Thanks for checking them out. That was the purpose i created the channel for! There aren't any modal tracks that give you a chance to practice long and hard on each key, rather than changing chords every 2 bars! Have Fun

Thanks for listening and commenting! All my tracks are produced and played by myself ;-) This one the bass turned out really fun, i tried to change what the bass was doing, for each key. I'm still working out some details on getting better bass tones for recording, but it's a fun trial and error process. Hopefully each track i produce, i will learn more from it to put toward future tracks. If you ever want to hear a specific type of track, key, mode, chord progressions, let me know :-)

The tracks are great for practicing! One thing that might help noobs like me would be to show the caged form of each scale when the track changes to help give a starting point for that mode. Thanks for creating these!

Thanks for the feedback! I considered that option, and then i also noticed that even though i personally LOVE the caged system, there are a few haters, so i don't want to give the impression that my way is the only way ;-). What i can do is do up some shapes, and ad the links to them in the information section. Would that be helpful?

The mixolydian scale is the classic storyteller mode. "Listen up, people." A little sentimental, as if going back in time.

This is fairly true, except that minor thirds only, would get you 4 keys going in a circle. C Eb Gb A C Eb Gb A, etc. So for this Track the order (as is posted in the info ;-) is Minor 3rd, Minor 3rd, Minor 3rd, Major 3rd, and then the same thing over, 2 more times, resulting in 12 keys. yay!

So for the Bb/C chord, you'll want to find a fingering that allows a Bb or Bb9 chord, while having a C bass note. That isn't 100% neccesary though, just for practice. If your playing with the track, the Bass player (me ;-) already has the bass note covered, so you can just jam the main chord, and not worry about the slash note.

good idea. most backing tracks focus on one key which is fine. however making a small step forward is to be able to switch to a different key and keep soloing.

Sure thing brotha, The chords used are 'slash' chords, which means you'll have a chord named, but a different bass note. So for mixolydian I used the One chord and the 7 chord. While keeping the root note as bass. Look at the onscreen scale to help! Ok? For example, with C Mixolydian, C is the One chord (C9 if you want it to be a bit funky), and Bb/C is the 7 chord (or Bb9 if you want to funk that one up as well) So the one and seven chord of each mixolydian scale, is the chord progression.

I liked this so much I re-edited and posted it for Bb instruments - so I and others could use it for sax and clarinet practice. - I hope that's ok with you. I credit and thank you in the comments.

Any "method to your madness" Jonathan choosing the key changes, other than moving in ascending 4ths "direction"; Starting at C and with minor 3rd skips with the two major 3rd skips between A to C#, Bb to D?? Very cool track!

Thanks for watching! I've always liked the change of a major or dom7 chord going up a minor 3rd, as occurs in "Rock Island Rocket" by Tom Scott and the L.A. Express. However, if you continue up purely in Minor 3rds, you would only progress through 4 keys over and over. So i had to do a major 3rd at those locations in order to achieve all 12 keys.

Very cool, but more heads up on the chord changes would have made smooth transitions more possible.

i'm self teaching, 2years now, im not looking at the key but playing by ear and then when it shifts i'm not able to go straight to the root (unless i shift i end up at its 4th alot then i just switch the 7th ) but in the position i'm in the interval positions change i can play the right intervals in key but am not fully aware which intervals i'm playing until i play a few,. some times i think i'm in the right place but then a 7th doesnt fit then i realise im playing mixo in the major position. shall i keep doing this or do some proper eartraining. i suppose i need to be pitch perfect to get every note bang on first time.

Basically for each key, you want the notes of that mixo scale to 'light up' your fret board for you. I personally use the CAGED scale system so that no matter where i am on the fret board, i have access to the notes of the scale that i need. Theory will always improve your improvising as well :-). Let me know if you need a hand.

hey, is it possible for you to make backing tracks for all scales including blues, pentatonic and jazz? totally understand that it is a lot of work and do not expect you to, but if you're keen to that would be great :) good job on all this so far !!

Hey Maddy! Perhaps it might be a good time for you to work on some music theory within your question. You see, all the diatonic modes, are made up of 3 pentatonic scales each, which is why i created tracks that would cater to most scales! For Example, If you want to practice the A minor Pentatonic or Blues scale, you would go to my A Dorian Track, or A Aeolian Track to start with. Both the A Dorian and Aeolian scale contain the notes of the A Minor pentatonic scale, making it a great real-world example of where you could apply the Pent and Blues Scale. If you get really keen, after that you can learn what other pentatonic scales are contained within Each Modal Scale! To get you started, i will give you a clue.... In the A Dorian Scale, you can find the Am pentatonic scale, Bm pentatonic scale, and the Eminor pentatonic scale. Therefore, over an A dorian jam track, you can practice Am pent, Bm pent, Eminor pent, and Am blues, along with your A dorian scale as well of course. Please let me know if you have any questions, as well i am available for lessons on Skype if you are interested.
