What does the future hold. This is a question that is asked daily by millions of people. But this is not a question that can be contained to the present. We as historians have amazing powers of hindsight to look at the past with. This is great for understanding the past, but it also means that we are limited in the realistic stories we can construct from the past. So in this series I will be making alternate histories from the perspective of people from the past. I will base my analysis on just the situation in the year and place I choose, ignoring any event that cannot be reasonable predicted from that starting year and location.
In this first video we will be looking at what the future of Europe may have looked like from the perspective of Britain in 1938. 1938 was a crucial year thanks to the Sudeten crisis. In our timeline the allies gave in to Germany, but Germany kept demanding more and more, leading to war. But from the British perspective in 1938, was this the clear future?

With these kinds of predictions, I'd suggest also adding a Actual Probability rating for them at the end. The French one was very probable because none of the factors involved were unchangeable and there was a lot of time for the situation to change. The Americas could remain undiscovered for perhaps another century, the Hapsburgs might not get lucky with Spain/Burgundy, the Reformation could pan out differently/later, etc. But with Germany, it's completely improbable. Even if you factor out ideological imperatives, the economic cost of rearmament and the Ponzi scheme the Nazis built to sustain it meant that plundering other countries was the only way forward other than collapse. This wouldn't be apparent to a Brit in 1938, but it was there and it couldn't be changed inside of one year.

@@justaplayer94 the idea of the treaty of Versailles being harsh is a complete joke for people that cannot think past the end of their nose.You can only call something harsh, by comparison to other things that have happened.If you compare the treaty with any other reckoning, whether official or unofficial in history for similar situations, then the only reckoning that was more lenient than the Treaty of Versailles, in history, was the reaction to France after the Napoleonic wars when the French must have been ecstatic with how they got away with so much. Germany were very lucky not to have their industrial base completely taken away and then 10 times more lucky that it didn't happen after the Second World War.Right now, Germany is the luckiest nation ever to have existed, in a practical sense

Very interesting! Ww1 was definitely the nail in the coffin when it came to the British empire as we think of it, but ww2 was what truly killed Britain as a world power
@ub3rfr3nzy94
@ub3rfr3nzy94 Жыл бұрын
I think the US becoming allies is what did it. Before the second World War, America was still not trusted (rightfully so) and so the dominions might not have felt safe without the protection of the Empire, specifically Canada, who probably would have fought for the empire to stay united in case of that threat.
@bendackins7211
@bendackins7211 Жыл бұрын
@@ub3rfr3nzy94 yes, post ww1, a main reason Britain’s influence loosened was that the dominions felt more comfortable looking outside of the UK exclusively for protection, however the situation wasn’t hopeless and Britain still could have reasonably hoped to remain the one with the biggest influence over them. However the reason that many of the dominions drifted away from Britain entirely after ww2 was that Britain could quite literally no longer afford to protect them. They were entirely broke. It’s the reason they willingly accepted the terms in Marshall plan that demanded decolonisation. They desperately needed the money, and on a large scale the majority of their colonies, especially the African ones, were running at a loss anyway. Britain had run out of the collective money, political capital, and will to be a world power. Two world wars so close to home had finally broken the camels back as it were

Very interesting video Mr Potential. Sometimes brief periods of cynicism (early 20s right after WW1 in the US) and optimism (peace in our time) get forgotten due to being in the middle of more memorable periods, and this definitely seems to be one, especially amongst the Americans. I think a Soviet perspective from this time period could be interesting, given that many in the USSR at the time (At least those not in Ukraine or targetted by purges) had a sort of optimism for world socialism at that point.

I think this is one of your best videos. Maybe your presentation of Chamberlain’s world view in 1938 is too self-assured. I suspect he was improvising a lot, like a juggler running out of hands. He was trying - unsuccessfully - to avoid disaster, rather than operating with a clear plan for the UK’s future. It’s also important to remember that he was operating under severe constraints. In particular: 1) The British public was overwhelmingly opposed to war, and this attitude only changed after Hitler took the whole of Czechoslovakia. This limited Chamberlain’s room for manoeuvre. 2) In the three-way bidding war between the Entente (UK plus France), Germany and Soviet Russia, the Entente had the weakest hand, and Chamberlain knew this. Both Germany and Russia lost territory at the end of WW1, and both were therefore revisionist powers wanting to reverse Versailles. That’s why something like Molotov-Ribbentrop was always likely. That pact divided Poland and Romania between Germany and the USSR, and gave the Baltic states and Finland to the USSR (though the Soviets proved unable to fully conquer Finland). It was impossible for Chamberlain to offer Hitler or Stalin a more generous deal in Eastern Europe than they could offer each other. And anyway, neither the UK nor France had any soldiers in Eastern Europe. 3) There was a strategy which might have worked for Chamberlain, though it was almost impossible for a democratically elected leader to pull off, and it would have been loudly condemned as cynical and immoral by Chamberlain’s political opponents. If the Entente had told Hitler they were going to re-arm and reinforce their western border with Germany, but they didn’t care at all what happened to the lands to Germany’s east, they might have pushed him to launch a version of Barbarossa already in 1940, with Western Europe still unconquered. They could then attack Germany later, at a moment of their choosing. However, it’s only with hindsight that we can see the viability of such a plan. Another point to consider… Chamberlain compared the Czech crisis of the 1930s with the Belgian crisis of the 1830s. At the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the allies created a strong Kingdom of the Netherlands specifically in order to limit French power. When the Belgians seceded from the Netherlands, this was seen as boosting French power. The UK went along with it anyway, and everything turned out fine. It was an example of appeasement which worked. The problem was, Louis-Philippe in the 1830s was a very different kind of leader than Hitler in the 1930s.

Could you elaborate regarding the end map? (18:48) Is the marked land exchanged territory or usable by both? Why is Alsace-Lorraine one of them? France would under no circumstance even allow the thought of it. Also by that point the Germans there felt closer to France than Germany as well. Can you also talk about the Polish corridor? Also the Hungarian majority Transylvania? The Albania/Kosovo border is way off. More of the south would be taken, even parts of Macedonia, since those areas are the ones that are the actual Albanian majority. More of North Macedonia would be under the Bulgarian shared/exchanged border (also southern Dobrudja in a manner similar to treaty of Craiova)
