Pavel joins us today to discuss KODI - a software that gives you control of your television. It acts a lot like ROKU but is privacy and freedom-focused.
Are there any other aspects of your tech life can we help you take back control of? Are there programs that fit in with our vision that you think we should know about? Let us know in the comments!

Came to this channel from the sponsor/shoutout from Kino Corner. Got baited into watching this video because of Misato. And you know what? I'm fucking happy that I did. Tech rights and ownership is a huge problem and I am glad to see a project that is aimed at helping people understand what is wrong in the current system and how to avoid it. I think it is especially important to have it laid out for a layman like you do, because there are many channels who go into huge depths and technical details, which while good, assume a certain level of knowledge and experience from the viewer. I will be following this project from now on and wish you guys all the best in spreading this message

Futo should be fighting the outrageous copyright laws that were bribed into existence by corporations. It is completely illogical for a company, a fake existence, a figment of imagination, to own IP rights. A company is an invention itself, it doesn't have any sentience or intelligence so how come a company is allowed to own copyrights. This is the root of all the troubles. An inventor, a creator an artist, a human being is the only one capable of holding rights, and they should not be allowed to sell them. If person X invents something it is theirs forever and listed in history after hundreds and thousands of years after they pass, as the inventors. That person X should be able to license to various companies or other individuals based on limited term contracts (max 5 years) rights of use so that it allows competition and fair market to exist. At the end of the natural life of that person X, the invention/creation/art becomes freeware, open source for human society to progress. This is the basis of progress and has been in all human history. But from the XXth century AD and even worse now in the XXI century AD, with more and more copyrights over anything and everything we see a major break in progress and in fact we are going backwards, because copyright holders are strangling progress. Case in point. We would not have anything if copyrights were a thing from the very early ways of humanity. Imagine the caveman that invented the wheel would simply bash in the head anyone else that used his idea. Or the first one that thought of farming. Only he could farm and no others would be allowed. This is what the current level of copyrights laws has created. And in fact nobody in the present should be allowed to copyright stuff because everythign today is created as derivative of something that was made in the past. Furthermore the notion of pirating is abysmal. Companies that claim others are pirating their stuff are in fact themselves doing the same thing, selling the same thing over and over, duplicating it. And if you buy the digital product from them, you don't have any ownership rights over that digital good that you purchased. Like a movie. You buy a movie on a dvd, you own it, it's yours. No-no, the movie creators don't like that. It's just a license to view in their bs opinion. Ok, then the price to buy the dvd is like 1 usd at most and for the viewing rights of the movie 1 cent and not 15 usd or more (as they charge for a dvd movie) This is the aspect that needs to be debunked and removed. If you buy something and pay the buying price, then you own it and you can do whatever you want if you posses the knowledge and tools. How about all the people that are building houses on their own?! Aren't the contruction companies upset that people make their own houses instead of paying the company?! Yes they are, but it is illegal for them to do anything. Hope i made my point and Futo gets moving into fighting the abusive copyright laws that are the root of all these problems. It all started from digital creators (movies, music, etc in the laste XXth century, spreading to software creators and then to physical products) You buy but you don't own and are even more, used as a resource for them to make money of your life. How about, they pay the users 20 usd per each view they count. I mean, i would have no problem to see my time to a marketing company to track my activity WHEN I WANT THEM TO for a cost they must pay me for the data i give them.

I have been using Kodi for years on my media streamer to stream movies from my computer for the most part. But there really is so much more to do on it. I love it

my new amazon fire tv is truly despotic. functions like HDMI-CEC cease to work unless you sign into an amazon account. my workaround to make it a dumb tv is a burner amazon account and pi-hole to kill whatever tracking may be occurring.

What about the approach of using the raspberry pi as a DNS instead, and blocking any http requests to 'bad' endpoints, using something like Pi Hole.

Yes it's possible to set up bind to do that. I blackhole most ad A records and redirect it to a blank page so that garbage ads don't eat up CPU time while browsing the internet. It's not perfect though.

Running your own resolver can be a bit more private as well because you're not talking to your ISP's resolver. I vaguely remember my ISP years ago redirecting me to their data usage article when I was near exhausting my data cap.

I've used it a few times in the past. The biggest problem with this amazing app is accessibility. This is one of the worst I've ever seen and seems to can't give feedback on issues like captions, for example. Please fix it for once!

I love and support the FUTO movement. That being said, get your talking points together and check over your script/talking points so you don't get the whole movement sued into oblivion. Slander is a huge deal and will fuck this movement up if you aren't smart about it.

This video is pretty flawed. Lean less on privacy and more on the fact that smart TVs are poorly maintained, slow, and would work better with an external Apple TV/Roku whatever device. At that point, the smart TV features sound like a waste of money.
