There are not a huge number of parts inside one of these simple engines, but each and every one will need some attention before we put it back together. In this episode we will clean the pistons, crankshaft, and top end parts/hardware up and pack it all away so the parts are ready when we need them. We'll also set up a parts washer and talk about basic hands-on cleaning methodology.
Dates of filming: January 8th, 2020 (Parts Washer Setup)
February 4th - 5th, 2020 (Cleaning Parts)
April 24th, 2020 (Cleaning Crankshaft)
Song List (Order of First Appearance):
0:01 Honey and Milk - The 126ers
6:52 Sawdust - Silent Partner
11:55 Freedom - Dan Lebowitz

I mean...you can say what you want...but he takes VERY poor parts, make them look pretty darn good. A budget build doesnt mean spit on the pushrods and roll them in dirt and throw it into the engine. Just don't spend a lot of MONEY persay, but maximize your time and do a cheap enough build. Looking great so far, love the cleaning that's getting done.

Purple power has a PH of 11-12 according to it's MSDS, meaning it's alkaline. Aluminium has a protective oxide layer that is stable in a PH between 4.0 and 8.5. So leaving the pistons in the purple power for a long time has etched them. I hope there was no special coating on the piston's skirts because that might have been etched as well.

@marxist google can you explain why? I’m genuinely curious, is it just discolouration or has it corroded/damaged the aluminum in some way? Thanks
@OmegaGamingNetwork
@OmegaGamingNetwork 3 жыл бұрын
@@nakulah Purple power is caustic to aluminum. It strips the protective oxide layer on aluminum and corrodes it pretty badly. He is likely in for a pretty nasty surprise when he unwraps them next. That said, it is entirely possible he gets lucky and he got them cleaned and the WD-40 removed it before any serious damage was done, but I'm not terribly optimistic.

Hello Ronald, I don't know if you will even see this comment but I feel right putting this info here anyway. Have you considered having the piston skirts knurled? Doing a budget rebuild like this one is a great time for this. You may be familiar with the process but just in case someone else wonders, knurling the piston skirts is an inexpensive stop gap procedure that increase the thickness of the piston skirt, done correctly it will make the pistons the original ish diameter. I am a retired Automotive Machinist so I have done this myself in the past many many times. There are those that will say this is a useless thing to do but having done this myself and then disassembling the engine years later I can attest that it does last for quite a long time and will keep everything in spec and happy longer. You will have the information to have it done already, you simply need to know the finished bore size and the measurement of the piston at the skirt. The shop will then put the piston in a machine that is set to put a bunch of raised knurls onto the skirt. this will help tremendously with any piston to wall differences. Most machine shops that cater to the DIY market will have one of these machines in a dark corner of the shop lol.

I love how some other car youtubers will take a project that only looks bad but is mechanicaly sound and call it "The Worst Ever Build On KZbin (Never Do This) SHOCKING!!!!1!1!1" Then Fuzzy Dice comes along with damaged cam bearings on one project, really high oil clearance on another, and rusty cylinders just honed until they look less terrible on both and he just goes "Eh, it'll be fiiiiiiine." Then after he puts it all together, it's fine. It runs, drives, and he goes on adventures without a care having a blast. This is honestly true blue hotrodding at it's finest: sketchy, weird, against all conventions and common sense, and, most imortantly, fun. This shows you don't need to buy expensive parts for expensive engines to put in one of a select handful of popular expensive cars, you can take a car that is super cheap put a super cheap rebuilt engine with used and/or super cheap parts and have fun. And it'll be fine.

Question. 1978 Pontiac Firebird? Wouldn't that be a 455? Pontiac, Buick, and Oldsmobile didn't make a 454 in the late 70's. That's a Chevrolet motor. But that's me assuming that you are using a factory Pontiac motor. Which if I remember correctly the V8 would have been a 400 or a 403. I don't think a even the 455 was offered for the 78. But I've been wrong before and will be again.

For all you Gearheads out there there's an easier way it's called Zoom injector cleaner I had a couple of engines I pulled out of a junkyard I'm not going to say what kind or not but they were well junked up with Pennzoil syndrome and I was able to use this product with our small brush for application and anything that you wanted cleaned you just code it on it even carbon and all the stuff that's in the oil rings you just treat that until mystery them and wrap them up and plastic and let the stuff do its work and I mean it does all the work there was very little to do disassemble everything saved everything and put this motor back together and drove a long enough to know that it was almost as new as a factory built motor be used in a oil that's hard to say for a Ford but there it is in a nutshell I still have that motor after I was not blessed with doing it but the car was dismantled I have all the parts that I invested in it laying around sitting around wherever the car I finally abandoned because the guy that are blessed it with loaded it full of title loans I pray for the guy. So if you want or a lazy type mechanic like I am my experiment worked beautifully and I bought a whole case of this stuff and didn't care what the cost is it was well over around two hundred bucks I don't remember it was well worth that I still have several bottles of it left it doesn't smell or irritate my sinuses and didn't irritate my hands using it so good luck you guys Ed an old MO

@UCq7j-QMy5iJFL9h0zxuYISg I mean, I understand where you're coming from, but with vortec heads, not really what I would call smoggers, its a roller cam setup so usually with flat tappet, you don't want to run a used cam, but honestly I've been able to run used but cleaned up roller cams in other motors, I wasn't really intending on running it as a race engine or anything close to it, I just wanted to take it apart, maybe throw some new bearings in it, hone the cylinders, hand polish the crank and re-gasket it so I can let it sit on my engine run stand so I can run it occassionaly and keep it from turning into a rusty boat anchor on my basement floor. Then when I have the money to send it off, get it trued up at the machine shop and buy some AFR heads and run an efi setup, then ill run it in a 78 k20 truck I have, youre mostly right, but for what I'm using it for, just something to spend a few hundred bucks and some time on having fun messing with another engine, thing probably won't even see anything above 2k rpm, more of something to fire up just to hear some noise and then shut it down, then ill rip it apart again and have it done high-dollar correct. Mostly trying to figure out a fun way to keep it from wasting away.

I soak in kerosene. Then use wire bushes to remove carbon. Old rings work great to scrub out grooves. One final overnight soak immersed in kerosene, final brake clean. I then lube wrist pins and they're minty. I would avoid using anything that isn't hydrocarbon based. Degreaser is corrosive to aluminum and water is corrosive to steel/iron.

I would recommend using something like Evaporust water based rust remover to clean your rusty nuts/bolts and parts. After cleaning the dirt and grease off, use the Evaporust to remove the rust. I would leave the bolts/parts soak overnight and most would look like new again. It is a lot better and sanding or grinding the rust off which can wear down the threads. Loving the series though!

The expander pushes the rails out while also allowing the oil to drain back thru the piston at the same time

Probably could build a parts washer out of a 55 gallon drum. Or an old heater oil or propane tank.

Привет. Есть такой медицинский препарат как Димексид. Просто не надолго замачиваешь в нём деталь, потом очищаешь или солфеткой или тряпкой и вуаля все блестит как новое!

You should be using a solvent like varsol to clean your parts not purple power

Filtration problems? Maybe a disposable rag to use as a prefilter? Maybe look into something that is washable and reusable. The fuel filter was a good idea, but if used to filter parts cleaner fluid that has been soaking dirty parts, of course it will clog up quickly. Nice modding of the parts washer, though. A few more, and you may have what you're looking for. Extra points for backyard engine parts cleaning and prepping. I'm sure you'll use the services of a machine shop when needed.

As handy as you are I like to see switch over to vapor honing. You'll absolutely love it. That crank would come out brand-new, or like brand-new. I started using ultrasonic cleaners about two years ago for smaller parts and absolutely love it. Keep up the good work I love your videos!!!!

I used SeaFoam to clean and soak some parts off my 454 and it worked pretty damn good. Also won't hurt anything because it petroleum based. Diesel fuel might also be good to soak parks in.

For small hardware, a parts or jewelry tumbler is great. You throw nuts or bolts in and they'll tumble in degreaser for as long as you want, and they look nearly new when you take them out. I got one for about 60 dollars online and I use it all the time

It's fun watching your videos. This is what hot rodding is all about. If you plan to re-use rods and main caps without resizing its good to use the old bearings. The rods and main will be slightly out of round and the old bearings are worn into them

great video but u forgot to blow out and oil the pin that connects the rod to the piston. spraying the whole thing with wd40 works good but it normally misses that spot and can cause more rust over storage

Use a thinner gap gauge to release the rings without damage if they are stuck. Put it under the lose part of one side and move it all the way around and hold your tumb on the ring so it wont snap. Hitting it with a hammer can leave damage to the grooves and new rings might not move freely.

As I said either earlier in this video or the previous one, purple power can definitely damage aluminum so you don't want to leave it in it too long. Over night can definitely hurt them.
