Make sure you put the right lubricant in the gear box, absolutely essential AQF also make sure the fibre pump system therein isn't buggered. As to the the Head starvation, it's normally a return issue on the head itself from memory there is an O ring on the head block join and the connecting holes must be kept clean. While the Gear box is out check end float of the drive shaft.

I had issues with valve clearance checked when cold then rotate the engine and would get a different measurement turned out to be carbon on the back of the valves

@@tomdrives I need to get on with the welding this year. I might be able to get the car to one or two shows if possible. Can't believe that the clutch was stuck on the SD1. Great work Tom 👍🏻

Had a 2.0 litre SD1 over 30 years ago now, was nice car, what I do remember is the heater matrix is (or was) prone to leaking. Dash out job to replace. Also did a friends 2600 which also needed doing

I’ve heard that, thankfully mine is good!

Apart from the engines we in Rover Service had to replace in and out of warranty due to the seized camshafts, the other major issue I recall were the dropped liners that used to smash into the crankshafts. Rover Triumph engineers came up with either interference fit or ‘glued’ cylinder liners, which dropped and wrote the unit off. Can’t recall who, but someone adapted a Japanese “top hat” liner which required the block to be machined to accommodate the “lip”. Suggest you do likewise if your unit has any liners. Also friend of mine rigged up an external engine oil feed to the cylinder head of his 2600, with bundy tubing taken from an oil pressure check connection lower down on the block, for if ever the small doohickey stuck open and all the c/head oil drained, the camshaft wouldn’t seize before the oil feed to the head commenced - good luck 👍🏼

Nice.. I hope you cleaned up the filthy bellhousing before refitting the clutch ! Personally I wouldn’t fit the Vitesse front end, better to be honest and keep something of the basic 2600… paint the wheel centres gunmetal too…

My Tr7V8 used to suffer this if I had left it over a winter, could not get it into gear when engine running. (same LT77) What i used to do was push the car onto the road (I lived in a quiet cul-de-sac at the time) put the car in 2nd gear, sometimes 3rd...and turn over the car. She would go hopping down the road, but after a few attempts it would release, happy days. A bit stressful for the clutch/flywheel, thrust bearing, but it saved a lot of time :)

There is a valve that is supposed to keep oil in the head to ensure that the cam isn't dry from sitting long periods when starting, that often fails, causing the head to be starved of oil in normal running. We lost two 2600 sixes in our sd1 from this. The best fix is to remove the valve.
@tomdrives8 ай бұрын
I’ll be sorting that by fitting an oil feed to the head.

@@tomdrives onya mate. Was pretty sure you'd be on this like a sack of fleas on a tender but shaggy Irish Wolfhound. Mainly mentioned it to spell it out clearly for others that may have a bit, foggy from the mists of time theory that's gone a bit stray of the marque, in the mill of Chinese whispers 😉🤗

I'm guessing not many are keeping these triumph 6s, with the v8 being so plentiful. So much information on rarer cars gets lost in pages upon pages of forum posts that link to posts to long dead forums, YT is likely going to be here for a while.

Im soo happy to see someone try and see this engines potential Me and my dad bought a rover sd1 for parts a while ago and it had that 6 in it and we had to effectively give it away as no one wanted it Alot of our friends told us they were only usefull as a boat anchor 😂
