piece that forms the outer box? No, that is not a patterned piece, it is not taken into account with the formula as its not a 'shelf'. Its part of the outside structure.

I just licensed fusion 360 -and find it very confusing. Current tutorials from Autodesk (fusion mastery) seem to be from an older version - and do not work correctly with the version of 360 they provided. They have four lessons just on opening and saving a file. Thus I am seeking a reasonable tutorial to get started to simply draw a dimensioned object. I currently use sketch-up and just wanted to try fusion 360 to draw out a cigar humidor and get it built. With respect to your video - I have a lot of trouble following you with this tutorial. After the first 30-40 seconds you begin to click and type and move very very quickly. Sometimes your explanation of what you are doing happens before and sometimes afterwards your actions - making it very difficult to follow. An example is the bookshelf spacing portion of the video. After watching it twice - I still am unclear as to a simple way to evenly space the shelves. Because you illustrated so many methods, and made mistakes while doing it - it is not clear how I would actually simply and easily - step by step, evenly space the shelves with any method. Second the voice volume level changes as you go through the video making it more difficult to follow. Lastly - for some reason all of your keystrokes appear on the left hand side of the screen flashing in and scrolling out - distracting the viewer from the drawing and mouse movements and menu selections. Many of the symbols etc that appear in your keystroke tracker are not well known so we cannot follow that either. What is clear from the video is you are really good with this tool - and if I had a tenth of your skill I would be a master with what I need to do with it.

I’ve seen other better for beginner tutorial. You’re going to fast. And I have made a couple of tutorial already. Content is good tho. But you should explain more why you do this, what this commande does, etc. I know the constraint and parameters thing, but I’m sure not everyone can follow you going this quick over essential info like this. Edit: I thumbed up this video anyway, cause the info is good

I’m new to this software. All other tutorials seem to be for 3D printing. I was excited to see a woodworking one. You flew through too many steps without explaining what you were doing or why you were doing it. Like “click click click click” “see that box I just made” “click click” “now it’s gone” in a 1.5 second time period. Slow down!!

Everyone saying this was a wonderful tutorial however from the perspective of a guy who's never used this particular type of program before with the parameters and all that stuff this is a horrible tutorial. Typing and clicking around WAY too fast to follow along. I guess I'll revert to learning on my own because trying to watch this is nothing short of frustration.

You're too fast. Were it not so, the same comment wouldn't have been made by *many* people. And responding with an attitude because someone tells you you're going too fast is just childish. Get over yourself. You may know the software extremely well, but that doesn't make you a great teacher... or a great producer of KZbin instructional videos. The content may be free to us, but you aren't making it out of the kindness of your heart. Get real. This is about you making money on KZbin.

Plenty have commented the speed was fine, plenty have discovered how to use the playback speed controls and how to pause/rewind. I am not a professional at this, I'm not paid by autodesk, and I don't have any formal training in either teaching or Fusion 360. I was, as one hobbyist to another, trying to help others. The monetary "rewards" from youtube for it certainly don't make it worth it. But thank you Scott, you've well and truly made my day with this pleasant discourse.
@bemccune7671
@bemccune7671 5 жыл бұрын
@Scott- Were you trying to follow along and get it done in real time? Because that's not the way to do it. Watch all the way through, maybe even twice without even touching the software. Then the next time through, pause the video at each step just long enough to repeat the exact action he did in the video. Works for me and I've hardly touched fusion before. This is kind of the rule of thumb for learning from video in general.
