I like how people keep saying the extra space in these concepts can be used to increase comfort by giving back legroom and seat space. We all know that what will really happen is the airlines will take that extra space, cram it full of more seats, and possibly take away some of the existing legroom we still have even more.

Yes but also no. Kinda depends on the way demand goes. If you're flying because you have to or on a budget its all about the lowest price. Right now the options are pretty limited if you want more comfort. You can't really go get a private jet. However if you can offer people the same price ticket as a conventional jet with way more comfort they will be willing to shell out 100 extra dollars

@@andrewyork3869The Way SUGAR VOLT works is that a hybrid system is integrated into the two onboard engines so that during take off, the electric drive can assists the traditional fuel powered turbine and in the air, the fuel burning part of the engine can lessen its load with the hybrid electric drive driving the turbofan with the fuel burning core only lighting up when necessary to save fuel. As both systems are integrated into both engines, it’s never actually carrying around extra unused engines, it’s simply using a hybrid system to determine the delivery levels to both the electric and fuel burning sections of the engines. So it’s really not carrying any extra weight, or at least not enough to offset the fuel savings resulting from the hybrid drive system.

To name an example of the type of engineering challanges associated with these concepts, most BWBs (the Boeing one most certainly) have very poor static stability, and therefore, to meet requiments, extensive reliance on computer stabilization is needed. This approach made sense when these concepts were first envisioned, as everyone assumed future planes will rely extensively on computers. Today, I'd say having planes that rely extensively on MCAS with steroids, seems farther away now than it was in the past...

The problem with batteries when flying airplanes is the fact that when they deplete .... you still carry the massive extra weight to lug around. This will reduce efficiency drastically. Right now, you carry 10 tons of jet fuel (or however much you need for your trip) and you actually burn it, causing the weight of the plane to be drastically reduced during flight thus allowing for efficient operation. Dragging really heavy empty batteries around (no matter how short or long is your trip) will probably offset the benefits of electric engines by a whole lot. The possible outcome is that the plane would have to carry a lot less passengers given its size, the tickets will be expensive and it would likely be just a "luxury" experience for a select few.

The Bird of Prey design was more or less in my previous designs at Kerbal Space Program. I used to attach lifter wings(servos or elevons) back on back instead of a large wing and a small servo, in order to reach higher speeds and have less drag while having most control. Resulting say, 4 elevons working oppositely, say 2 pairs lifting up, while 2 pairs giving downforce, with one up-one down setting, the craft avoids the need of additional airbrakes since the drag is sufficient to slow down. Another 500kg advantage minimally. Glad to see some business bosses dropping into idea.

More on that, by designing craft that has enough control, and giving slight symmetrical bend to the wings eliminates the need of vertical wingtail. Much or less like Bayraktar airstrike drones.

Very interesting video, good summary of futuristic designs. As a part of my MSc in Aircraft Design I worked on a project similar to the Boeing Sugar Volt. An important issue it had was with the landing gear design, particularly its stowage since the high wing location deprived the design of a “natural” place to retract the landing gear into in the wings.

@jibeneyto913 жыл бұрын
@@primeanomalous4275 Hello, good point! To be honest, speed is not a concern these days. In fact, many of these new concepts trade a bit of speed for a lot more efficiency. The rationale is that even if the aircraft cruise speed is 10% lower, your trip time will mostly not be affected because most of the time of your journey is spent commuting to/from airports, in the airports and waiting around rather than flying. Also, if we wanted to cross the transonic regime into supersonic flight, efficiency goes through the window and costs through the roof.
