Final manufacturing steps of Europe's Toroidal Field coils for ITER perfomed at SIMIC (IT).

Europe is responsible for 10 of the Toroidal Field coils which will create a massive magnetic cage to confine the hot plasma of ITER- the biggest fusion device. There are several steps in the fabrication of each of these complex magnets which measure 17 x 9 m and weigh 320 tonnes each- as much as an Airbus A350. When powered with current (68 000 A) their magnetic field will reach up to 11.8 Tesla-about 250 000 times the magnetic field of the Earth!
