A lot of people like to criticize Dominique Jackson's acting on the show for not showing enough range, but they fail to realize that her character is based off of how house mothers were back then. Regal, dignified and hardly bats an eye but still able to help others in time of need. She's a lovely actress and deserves every bit of praise in life

Exactly. I know Paris is Burning has its fair share of controversies but despite that, it's still firmly on the Essential Viewing list. Dorian Corey could break you and your shortcomings down to the atomic level so elegantly and smoothly that you wouldn't even realize that she just read the absolute dogsh*t outta you until the next day if you were lucky. The next week if you were stupid. 😆🏳️‍🌈🎉

People who critize her acting clearly haven't ever had to learn that type of dialogue in such a short time span. She speaks every word as if it was coming out of her brain right that second, she's a great actress.

What you just described is the definition of reading. Its an insult, but with class; something personal, and undeniable, and more often than not, eloquently spoken. Calling out someones flaws in the cattiest way possible.

It wouldn’t be reading if it didn’t. It’s taking the darkest parts they see in you and bringing them to light, calling out your deepest flaws in a way that cannot be disputed. They may be rude af, but you can’t say they weren’t spitting facts.

@Akan Ledger, but not surprising. For years, I always felt that awards shows were ignoring some of the best possible recipients. I never truly realized how much "whitewashing" goes on in Hollywood until the hashtag #whitewashing came on the scene. Although I have not watched any awards shows for more than a decade, I knew instinctively that Hollywood would not learn its lesson, and I still see so many new movies and TV shows with almost exclusively white casts or white leads. The fact that there are people who go well out of their way to ignore the fact that not everyone is white, AND, male, AND, heterosexual, AND Christian, as in, ALL FOUR boxes, amazes me.

THIS. I was rooting so hard for Mj Rodriguez. They killed in the last season, and especially in the scenes up to and after Pray Tell died. The scream she let out when Ricky told her Pray was dead, my god. I ugly cried the whole time. That wasn't acting. That was real life experience vocalized.

It always bugs me with the last clip that they never show the part where she gets her mob connections to break into the store and steal ALL the wedding dresses. The colorism really undermines the brilliance of the show IMO. The ways Elektra & Blanca were pitted against one another could be very realistic but also very flat when it could've been written more subtly & complex. I feel so many happy endings (however temporary) went to lighter skinned characters. Yes, tragedy was switched up but less stinginess with joy is all I'd ask.

"Pose" did so much to educate me about this world, and about trans* rights and history. (I was especially impacted by that one episode where Blanca tries to sit in a gay bar and then they violently kick her out because she didn't look like a cisgender male. It was very shameful, though eye-opening.) Before this show I was so ignorant. But because it filled a blind spot I had, this show quickly became one of my faves. I especially loved Elektra and her reads. Yes, she seemed a bit wooden when it came to her acting. But her reads--this is where she shined brightest! :D

One thing I couldn’t stand about Elektra was that she loved to tear people down. Sometimes the reads would b well deserved but most of the time she just said really nasty ugly disgusting things as a so-called mother to her children.

thats the entire point though. that was her insecurity - people leaving her, or doing better than her. its a serious insecurity which was played out in a very well portrayed way. Towards the end, you could see she was softer on her girls, and she started to show more love, openly. She started to not care as much if someone was doing better than her, and focused on making other people feel better. thats her character arc. She always loved her girls and the functions, but her demon was that she needed to win to feel validated as a success, she needed "real men" to feel validated as a woman, and she needed her girls to validate she is loved. thats how i read it anyway

Back in the day I knew many Trans Women who who read the eyes out of your head and who were even more viscious than Dominique. These were girls who carried hatchets, hammers, and guns in their purses. The times were VERY different and the Dolls protected themselves any way they could. Her reads are accurate for the time!

Her and Julia Sugarbaker {Designing Women} would scorch the earth with such elegance and verbiage. Reading anyone and everyone to filth and then pristine. Only to then have them fall apart in their after-burn. My God her tongue is lethal! 🔥🔥🔥🔥😂🤣❤️

When pose was ending there was a number/hotline you could call where Elektra would give you advice. It was Covid, I was a senior in high school and I was also struggling with a few things in my social life…but hearing her messages basically saying “everything would be alright.” Filled me with so much strength. Thank you mother Elektra
