Island of Futuna, Pacific Ocean - site of last cannibalism in Futuna island, Pacific Ocean. Let's travel to the remote island of Futuna in the South Pacific Ocean and let's visit the world's last historic site where cannibalism was practiced until 1868. This is the world's last existing cannibalism site that can be visited and it is treated with religious respect, watch the video and you will learn quite a bit about it.
We are visiting Futuna which is an 80 km2 (30 sq mi) island with a population of 3,225 and a maximum elevation of 500 m (1,600 ft) in the Pacific Ocean, belonging to the French overseas collectivity of Wallis and Futuna. It is one of the Hoorn Islands or Îles Horne, nearby Alofi being the other. They are both a remnant of an old extinct volcano, now bordered with a fringing reef.
Futuna is where Pierre Chanel was martyred in 1841, becoming Polynesia's only Catholic saint. The cathedral of Poi now stands on the site where he was martyred.
Futuna takes its name from an endonym derived from the local futu, meaning fish-poison tree.

This is absolutely correct!!! Man you’re awesome Vic!!! There is a place in Tonga called ‘Umu Tangata (The Man Oven) where warriors were taken after they were killed and they were cooked and eaten. It was believed that their power (ivi) was possessed by the consumer. All manner of other dark magic rituals were performed at the time. To this day people refer to ‘Umu Tangata as a geographical location. Almost a sense of pride for Tongans knowing you come from such notorious places. However cannibalism took place all over the islands and in Tonga each village or island is notorious for some type of savage nature back in those days. At night, no one ventures off on their own because places like this existed in all manner of locations and paranormal activity is very prevalent to this day. Thanks for sharing your video!!!!

I heard stories of cannibal feasts in Tonga. It was before decending upon another fortress. Some Tonga warriors would roast their enemies alive.Tonga islands especially Ha'apai were accustomed to the practices of Fiji where they would frequent for adventure. In old Tonga way before the days of Ma'afu, war trips to Fiji earned the most recognition for bravery.

Hello Vic, hope you're doing well there! Thank you for upload this video of "Fai 'UMU" in 'Asoa (Through Vele village). Not really sure about the period you've mentionned that this "Fai 'UMU" has been served or times of cannibal practice. This traditionnal cannibal "oven" has been made in times of SAUTA'O reign, the man-eating Chief in this village. So, it should be before 1868 period because, after 1841 (year which St. Peter Chanel came in Futuna with the Catholicism) cannibalism no longer existed. I'm not sure about SAUTA'O period of reign, but it was before 1868! Maybe in the 16th century. Just amazing how you've described this video, and this beautiful place of'ASOA. Greetings from Futuna!

There was a french crew that was eaten when they landed in a'asu in tutuila in the 1700s, though they were warned multiple times i heard to stay out by the locals, cannibalism was banned in samoa during the reign of Mālietoa Uilamatutu, after his son Polualeuligana had given his life in place of 2 other men who were chosen to be uilamatutu, he had cut a banana leaf told them to kill him and prepare his body for the umu and present his body to his father in said banana leaf, to which they did, and when they presented the banana leaf to malietoa he asked what it was to which they said, "It is fish, sacred, only for the chief" and when he opened up the banana leaf he cried out in horror as his dead cooked soon was staring at him from the lau fa'i, since then he declared cannibalism forbidden, though in tutuila we still practiced cannibalism, there was a infamous cannibal chief named Tuife'au/Tuisamoa, though he was killed by two men from upolu i believe because he still ate humans even though the malietoa banned it, there is a malae in auā named malae pa'epa'eulupo'o which was heavily decorated by human skulls of Tuife'ai victims, i think there is a song also with a reference to him and his faleulupo'o (House of skulls)

Awesome videos Vic...this is just one many sites that exist around the Pacific. This is probably the only one that's well advertised by the locals of Futuna. I know for a fact that my homeland of Fiji is covered with such sights but because we dont eat humans anymore due to Faith we dont talk about it or traverse these sacred sights as such for they are tabu to even set foot on. I know for a fact that many of my Pacific neighbors are quite similar in their stance regarding the dark ages of our history.

@VicStefanu...The theme of this video is quite unconventional, to say the least. Could it be that some form of this unorthodox (to the Christian, certainly) ritual is covertly practiced somewhere unbeknownst to authorities? After all, centuries old practices may be so well habituated that they're difficult to abandon.
@VicStefanu

+Jay Young I do not think that cannibalism is practiced anywhere in the Pacific anymore (barring criminal cases, of course). It was such a special place to find and to learn about it, I have covered many historical places in my life but this one makes it to the list of top 10... In order to understand this site, one needs to know so much about the practice (ie., cannibalism) and then the history of this practice around the Pacific... I enjoyed making this video, to say the least...
