I switched from P6KPro + Canon R6 to Sony FX3 + FX6, and I totally agree, the image quality is much better on the Blackmagic (better colors, textures, details, highlight roll off = much more filmic). I really miss it, and I regret my choice of following the hype wagon. The Sony's are convenient that's for sure but if you are looking for the best quality choose the Blackmagic!!!

How will you pull onto a subject and control focus? People who defend BM usually just do panning and static work.

As a Blackmagic user myself I can comment on the difference you noticed in dynamic range. Looking at the tests by CinD testing the A7S3 which is the exact same sensor in the FX3 but with a different body. CineD tests show the Sony is actually a full stop in dynamic range above the Blackmagic. The difference you are noticing is the sudden fall of in the highlights and shadows from the Sony. Here the Blackmagic rolls off smoother which gives it the appearance of equal dynamic range to the Sony.
@NINETY-97-SEVEN Жыл бұрын

@@NINETY-97-SEVENSony probably gave more dynamic range in the shadow than blackmagic. You can use lower iso than your base iso 800, so you can have more dynamic range in your highlight at the cost of shadow noise.

I'm not an expert, but should be able to control rolloff in Post, if you shot footage with a higher dynamic range than rec. 709. Previous owner of bmpcc6k pro, and now fx3. I agree with your point and I still lean to blackmagic braw image quality, but yeah shooting solo and run and gun made the blackmagic rig get big and more flashier. So losing the image quality and gained small form factor, better battery life, no cropping when shooting lower res, mobility, and lowlight performance. I believe both cameras are amazing and it all depends on the project type and style.

Dude, thanks for this video! Blackmagic is king! We need more of these types of videos! Sony needs to add a "usable" dynamic range to the description, but there's no way it has 15 stops. The big difference is the Pocket 6K pro is a real cinema camera, where you have to light, learn to pull focus, and learn how to shoot steady handheld. Even still, the dual native ISO lets you capture clean images in lower light situations or just using practicals. Shooting in almost complete darkness and expecting to get an image is ridiculous. If you master that, you can use this camera for run-and-gun and documentary films. Ultimately, you will be a more highly skilled filmmaker in every way rather than depending on AF or IBIS.

I saw some big time movie makers said the same thing. Cinema lenses are not auto focus lenses that should have ringed a bell to most people that's serious about movie production. You can totally use the FX3 like a cinema camera though. And the useable DR is close it’s like 13.5 in most scenarios and if you maximize it it can hit close to 14. You can also get a RAW recorder, and “learn to shoot” properly with cinema lenses. It has all the features to do so except limited anamorphic desqueeze. You can technically do most everything on the FX3 that you can do on the P6K except have internal NDs and shoot 6k. You can’t however shoot in low light without lights, shoot run and gun with Auto focus, shoot on full frame lenses without adapters, etc. Nothing prevents you from using the FX3 like a 6K pro but there’s a lot preventing you from using the 6k like an fx3

here is how I see these 2 cameras. if you want to get the cheeper camera get the fx3. 1 lens (24-70 or 16-35), 1 vnd filter and 1 sd card( v60 is the best money to performance option) and batteries( at least 3) will take you all the way. the BMPCC 6K is very expensive. 1st after you buy the camera thinking its cheep, you will most likely buy the sigma 18-35 for the virsatility, then an ssd (samsung t5- the t7 or newer dosen't work on it) and you will want a focus puller cause no AF(nucleas nano and a guy to pull focus(optional)) and to mount the storage and focus pulling on the camera, a cage. you will also get a v-mount later on because the battery dosent last at all. later you will buy an external ND as well because the internal nd is not enought and lots of extra hardrives because you will find out the 6k spits out really huge size files so about 8tb if you dont mind clearing drive every 2-3 months. But if you want the best image and post production ability and no money limit, get the 6k. the braw is easy to process and has in my openion more dynamic range than the fx3. but make sure you use the cameras before buying anyone of them. the safer one is the fx3 if you cant have test runs.

Very well-done video, and glad to see a fellow creator from Florida. I’ll say the reason you may not have noticed Sony’s 15 stops of dynamic range. The way you exposed your shots were fantastic, but in order to reap the full dynamic range of S-Log3 you must expose each shot +1.0 to +1.7 past what the multi-meter says is +0.0. Since they clean up shadows rather well via low-light superiority and highlight recovery is decent, it adds more range.

The 6k Pro's built-in filters and RAW capability is why it is my first choice. Definitely what I would use outdoors. If I had to shoot a project with a quick turnaround, in my experience, the FX3 just does it. Without touching any settings or enabling features, I was able to use the FX3 and have a quality video without grading or adding a LUT. I will shoot with the FX3 a little more to see which one produces a "less digital" looking image. Lastly, I got the 6k Pro first because of the screen/monitor. great review. In my opinion, if you're a beginner filmmaker and trying to make money, the FX3 is the way to go & truly worth waiting a bit longer if necessary to save up a bit more to purchase because you're less limited in terms of what you can create. Sure the blackmagic has a slightly better image but the FX3 is phenominal and at the end of the day, the viewer wont even notice that minor difference, story is king. With the blackmagic you'll need a way to pull focus (which will be a MASSIVE headache if you're a beginner) and that adds to the cost. Then if you want to film in dark places, you'll need lights, and lights can be really expensive as well, which just adds to the cost and then that will eliminate the guerilla aspect of beginner filmmaking. plus, if 12 bit raw is the determining factor, you can record 16bit raw externally on the FX3. lastly you can always build your camera up slowly, buy only the essential to get started and you can rent anything extra you might need for bigger shoots on rental sites like sharegrid.

Currently looking at the DJI Ronin 3PRP and LIDAR to get all the features the FX3 has. I.e. if I want stabilization and autofocus I'm going to fork over another 2 grand bringing the total investment easily above 5K for the 6K. @@idirrefsi9499 TLDR; Not really if you know your way around in post production. You could easily match the two with minimal adjustments. Both are superb if you know how to use them "for their own strengths" it depends if you want more versatility or a workhorse in terms of filmmaking. → A7IV - if you want an all around body → FX3 - if you're exclusively shooting videos/lowlight/fast paced (A7IV has a bit of wobble when whipping it) I suggest going with the FX3 if you already have a photo camera to pair it with. The A7IV is super sharp that I find myself reducing some in post, but with a filtration on top of the lens, you're good to go. The FX3... you just know it's built for filmmakers. It won't let you down on any type of video project. It's so good at lowlight ISO 12800 barely has noise in it, it's mind blowing. Also doesn't get that hot like the A7IV (Kinda uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time if I'm shooting 4K60 as it gets hot. Never had it overheated on me tho) But I find myself going for the A7IV as my daily body as it gives me versatility shooting videos and great photos, still good at lowlight (atleast for me).. aps-c mode is an added bonus if I wanted more reach.

I'm a blackmagic guy myself, however through the years I've learned that the best equipment to have is the one you really need, not what's latest and greatest. That being said...CHALLENGE accepted. I'll probably get both LOL 😂

Really good test, i think the same,im a fx3 owner Black magic its too sharp perfect for studio situations, but fx3 puro focus and native iso are incredible I hope in a fusion “ black Magic fx5 “ to create the perfect camera ahah Gg from italy

The 6k pro is 🔥 plus it waaaaaayyyyy cheaper compare to the FX3. But man....I'm aiming more towards the FX3. Freaking over $5000 with the len included. Goals!!!!

Another best part about black magic is that i can freely edit a raw footage in davinci while sony fx3 only can shoot pro res with atomos ninja monitor, and no raw format. Which i got a bit regret as the only benefit i hv for FX3 is it battery life & shot in low iso.. not to mention color skin in sony is a bit red 😅

The VND filters sometimes have a tint to it so it can throw the colors off a bit.

Even though I used Sony for photography, I must say that Blackmagic is definitely more cinematic and a better choice for cinematography. FX3 footage feels more like that of a basic SLR camera, whereas Blackmagic footage feels more cinematic and like that of a proper movie camera.

Great video once again Brother! As you already know, I'm now all set on Canon for my bodies. But this filter system looks dope dude!! After my tripod (that I've upgraded thanks to you), you will create me some new needs 🤣! Good job man!! Take care and we'll catch up later! Deuces man!!! ✌

Manufacturers advertise their dynamic range rating with WILDLY different standards. Sony's "15 stops+" dynamic range includes everything the sensor can detect, regardless of signal-to-noise ratio, which is not very helpful and potentially misleading in practical use. With the same standard, Sony is rating their cameras, the 6k pro could be advertised to have 16 stops 😂.
@zechenwei1139 Жыл бұрын
And that also doesn't account for the "Highlight recovery" function in Davinci Resolve that could about 1/3 stops more and avoid harsh clipping in the image.

Man the 6k Pro has many many more features except Auto focus. The Sony has that Netflix approval though. Damn I want both.

The video was very informative. However, I would appreciate a better understanding of the sound. The sound is inverted phase in the intro scene and very noisy. If you make it mono, the voice disappears, which causes problems on many mobile devices.

Of course the Blackmagic 6K will have more noise showing up. It's shooting in BRAW. The FX3 has digital denoising done on to of the stuff you're recording. I can easily shoot at ISO 8000 with Blackmagic 6K, put it in Davinci Resolve, and clean it up super quick. Try shooting RAW with the FX3 and compare both. Then it will be a fair comparison. That being said, it's obvious that an APS-C sensor will have more grain than a Full Frame sensor.

I dont even have these cameras but I can say that Blackmagic colour science dynamic range is more cinematic ...but fx3 is good in its own way too ..

For me BM has one of the most beautiful image quality out there, if you want a fast camera get the canon r6 o r5c, I’m not convinced of Sonys image quality yet… I never like the fx3 quality, I was about to change since I like how the camera looks and perform but image quality is not there, definitely with good lighting you can make anything shine

FX3 low-light capability is second to none. Has saved my ass so many times! Worth the minor drop in quality from the 6k Pro.

I've seen other BMPCC 6K PRO side-by-side comparisons like this and in every case, the Blackmagic skin tone, color pickup, and clarity is always better. The FX3 is just muddy looking. Just wait until November when the full frame Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera 6K (L-mount) comes out!

i think that downloadable footage can help - the fx3 look too magenta so there is somthing wrong with the balance - also sony provide really bad luts so there are some amazing luts for better starting point like phantom lut - next time just balance the image to get the most natural image and use better lut as starting point then compare the image (blackmagic is amazing but sony can provide amazing image) also remember that you can use the lut in camera with the sony so you can get amazing rec 709 with phantom luts

I bought FX3, but I still can’t learn how to paint frames, the colors seem dirty, and the image is plastic, not alive 😔 I switched from Nikon Z6 + Atomos Ninja V. But I hope this is a matter of skills, and not the nature of the color and camera images and your shots prove it . Thank you!

I use my 6k run and gun all the time. Its better than the Sony strictly based on screen and ND’s alone. Not to mention braw makes it so much easier to expose and fix later. Just my opinion. I am upgrading to sony fx6 so theres that😂

I have the both, I think the colors are bether in blackmagic , espcialy with generation 5 colors. Sony dynamic range have bether recover hight light files comparing to prores files, but not bether than Raw. I use sony in situations that is danger to pull focus manualy . Blackmagic is far easy tor grade. Prores is to easy to edit in any machine. With sony isfun to shoot and safer, with blackmagic is fun in post and a torture to shoot.

I need help. I’ve never used cameras before and want to start making KZbin content while also learning how to make cinematic content as my true passion is film. I’ve never used or owned a camera and have been having my eyes heavily on the FX3 and the black magic 6k pro but every single review and opinion I see seems to all be the same and as someone who’s new I’m struggling to find which one I think would best fit. What do you guys recommend? FX3 or BMPCC6k Pro? In terms of easy, amazing quality, simple with editing, versatility (KZbin content + cinematic content), etc.

What’s up brother. Truth is they’re both great cameras but they both excel at different things and I think it’s important to know what kind of shots your trying to achieve and the kind of content your going to be shooting most of the time and then try to evaluate the pros and cons of both. I think the FX3 is probably more suited for beginners.

Couldn’t get past these 2 dudes complaining about pulling focus. There’s even a cutaway shot showing a focus gear clearly not on right. Study the craft first. Learn to set the motor up properly. Pull focus as an AC for a bit. Do you guys complain about Alexas because they can’t pull focus for you? Sony autofocus is good but it’s not great. I like what you were saying earlier but it was tough to hear with the poor audio quality. Definitely worth a solid sound mix session :)
