Placement, colleges depend. Preparing for GATE, helps you to clear other exams like the TNPSC Combined Engineering Service Exam and SSC JE Exam, and Public sector, some private sector recruiting based on the GATE score.

Though the chance is less to get a particular branch in a college, you keep it at the top of the choice list. There may be a possibility to get a seat.

TCE and CIT Coimbatore are the same-level institutes. You may select based on your location preference. Next to CIT CBE and TCE Madurai, you can consider GCT and then PSG ITech.
