I guess people don't realize that a couple hundred years ago before electricity, gas, cars, cell phone, internet, supermarkets, snow blowers/plows...you get my point - people still lived in these climates and SURVIVED!! And in many cases raised large families in a house the size of yours or a bit larger. If you were snowed in you have unlimited amounts of frozen water! Oh - and the snow ice cream you could make!

When I first moved to the mountains back in 1971 the steep learning curve started. In 1978 I moved up to 7000' and worked at 8900'. The first couple years the locals called me a flatlander. I finally learned LOL. Lots of flatlanders just do not now what life on the mountain is like. Its not just deep snow but deep snow on steep roads. Being snowed in for days or even weeks is just a way of life. I do not live at 7k anymore but we are off grid and we do prepare for being snowed in. this year we have only had a couple feet of snow. right now there is only about 4 inches and the temp is a balmy 38F at noon. Wild fire is more of a concern for us than the weather. I do miss the high country. You are an amazing young Lady. May the Lord bless you and your home!

Hi Ariel! I have watched your videos for a while now, and never really commented but this video struck a cord so i want to say a few words! :) As you do, i live in a place that has long hard winters (Sweden, Scandinavia). Being a arctic country we of course got some really harsh long winters with tons of snow, especially up north. I dont own a snowblower either. Never had, never will. February 2018 we had in two days 5 feet of snow. And it snowed every day from February 2 to April 19. Crazy amount of snow. Then spring arrived and stayed for two weeks. Then summer set in and it was a record warm summer and no rain from May to the end of October. It was the hottest summer in modern history. Even up in Lapland we had temperatures over 100 F. At the end of July fires started and at the most we had over 90 wildfires going on in this tiny country. Several really big that called for aid from France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Norway and Finland to help us deal with. Then winter arrived again and at the same time as last year, February 2 snow started falling. Four feet of snow in a couple of days. Then something odd happened. January and February is usually the coldest months with temperatures down to 25-40 below zero. This February we have ha spring with temperatures around 50 F. Even up north. The snow is almost thawed away and i can wear sneakers instead of mukluks. Love the snow, i live in a small house, not of grid but with wood stoves cause power can go out when is snows like crazy. Still here, even without a snowblower! ;) Thanx for sharing!

Instead of shoveling all that snow, I would put my efforts into building prefab, removable snow tunnels. Some paths I would cover with a roof and add sides in the fall. Long areas of the walkways could be covered in the fall to eliminate their shoveling.
@FyNyth5 жыл бұрын
I suppose one could. But you'd have to build them to carry a snow load of 180 pounds per square foot unless you want to have to shovel them off instead. And that would get into some pretty heavy, expensive, and hard to move structures. :) And I imagine you might get a lot more wildlife moving into nice dark cave like tunnels....

Wow! You are the Bomb!! I would love to have half of your knowledge to live like that. You are so smart! I live in Georgia and hate the heat. I've always wanted to live where it would snow. When it snows here, people lose their minds. If they predict even a fraction of an inch, everything closes. I'm embarrassed to live here. Your puppy is so adorable!
@nellcovington40015 жыл бұрын
As a person living in Colorado and who grew up in NW Louisiana, I would say don't be embarrassed because everything closes when it snows a little. Be embarrassed that people don't have the sense to stay off the roads when it snows. Since they don't have experience driving in snow (and there is a big difference), it is wise to stay home. Even here in Colorado, people drive like it was sunny with clear roads, when they should just stay home. Of course, here, businesses don't close so some folks don't have a choice. When the Air Force transferred us from Virginia to South Dakota, we had to get used to driving differently. The first time I drove our van I got stuck trying to turn left, which blocked two lanes of traffic. Several folks got out and pushed me out of the of snow piled up between lanes in the middle of the road. They recommended all-weather tires which turned out to be a great choice. No problems with them. Wish I had known about them before I drove the van. : ) It's the lack of knowledge of the little things that can get you in trouble. : ) Anyway, nothing to be embarrassed about...it's just a different way of life. Take care, over there in Georgia. : )

Ariel I think you’re doing great the way you live and don’t need to change for anyone. I appreciate that you use a shovel and not a snowblower… Most people think all the new technology is always easier but with the easier things, commonsense is slowly being lost and people think it’s cool to go get a gym membership and exercise but they don’t realize if we’d let go of some of the easier ways/machines & such things and pick up a shovel or a broom or anything like that... we’d be exercising more than we ever do in the gym and we get things accomplished around the home or work place.

I completely agree about the snowblower not being very useful and the noise they make! Had one in Western NY = never used it, and ended up selling!!! Like you I prefer the peace and quiet of non-motorized equipment! Now that I am back down south = everybody has a leaf blower and they make even more noise than a snow blower 🙃 Thanks, Kari p.s. One of the original tiny houses, the yurt, is from Mongolia (where they call it a ‘ger’). If they can stay warm there, many off-grid like you, anyone who wants to can.

I love how concerned everyone is with your snow shoveling especially with your older age lol. Old age is not an immediate problem for you, and by the time you are in your old age you will have moved and been settled on your new property that will probably be well settled and have less snow. And as long as your health holds up and as active as you are you maybe out shoveling other people half your age!! I have delt with autoimmune issues and arthritis since I was a child. Undiagnosed for years but being monitored by Drs I continued to keep active hiking, biking, cliff climbing, camping, yard work, gardening, and my favorite push mowing 2 acres of yard sometimes twice a week. Honestly I would have probably remained healthier had I not started an office job weighing trucks and doing paper work - 2 years into that is when I became disabled :-(. That was in my late 40's, I miss living how I lived, and am so glad I did not cave in and protect myself from the wonderful things I did. The crime was sitting at a desk and standing at the scales just because the money was good. Be strong Ariel, live your life as you see fit. I wish a tiny house had been in my plans 30 yrs ago. I maybe still cleaning horse barns, and other physical jobs or still beginning long walks in a wheel chair either way it wasnt shoveling snow, mowing lawns, or shoveling saw dust and horse poo that put me here; but I would bet it delayed my sitting here!! Thanks for sharing, and keep living the best you can!!!

Great argument about not doing something because you can't do it when you're old. I hear it all the time. I guess because people are getting older and older some of us are preoccupied with aging. Let's not forget to live the here and now. But, as I said: loved the toddlers-argumentation.

People call Canada the Great White North. I live in Nova Scotia and our driveway got plowed once this year. The ground is mostly bare right now. Ariel, you have a great life and I love your work ethic! I lived similarly to you when I was in my early 20's (though not off grid, but it was in an old, rented, non insulated farm house in Maryland.) When you were sharing with us information (as you've done before) of being able to live comfortably with stored food for months without needing to go to the store, I sat here laughing! Non-sequitur: are you still carting Burley up and down the stairs, and if so, if/when he will be too heavy for the daily trip? : )

Cool video with tons of great info. Nice job. As far as your snow goes, am thinking a bit more today, Friday clearing, Sat Sun cloudy with a bit of snow followed by Mon Tues partly cloudy then the snow returns Wednesday through the weekend. Actually a pretty good forecast for the next several days. Burley is a hoot, glad you got such a good companion. Here in the Valley we have had over our measly 14 inches but only 10 miles from my house (as the eagle fly) at 10,600' they are sitting at 328" as of 6 days ago, but there have been snow showers up there since then. A really good above average snowpack which given the past couple of years is a welcome change. Hope you have a good week up coming and keep the awesome videos coming. Oh yeah according to my weather based seasons Spring begins tomorrow and it is beginning to look like that around here and I saw a Robin yesterday so we are getting close. Peace Out.

Nice. Robins are a long way out here yet. I think the very first one I spotted last year was on March 24.

Love this update and I've always loved your beautiful tiny home and I can definitely live in a smaller space. Keep up the good work.

Wonderful video and love seeing you and Burley! I live in NW Montana, rural, but not remote and not off grid. I wish there was someone who had a tractor-thrower combo like your neighbor. I haven't found anyone and so have a walk behind thrower to do my 175 yard driveway. I shovel a walk to my garage, in front of garage and some walk paths around the house and to firewood. The thrower will do those, but it is not much fun. As you noted: noise and vibration are very tiring and unpleasant. I have a large Honda walk behind with track drive and can handle ups/downs, etc. but it is a workout wrangling the darn thing. I do it for the drive and my turnaround because I like the neater look vs plowing as well as my 1 lane driveway gets narrow if it is plowed vs thrown. Bottom line, we all choose what's best for our own situation and preferences. I was pleased to hear that someone else finds a thrower tiring … sometimes I've thought I'm just, you know, old (63 :) ). Cheers to a beautiful Winter!

Having a good neighbor with a few big machines to trade things to is super handy for sure. And yeah it's not just you, I find them very tiring!

Ariel, love your videos. I started watching when I saw your gardening videos. I live in Star Valley and watched to get tips on Northern gardens. Looks like you get about twice the snow accumulation there. We have 3-4 feet depending where you look. I like shoveling too. I haven't used my snow blower in three years now. Use the truck for the driveway. I'm going to try laying hardware cloth under my beds this year- gophers!

Yeah where I'm tucked into the mountain side it is a lot deeper. Even compared to the valley up here. Best wishes with your garden this year!

Ariel, one of the advantages of you have, (other than the obvious, being young) is; living over 6,000 feet with the low moisture content of your snow. A foot of snow weighs a lot less than say, the foot we got here in Maine yesterday. Sometimes shoveling here can be like moving concrete. I envy you.

Hi Ariel, It looks like you're in it deep over there. We're getting plenty this year too, but in the mixed woods and prairie parts of the state, our snow gets blown away in the wind. There are draws that catch it that have snow 20' or 30' deep, but for the most part there's just a little pile on the East side of each sagebrush. Not really snow related, well sort of in a way, I wanted to share an idea with you to consider that you may find useful for your situation. If you look on KZbin for "Texas Prepper Greenhouse," you will see a cool little shed that he has come up with for less than a $100. Quite a bit less if you have some of the materials already. It doesn't have to be a green house, but can be modified for several other uses too. I haven't made one yet, but it just so happens that I have most of the materials on hand and will be making one into a chicken tractor soon. Heck, I got so many panels around, I may make a little green house that turns to a cucumber and bean pen when I uncover it next. I was watching your video and thinking of how you could use the same shed for multiple purposes. Our growing seasons are so short out here that if you could even extend the as little as two or three weeks in the Spring, and two or three weeks in the fall, you have almost doubled the whole season, lol. You might even get a few hardier tomatoes to survive up there, but even if not, I'm sure you get a head start on seedlings. But furthermore, I also saw another use for you for a shed like this when the garden is over and done. I could see it also being used as a small winter firewood shed, just put it closer to your house lol and the path you shovel to get to the water filler could have a woodshed along the same path. You could still shovel out longer paths wherever you want when you get bored, but wouldn't have to. Seriously though, if you haven't already seen these sheds, check out that vid, I think you'll like it. Cheers BP

I don't envy your wind! I am aware of those plans, thanks. I need to do a video about greenhouses when I get a minute...
