I really appreciate that you played the same riff, so we can actually hear the difference. Too many people in shootouts just play whatever for each pedal making it much harder to judge something.

The Blues Driver is really great. At lower settings you can get a nice, sparkly Swervedriver-esque sound, but you can also dime the gain and it becomes like a Fuzz Face.

The Blues Driver is easily some of the most bang you can get for your buck. I have a few pedals I prefer, but they’re like double the price. The only other great (distortion/fuzz/overdrive) pedal you can get for that cheap is a Big Muff.

dude! I also got into My Bloody Valentine after watching Lost In Translation. The scene when she's in the taxi (if I remember correctly) in Tokyo is so sublime. I remember thinking WHO is this band? Shoegaze can really create that magical place that most other genres can't. Side Note: Whenever I heard someone mention My Bloody Valentine before watching this film I always thought they were talking about Bullet For My Valentine. I remember thinking "I didn't know Bullet For My Valentine was around in the 80's."

I really loved the Digitech Hot Rod Distortion here. I was working on another screen while listening to the video and the Hot Rod Distortion was the pedal that made me stop what I was doing and pay attention to the video. Really loved how transparent it sounds yet it adds a really...warm/nostalgic sound. You make me want to spend all my money on pedals, damn it.

The Hot Rod is very cheap pre-owned so buying one won't break the bank! You can pick one up for about the same price you would pay new for the Behringer Super Fuzz (which sounds horrible in this video).

As someone who was into shoegaze first time around especially while I was at uni, I thought you did a really interesting introduction to the genre explaining it in a way that was even new and original to me so cheers for that. I also really like the way you keep your playing inside of a template to help us compare and understand the pedals - it's a really helpful format and sounds really good too.

Thank you so much for the kind words. Sometimes it feels like everyone has a different explaination of the genre as it's very vaguely defined. :) I'm happy you liked the format.

My personal preference is single note riffs or minimalist power chords through fuzz. I gave up trying to play full chords with fuzz back in 1978. The equipment I had then was probably too limited by my own youthful inexperience to sound any good. I'm now living evidence that we can get too set in our ways. But that does not mean we can never change old habits if motivated to make the effort.. I now own a stupidly large collection of fuzz pedals. There's no reason why big chords shouldn't sound good through some of them...???

I got into shoegaze when I saw Alison on 120 minutes when I was a kid in the 90's and couldn't find the song again until someone told me about the genre in highschool. I checked it out and it made me so nostalgic that I was instantly addicted.

I have more of a dreampop tone, a Jazzmaster into (all boss, all japanese models) Boss SD-1, then into an ME-X pedal tray, which has a BF-2 Flange, a DC-3 Digital Dimension, and a PH-2. The ME-X has some very interesting sounds, the pitch shift tracks pretty well, especially when used in conjunction with my e-bow. It also has a chromatic detune, that when you mix with the dual delays (one short, one long) and a nice spacious reverb, it sounds like the guitar is dripping into space. I noticed that the guitarist for Asobi Seksu had one in a live video I saw, which was cool, I wish i had gotten to see them live as I could have chatted with him about what use he got out of it, and how many songs he used it on, etc. Not many people use them anymore, and mine is well over 20 years old at this point.

My favorite complimentary fx to this riff was the Waza/Boss sound. Or the Soda Miser sound on your pink Boi. That with the disaster/destroyer pedal at the end would make a solid riff fx sequence to a song, or have them all engaged at once!

Recently got Digitech Hot Head and it is amazing for my needs with the mixer out setting, as well as Big Muff Pi (w. Tone Wicker) I got some more expensive fuzzes but I found out I could get those sounds out of the Muff with changing settings.

I have a Big Muff and a RAT on my pedalboard (my big muff is my booster) and the RAT has cool settings to play with and get a cool sound. I tried few distortion from Boss and they are probably for me the worst distortion i ever heard. I also have a Marshall Jackhammer, very cool pedal for leads but for chords it can go too fat. But you can adjust the filter and the coutour of the sound and it's very nice. But yeah the best distortion that i ever heard and play it's the Proco RAT, through my avalanche run and a flanger it's sound so great!

I'm surprised you only use one of the two settings on the Behringer Super Fuzz? That little thing is my go to Distortion nowadays. There's this trick where you can get the switch just right in between 1& 2 where you can actually get both one and two fuzz Distortion types together. Another cool trick I use is putting the Boost setting on my drum machine. It gives it a real hard, slap, in your face punch.

Hey Kenneth, big fan of the channel, my first pedal was a Zoom MS 70 CDR which I bought on your recommendation! If you're looking for any new pedals to demo in your videos, I highly recommend the EHX Attack Decay, especially for the fuzz! It isn't even marketed as a fuzz pedal, but I found the fuzz setting so be so good it actually replaced my Big Muff. It's the warmest, most saturated fuzz I've ever heard, you can dial in weird low-res glitchy stuff into it too, and the tone shaping has a boost at the cutoff so you can even get synthy sounding sweeps by moving the knob around. It's also got a ton of other features that fit really nicely into a shoegaze aesthetic. I'd love to see what you can do with it! Cheers xx

I'd recommend grabbing whatever you happen to have on hand, most people have some random dirt pedal lying around and even fairly trashy sounding pedals can sound great for shoegaze.

I’m getting decent results with a boss ds-1 and a big muff. Would really like to give a blues driver a go. Nice video. Thanks

i use a Boss HM-2{1992 era}, Beehive Octafuzz, Keeley Fuzz Bender and a hand made MKI Tone Bender from a guy in Augusta, GA. I will use any combination therein and depending on what i'm looking for run one of them post fx. I used to have a blues driver which i want to reacquire.

Another great video! This and the verb vid are super useful. That's a really nice progression, what tuning are you using for it? Keep it up, you're doing God's work!

His tuning and the chords are in the description. I think he wins the internet just for that alone!

I love the Behringer Superfuzz sound, wish it didn't shit the bed once you add the third note of a chord.

Then don’t add the third note of a chord. Simple as that.

I get what you mean about the chords getting lost in the distortion/fuzz. I got a friend that does everything "shoegaze" he only plays jazzmasters and he would say the same thing about the more melodic chords getting lost in the distortion, but I let him borrow a guitar with an emg 81 active pickup and he loved how pronounced the chords sounded, but he did say there is no way in hell he is putting an Emg on his jazzmaster no matter how good it sounds lol...but I suppose that the "crutch" or "purity" shoegazer have, they are very die hard about what guitars, pedals, amps and visual aesthetic they prefer, many shoegazers prefer a certain "look" over function lol.

Fuzz never served me well in terms of chords. What I do is use a Digitech Screamin' Blues and record with mid level gain (still hearing the complex notes) and I'll re-record over it with the Super Fuzz but only the powerchord version of the notes I played through the Blues pedal. That way you hear the fuzz and you hear the chord.

Kevin's, MBV, main Fuzz Pedal is the "Fender Blender Fuzz". The Blender is pretty-much Kevin's signature Fuzz sound... .

I have a big muff circa 1978 model. You ought to build a song around those chords. Sounds catchy.
