I remember Fyfe Robertson when I was in my teens, and to be quite honest I think that he was one of the best.

I remember him coming to my secondary school A bey Grange Leeds in the late sixties with the Tonight team. They were filming a class following the then recently introduced CSE curriculum. I managed to get Fyfe’s Autograph.

I remember him doing a report from a few yards up from my home, and saying that he was reporting from the Dirtiest Place in Britain. The locals were outraged, but he was absolutely right. He was standing next to a blast furnace which belched out black smoke filled with thick grit every hour, but the locals assumed he meant they were dirty, instead of which, much to the amazement of people who didn't live within that 'fall out' zone, they would have sparkling white washing and their houses, which had to be dusted 2 or even 3 times A DAY, were always kept immaculate.

Like others of a certain age I loved to hear Fyfes voice with that beautiful, light, highland accent. Always interesting and a typical character of his time.

Evidently he adopted a Gorbals affectation.

"or is it?" He would always make a statement and immediately question it.
