Replacing solar PV panels "every 10 to 20 years" would apply only to the lowest quality panels. The higher end panels carry a warranty of 25 years with an additional 90+% performance warranty. Many panel brands last 30+ years. Moreover, they are now recycling PV panels and recovering their materials for reuse. This is not to say this wind turbine isn't worth it, especially if its price outcompetes gas or grid hydro, but it could be limited to a supplementary role mainly used during dark winters and nighttime. The video states that solar PV takes a lot of room, well so what? Roofs are ideal anyway and offer pre-existing structural support. 'Agrivoltaics' is a new term and refers to the complementary roles solar arrays and crops can play when panels are raised up and medium shade tolerant crops are planted. Some panels are coming onstream with more clear area per panel to allow sunlight to pass through. The plants below also keep the panels cooler. Some solar-farming practices also allow greater space between panel arrays for lines of crops that can be harvested by tractor-based machinery. Net metering profit works only when the grid credits each kWh equal with or more than the grid charges per kWh., all above the cost of installing the system on a per kWh basis over time. As always, today's battery technology is advancing very quickly and should be considered as part of any renewable energy system.

The cost of these per Kw-h is ASTRONOMICAL. Their website says $4100 for one 100 watt turbine with mounting hardware. These cost 10x more than they should for what they are. You can buy a 150 watt VAT for less than $400. With another few hundred for an inverter. You can buy several kw turbine systems with the grid tie inverter for the same cost as this thing.

And it comes with a bullshit spiel. He said that you have to factor in replacement costs because solar systems only last 10-30 years, while his turbines last 30 years. Well, that is a replacement cost to factor in.

I see this as potentially complementary system to solar system on most areas. The average wind on most living areas it's under the minimum requirements for an efficient ROI. This vawt type combines the drag type with the lift type of the turbine which could improve the drag flows but still limited. The hawt principle is still more efficient. Good idea but, with all the respect it looks over claimed. Thank you for the insight!

General problem of small wind turbines: Too less wind near the ground, too less wind in built-up areas. Too less workload. Too high price per nominal power. And the Icewind turbine is no exception of this "rules". 25 mph wind for nominal power: You won't have many hours of this wind speed per year at average sites and near the ground. Typically less than hours of sunshine. And by the way: There is an older debunking-video for the Icewind turbine from "Grid Ops".

This is a Small turbine. They could make a much larger version with progressively smaller turbines nested inside inside for a combined effect in the same footprint.. Using extremely lightweight, but strong materials would result in increased spin. The ideal placements could take advantage of wind coming off a mountain range or daily onshore/offshore winds from the coastline.

I personally would like to see a home system that includes, wind, solar and Hydro power generation. Was hoping the Tesla system would have this, but it doesn't. However, I still believe their system could still end up being more of a money maker than their cars. If you have a dual battery system, you could charge one battery while using the other. Most systems count on generating enough electricity via solar panels to run the house and charge the battery at the same time during the day and then use the batteries at night. With just the addition of wind, you could continue charging, as long as the wind is blowing. Hydro, would be the 3rd charging method and for most people, (those that don't have a stream), would involve a hydro battery. Hydro batteries are basically water towers, they fill the tank up using the solar panels during times of excess capacity and the water is held until it is needed. If an extra charge is needed, the stored water is slowly released and uses gravity to generate the force to turn a small turbine. If you happen to have a stream on your property, then the tower isn't needed and hydro may be your second option ahead of wind, since it would be more consistent. Anyway, good to see the innovation on the wind turbines, enjoyed the video.

Wind and solar is intermittent but together with adequate storage could power a residential property every day of the year. Even in the center of the UK which has lots of cloudy days and unpredictable, multi directional wind speeds. Saying a technology is better than its rivals when both only work in certain weather conditions is dumb.

Every mechanical system wears, and the bearings have a definite life so this turbine will have a defined life and if constantly buffeted by disruptive winds then is life may be shortened, so may not live out a solar panel. But that is said this I think it is a good product, only that the commentary borders on the truth. Just like you car it may need new wheel bearings if it driven hard, and just like solar panels needing regular cleaning, your turbine will need regular inspection and maintenance, especially the design that is cantilevered from base. Without a top bearing, the lower bearing will see a high deflectional load and I suspect it's working hard.

A lot of bull shit if you ask me. So I asked AI this question: In the USA how many days a year does the wind not exceed 10 mph on average for 8 hours a day? AI: There is no definitive answer to this question, as the number of days with low wind can vary significantly from year to year and depending on the location within the USA. However, based on historical wind data, we can estimate that there are typically around 100 days per year in the USA where the average wind speed does not exceed 10 mph for 8 hours a day. Here is a breakdown of the estimated number of low-wind days per year for each region of the USA: Northeast: 120 days Midwest: 110 days South: 90 days West: 80 days That's a lot of days where a windmill sits still and you have to get a lot of power somewhere.

That means I will need at least 10 of this to wash my clothes lol. Our 20 KW solar system costed about 15.000 euros (so about 4-5 times the price of the freya model) but it produced between 25 kWh (day full of clouds and rain) and 120 kWh (sunny day in July) per day. It made 3000 kWh in July while this wind turbine will make 144 kWh in the best case scenario (running 24/24 for 30 days at max speed which is unreal). Sure it costed 5 times more but it produced 20 times more in July. Sure in winter the production will go down but it still will make more than I need for the daily routine.
