dude! I also got into My Bloody Valentine after watching Lost In Translation. The scene when she's in the taxi (if I remember correctly) in Tokyo is so sublime. I remember thinking WHO is this band? Shoegaze can really create that magical place that most other genres can't. Side Note: Whenever I heard someone mention My Bloody Valentine before watching this film I always thought they were talking about Bullet For My Valentine. I remember thinking "I didn't know Bullet For My Valentine was around in the 80's."

I really loved the Digitech Hot Rod Distortion here. I was working on another screen while listening to the video and the Hot Rod Distortion was the pedal that made me stop what I was doing and pay attention to the video. Really loved how transparent it sounds yet it adds a really...warm/nostalgic sound. You make me want to spend all my money on pedals, damn it.

My personal preference is single note riffs or minimalist power chords through fuzz. I gave up trying to play full chords with fuzz back in 1978. The equipment I had then was probably too limited by my own youthful inexperience to sound any good. I'm now living evidence that we can get too set in our ways. But that does not mean we can never change old habits if motivated to make the effort.. I now own a stupidly large collection of fuzz pedals. There's no reason why big chords shouldn't sound good through some of them...???

I have more of a dreampop tone, a Jazzmaster into (all boss, all japanese models) Boss SD-1, then into an ME-X pedal tray, which has a BF-2 Flange, a DC-3 Digital Dimension, and a PH-2. The ME-X has some very interesting sounds, the pitch shift tracks pretty well, especially when used in conjunction with my e-bow. It also has a chromatic detune, that when you mix with the dual delays (one short, one long) and a nice spacious reverb, it sounds like the guitar is dripping into space. I noticed that the guitarist for Asobi Seksu had one in a live video I saw, which was cool, I wish i had gotten to see them live as I could have chatted with him about what use he got out of it, and how many songs he used it on, etc. Not many people use them anymore, and mine is well over 20 years old at this point.

If you're looking for any new pedals to demo in your videos, I highly recommend the EHX Attack Decay, especially for the fuzz! It isn't even marketed as a fuzz pedal, but I found the fuzz setting so be so good it actually replaced my Big Muff. It's the warmest, most saturated fuzz I've ever heard, you can dial in weird low-res glitchy stuff into it too, and the tone shaping has a boost at the cutoff so you can even get synthy sounding sweeps by moving the knob around. It's also got a ton of other features that fit really nicely into a shoegaze aesthetic. I'd love to see what you can do with it! Cheers xx

I got a friend that does everything "shoegaze" he only plays jazzmasters and he would say the same thing about the more melodic chords getting lost in the distortion, but I let him borrow a guitar with an emg 81 active pickup and he loved how pronounced the chords sounded, but he did say there is no way in hell he is putting an Emg on his jazzmaster no matter how good it sounds lol...but I suppose that the "crutch" or "purity" shoegazer have, they are very die hard about what guitars, pedals, amps and visual aesthetic they prefer, many shoegazers prefer a certain "look" over function lol.

Fuzz never served me well in terms of chords. What I do is use a Digitech Screamin' Blues and record with mid level gain (still hearing the complex notes) and I'll re-record over it with the Super Fuzz but only the powerchord version of the notes I played through the Blues pedal.
