In this video I show you how to Air-layer using the ring bark method.
I decided to use root powder as it is a difficult species.
All you need is:
Sharp Knife
Stagnant Moss
Cling film
Couple off cuts of wire.

Mate the air layer you have just taking is bigger than my aureum I have just brough to add to my collection 😀..lovely acer and you lucky to have a big one to work on..I'm looking forward to a update in a few months I hope for success..I'm planning to do a few airlayers on my older acers soon..thanks.

Thank you Randall! Glad your as passionate about this acer as I am. The Leaves maybe a little big for small bonsai but a stunning plant! Just nurture yours I brought this about 10 years ago. It was a pencil thickness then and I paid about 30 quid for it expensive then for a young lad haha. I spent 10 years working in a garden centre and look around then all the time you see very few of these! I took 3 layers off this one to balance the tree as it’s grown fairly unchecked. Il keep you updated for sure.

I have a large one of these in the garden just outside my front window. Lovely tree. I found it responds very slowly to my efforts to air layer and tends to callous over instead - I believe that may be because the moss is remaining too wet. Still, I persist 😁

I hear your frustration Jason :D but I’m the sort of guy that happily watch’s over cedar airlayers for 3 years and got them off in the end! In all fairness this I’m expecting to be a tricky one that may not even like it’s own roots or just wilt off but the trees got to a size where a few branches layered rather than cut and wasted to balance the tree might end with a bonus! I had the problems you describe with a paper bark maple had to go in each spring and cut the calluses snake bark maple can be the same. I think your right there tho lean on drier Side of most or maybe a Japanese soil mix in a pot with more attentive watering. But these aren’t out the race yet :p
